expect to make their future home.

Fairview,are happy over the arrival of twin boys. --Mrs Rosa KENNER and

children,of Bells,were visitors in the home of her sisters,Misses Mell &

Sallie SIMS Sunday. --Harold OZIER,of Pinson,was a visitor in the home of his

aunt,Mrs.S.L.COX,and his grandfather,Dr.R.J.WILLIAMS.

UNION GROVE--J.W.STONE and family went to Humboldt Wednesday to pay last

tribute of respect to their nephew,Henry HARDEN,who died overseas about two

years ago.Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery. --Robert BELL is making his

home with his brother,Bill BELL on Rt.#9. --Mrs.Leige BLOUNT,of The Bond Tie

Co.,died last week.She leaves her husband and two step-daughters to mourn her

death.

Frances,are visiting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.O.HALL,in Vardaman,Miss.

Evergreen,Ala.,to attend the funeral of their nephew,Mr.Winston DEMMING. 

--Mr.& Mrs.Ben BLACK were hosts of a large and happy gathering of relatives

and friends at their inviting country home west of town,Monday,the occasion

being the celebration of their mother’s,Mrs.Virginia BLACK,86th birthday.

Mrs.G.M.STEELE,of Bemis,a granddaughter,gave a touching reading number.The

guest register showed 96 present.

INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Mrs.Alice DAVIS has returned from an extended

visit to Pinson.She was accompanied home by her sister,Mrs.Dora TUCKER. 

--Mr.& Mrs.J.T.WARMATH have been at Trenton this week at the bedside of their

grandson,Lloyd PARKER who is ill.

--Hon.W.R.McHANEY,wife and children,of Conway,Ark.,are visiting his parents,

Mr.& Mrs.Luther HUNT.

--John FOLTZ is ill at his home on South 14th Ave.,with typhoid fever. 

--Howard SENTER spent the weekend with his sister,Mrs.F.W.HENDERSON,at Crockett Mills. 

--Paul CRADDOCK left Thursday for Berkley,Ky.,where he has begun operating his canning plant.

DEATH--Marion,the 4-months-old son of Mr.& Mrs.Sam W.FERRELL,of Bells,died

Sunday and the remains were brought to Humboldt and buried in Rose Hill

Cemetery.Rev.WEAVER conducted the services at the graveside.

DEATH-ATWOOD,TENN.,AUGUST 6th--Elizabeth,2-years-old daughter of Mr.&

Mrs.H.P.MULLINS,died yesterday morning of dysentery.Services conducted by

Rev,UNDERWOOD at M.E.Church South.Interment in Pisgah Cemetery.Many friends

and relatives in Humboldt sympathize with them.

ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Leamon GRAY and sister,Mrs.Cecil WYATT,of

Eloise,are guests of their sister,Mrs.Charles SIMMONS. --May & Agnes CRAIG,of

Humboldt,are visitors here with their sister,Mrs.Arthur WILLIAMS. 

--`Tis very seldom we see a family of six brothers and sisters who have all

passed their three score and 10 years,but this good fortune has been accorded

to the PATTERSON family of this community.They are: Berry,Bob,Zan,and Kinch

PATTERSON,Mrs.Peggy THOMAS and Miss Sack PATTERSON.The ages range from 72 to

90 years,Mrs.THOMAS being the eldest. 

--Mr.& Mrs.Garland HOPPER have the sincere sympathy of their many friends in

the loss by death of their darling baby girl,Hauty Pearl,who was a little more

than a year old. 

--Sunday,August 8th,was a memorable day with Mr.& Mrs.J.M.WARREN.This was

Mrs.WARREN’s 75th birthday.Their nine children:Mr.& Mrs.Tom WARREN,of

Jackson,Dr.& Mrs.J.Willis WARREN,of Forked Deer, Mr.& Mrs.J.D.MASON,of

Jackson,Mr.& Mrs.Robert WARREN,Mr.& Mrs.Walter WARREN,Mrs.R.L.CRADDOCK,Mr.&

Mrs.J.Robert TODD,Mr.& Mrs.Hiram REEVES and Mr.& Mrs.Ernest WILLIAMS;about 30

grandchildren,and several great grandchildren were present.

