A will names people a census never connects: married daughters under their new surnames, grandchildren, in-laws, and the executor a family trusted. It also lists what a household actually owned, from acreage and livestock down to individual named possessions. The order in which heirs are listed can hint at who was already provided for.

These come from county probate books, so the wording is the clerk’s rather than modernized. Older documents spell names by ear and shift between versions on one page. Read a will next to the deed records for the same family, since land often moved before death rather than through the estate.