SOCIETY--A dinner was given Sunday at the home of T.E.GRAVES in honor of

Mrs.S.F.FORSYTHE’s 76th birthday. 

--The marriage of Miss Carrie ALBRIGHT to Mr.D.E.BARNETT was solemnized this

morning at 8 o’clock. Mr.S.N.PARHAM and Miss Evie JACKSON were quietly married

at the home of Rev.E.L.ORR Saturday evening at 8 o’clock. 

--Mrs.C.A.DUNGAN will leave Sunday for Memphis,where she will spend a few days

with her daughter,Miss Lucille BRADFORD,before going to Covina,Calif.to visit

Mr.Robert SPEARS and family.She will return by way of Sioux City,Iowa,to

visither son,Shelton BRADFORD. 

--Mr.& Mrs.T.N.NELSON,Mrs.Nannie COOPER and Mrs.Harris NELSON left Thursday

morning on a trip to Rosedale,Miss.,to visit Mr.& Mrs.NELSON’s daughter, Mrs.A.V.GAISER.

Bells,attended the funeral of little Marion FERRELL Monday.

--Nannie,the 9-year-old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Claude SCOTT,died Tuesday 

after a short illness of peritinitis.Burial in Milan Cemetery. 

CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mrs.A.DRINKARD,of Gadsden,spent 

part of last week with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Frank YEARWOOD. 

--Mrs.Jim MIDYETT and daughter,Miss Altie Mai,spent last week here with 

relatives. 

--Little Josephine & Garland PATRICK,of Huntingdon,are here with their 

grandparents,Mr.& Mrs.F.S.PATRICK,while their father is at Dawson 

Springs for his health.These two little children lost their mother by death two months ago.

--Mr.& Mrs.J.W.PORTER are rejoicing over the arrival of a baby boy on 

the 4th. 

--Mrs.J.B.EMISON and two children and Mr.Jesse MARGRAVES motored to 

Cross Roads Friday afternoon and visited Mr.& Mrs.Ersely TAYLOR in the home of 

his brother,Prince TAYLOR.

SOLDIER’S LAST LETTER TO HIS MOTHER--Below is published Private Joe 

H.HARDIN’s last letter to his mother before leaving camp for 

France,where he died October 18th,1918.

“Hello Mamma; how are you?Fine I hope.I am well and hope you are 

mamma.You know I would love to see you and all the rest,but I can’t 

now.But,listen,I will see you someday. If I have to go to France,don’t you worry,

for the Lord is with me and I will never fear,and mamma,”Uncle Sam”needs me here.

So just cheer up and remember that the Lord will be with me,and the war will come

to an end some day.So bye bye;and write.From your son,Joe H.HARDEN.”

Jackson and spent Sunday with Humboldt friends. 

--Dr.STEVENS & son,of Dresdan,spent Monday with his daughter,Mrs.Douglas 

SILER. 

--Mr.B.HIMELHOCH,who left several weeks ago for a visit to his old home 

in Russia, has landed in Amsterdam, Holland. From there he will go through Sweden

to Kurkland,Russia. 

--Mr.L.P.KIMBROUGH has received a letter from his 

mother,Mrs.J.E.LOWDERMILK,of Memphis,saying that she and Mr.LOWDERMILK 

are leaving for an extended trip through the west. 

--Sam SANFORD,aged 58 years,dropped dead suddenly at his home two miles 

west of Milan.He was a farmer,is survived by a wife; one son;and two 

daughters;one brother,E.M.SANFORD,of Milan.Services were held and burial followed

in Martin Cemetery near Oakwood.

with her brother,Shaw SMITH at Memphis. 

--Mrs.Will PERCELL and son,David left last week to visit her

--Mrs.M.G.HARRIS,who has been on an extended visit to her son,Lyman 

HARRIS in Tiptonville,has returned and is with her daughter,Mrs.J.N.JACKSON. 

--Ben Allen WILLIAMS,who makes his home in Texas,is visiting his aged 

father,Mr.Wilson WILLIAMS,who is in rapidly declining health,being now 

past 90 years of age. 

--Mrs.Jennie TUDOR & Mrs.W.W.RICHARDSON were in Brownsville last Wednesday,visiting

Mrs.RICHARDSON’s daughter,Mrs.Will HEGLER. 

SOCIETY--Mrs.T.A.NOONER arrived here Monday evening for a visit of a few 

days to the family of her father,Mr.T.Q.WARMATH.Recently Dr.NOONER and his 

brother bought a drug store at Grenada,Miss.,and he and Mrs.NOONER are making 

their home in that city now. 

--Mrs.William HASSE and daughter,Hilda,who have been guests of 

Mrs.Hasse’s brother,Mr.J.J.SYNDER,returned Sunday to their home in Cleveland,Ohio.

Newbern,attended the funeral of Mrs.Elizabeth HAMILTON Monday.

INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Last week,the marriage of Ernest 

HAZELWOOD and Miss Allie RAINS took place at the bride’s home in 

Crockett County. 

--Mr.Ray REED,of Louisianna,is visiting his parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.F.MILES. 

--Death again visited our community Monday night,when the spirit of Armstead

GOODWIN,8 years old,took flight to the unknown world.He was the son of Mr.&

Mrs.Elbert GOODWIN and had been sick with inflammatory rheumatism.Burial in

White Rose Cemetery. 

--Lawson and R.D.ESTES,Jr.,visited their uncle,W.A.LOVE,in 

Sarah,Miss.,this week. 

DEATH--Mrs.Elizabeth Jane HAMILTON,mother of Messers W.R.& Dave HAMILTON 

and Mesdames C.M.WILLIAMS & Luther MATHIAS,died at the home of the elder 

son,W.R.,at an early hour Sunday morning,August 15th,of pneumonia.She was 77

years of age,burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. 

DEATH--Last Saturday morning,Mrs.Mary Jane SALISBURY,known to her friends as

“Sunshine”,laid down her burdens and fell into that deamless sleep that comes

before the joys of eternity.Realizing for several years past that she was in

the twilight of her earthly existence,Mrs.SALISBURY had pleasantly whiled away

many otherwise tedious hours,fashioning her burial clothes and burial

outfit,and after the great summons had come and the tired worn body was

stilled,ministering friends found every little single item ready at hand for

the last sad offices of love.She was born at High Hill,MO.,in 1840,and at the

age of 16,was married at Danville,Mo.,to Hon.Lord William SALISBURY,an English

lawyer,and nephew and namesake of Lord SALISBURY of London.At the age of 

twenty,she was left a widow with two little daughters.Two years after the

death of the father,these little girls died about the same time and both were

buried in the same caskett.One by one,her other loved ones were called

away,until her death,only four nephews and four neices survive her.Two of

these nephews,Messrs.Chas.J.CUSTER,of this city,and W.V.CUSTER,of

Bainbridge,GA,were the mainstays and support of Mrs.SALISBURY.Burial in Rose

Hill Cemetery. 

DAVIDSON CHAPEL--Curtis JACKSON has been ten days trying to decide which to

buy for that new boy,a Ford car or a team of mules. 

ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM GADSDEN--Misses Geneva,Ida,and Novella KEE and 

little brother,Granville,of Humboldt,were visitors in the home of their 

grandfather,Mr.John KEE. 

--Mrs.Lou Evans SMITH,sister of Prof.J.R.McDONALD,died in Gleason a few 

days since. 

NEWS ITEMS FROM EDISON--Miss Virginia BLEDSOE,of the Follis Chapel 

community,spent part of last week at the home of her uncle,R.F.BROGDEN. 

--Miss Mary ALEXANDER and brother,Earl,of Savannah,Tenn.,are the guests 

of their grandparents,Mr.& Mrs.D.S.FALLS. 

--Mrs.Sam JOHNSON and children,of Huntingdon,returned to their home 

after a visit with her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Sam MITCHELL. 

--Mr.& Mrs.Lloyd ALEXANDER,of Savannah,tenn.,recently made a visit to 

her parents,Mr.& Mrs.D.S.FALLS. 

--Mr.A.W.FREEMAN died Friday after several weeks illness.Funeral 

services were conducted at Old Gibson Church, interment there. 

WEEK’s DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE--The funeral service of D.W.NEVIL was 

conducted Sunday afternoon at Hopewell by Rev.MOBLEY.The service was 

conducted at the grave with Masonic rites.  He was 71 years.  One 

daughter,Mrs.C.J.WALKER,of this city survives.

-DEATH--The many friends in Alamo and here of Mr.W.H.BIGGS were shocked

to hear of his death in his home in Jackson.He was 70 years of age.He leaves his

wife,daughter and three sons.

 of town,and Mrs.Janie GRAVES were united in marriage at the bride’s home

Sunday morning.

an absence of twenty years,visited in the home of Mr.J.W.EMISON last week.

--After an absence of over 30 years,Mrs.Bessie Read PATTERSON,mother of Dr.Marion READ, is his guest this week.

--Old Uncle Anthony SHAW,a worthy colored man,who held the respect of

both white and black here,breathed his last on Friday,after being sick a long time.

father was seriously ill.He and his daughter,Mrs.Maggie BUCKINGHAM have gone to be with him during his illness.

Jackson,spent Monday in Humboldt with his brother,W.T.HOWSE and friends.

-BELLS,TENN.,SEPT. 7th--A most deplorable accident happened Monday

morning,while Mr.John EVANS and son,Bernard,were moving an electric pole

a few feet to another hole out of the way of the highway.The wire broke and struck

Bernard on the foot,running up his side.All the skin was burned off one hand,and it is

reported he is in very serious condition.His father,John EVANS & Guy EDWARDS went to his

assistance and were badly shocked for a few moments.

-IN MEMORY--The Death Angel came August 20th,1920 and claimed for its

victim,Mr.A.W.FREEMAN,husband,father,Christian,brother and friend,of Edison.

-SOCIETY--Lillian BRANDENBURG,after a four weeks’ illness of typhoid

fever in the home of her aunt,Mrs.S.C.BENNETT,of Little Rock,Ark.,is now able to be up and will return home Friday.

--Mrs.Jas.W.HOWSE,of Somerville,spent Sunday and Monday here,the guest

of her brother,Mr.D.C.HOWSE and family.

--Mrs.Roland DUNLAP,of New Wilson,Okla.,was here Friday,the guest of her nephew,Mr.W.R.CRADOCK and family.

-INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON--Mrs.Nancy TUCKER,age 77 years,wife of

Sam TUCKER,died at her home near Eldad last Friday,after a short illness

of flux.She leaves her husband,four sons and one daughter.The body was taken to Oak

Grove,where the funeral service was held,after which she was laid to rest.

--William YOUNG,68 years,died suddenly while sitting at the supper table

Monday evening.He had been in good health,had just returned from town,when the

end came.The body was carried to Oakwood Cemetery for burial Wednesday afternoon.

--John SMITH,about 70 years of age,died Friday at the home of Claud

GATHING.He leaves a sister,Miss Parlee SMITH,and one brother,Henry SMITH.

--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.Al PACE,a fine girl.

--BORN to Mr.& Mrs.W.F.PILLOW,a fine girl.

--Mrs.Neal McMILLIN returned Sunday from a two weeks’visit with her 

daughter,Mrs.Jim MIDYETT,at Bells. 

--A very large crowd from here attended the funeral of Mr.Frank 

ROBERTSON,at Crockett Mills Saturday. 

--Mrs.Annie WOOLEY and son,after a two weeks’stay with her mother,Mrs.Tom

WARREN,returned to her home in Memphis,accompanied by her sister,Miss Mona

WARREN. 

--One of the nicest affairs of the season occurred Sunday

afternoon in the home of Mr.& Mrs.James PERRY,on Bells Street,it

being the occasion of their 50th marriage anniversary.All of their

eight children and grandchildren were present,an aisle was formed

in the large reception hall,the children on one side,grandchildren

on the other.Mr.& Mrs.PERRY walked down this aisle,taking their

places at the head,and the marriage ceremony was said for them

again by their pastor,Bro.NIX.

girl,their first born. 

--J.B.WALLIS has returned from Imboden,Ark.,and reports his father somewhat

improved.He was called there last week,because of the seriousness of his

D.HENDERSON,of New York,have been visiting their parents, Mr.& Mrs. E.M. HENDERSON. 

--Mr.D.G.STEWART,who has been confined to his room for the past four 

months,left Tuesday for a Memphis Hospital. 

--The many friends in Humboldt regret to hear of the death of 

Mrs.Yandell HAUN in Memphis Thursday.Mrs.HAUN will be remembered as Miss Eva 

CARROLL,daughter of Dr.J.R.CARROLL,who resided in Humboldt for several years. 

--News was received this week by Mrs.Joseph MATHIS announcing the

death of Mr.Joseph Howard HERRON,formerly of this place,at

Healdsburg,Calif.,where he had made his home for the past few

years.he was a nephew of the late Joe W.MATHIS,and made his home

with him during his school days.He leaves a wife,two brothers and

three sisters. 

-DEATH--Dr.Homer ANDREWS’sudden death at Medina Friday night

brought great sorrow to his many friends through out the county.He

was 35 years old,survived by his wife; father,Dr.D.T.ANDREWS and

his mother.Burial in Zion Cemetery. 

-DEATH--Mrs.Sarah Ellen LOVE,wife of Fred M.LOVE,age 26 years,died

Friday,August 10th,at the home of her parents in Paris,Tenn.,and

was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.She is survived by her husband; a

10-months-old son; her parents,Mr.& Mrs.Wm.D.WINCHESTER; two

sisters,Rava & Orien WINCHESTER,both of Paris.

have passed away and were buried the same day at Pond Creek,this

county,they being “Uncle” Haywood REECE,aged 89 years and Sidney

SORRELL,aged 77 years.Esq.Joe PRIVETT,of Crockett Mills,conducted

the services.Mr.SORRELL was the father of Mrs.S.J.JONES,wife of

the proprietor of the Jones Hotel,this city. 

-MEMPHIS,TENN.,SEPT. 10th--Mrs.Belle Bright ELDER died at the home

of her daughter,Mrs.J.C.CAWTHON,yesterday morning.The body will be

forwarded to Trenton,Tenn.,her old home,for interment.She was a

daughter of the late Dr.Johnston BRIGHT,Presbyterian pastor; and

the widow of Charles A.ELDER.She is also survived by two other

daughters; one son,Eaton ELDER;and two sisters. 

-UNION GROVE--Mrs.Minerva BABB,of near Alamo,spent Monday in the

home of her neice,Mrs.E.H.CATES. 

--Mrs.John ROSAMON,of near Gadsden,was called to the bedside of her son,Bob

ROSAMON Friday,He is critically ill. 

-SOCIETY--A wedding occurred Thursday at 6 p.m. at the home of the

bride’s parents,when Miss Annie Lou SAINE,daughter of Mr.&

Mrs.W.H.SAINE,became the bride of Phillip D.JURASCHEK,of

Brooklyn,N.Y. They will make their home in New York. 

--Mrs.Robert M.SHORT,of Sardis,Miss.,announces the approaching marriage of her

daughter,Edwina,to Dr.Frank H.HAGMANN,the wedding to occur in December.

-DEATH;MILAN,TENN.,SEPT.22--C.B.HARVEY,72 years,farmer,dropped dead from 

heart failure at his home east of here.He was digging a trench to place a

sorghum mill and quit work at 11 o’clock to go to dinner,started to the house

and fell dead.He is survived by his wife,two sons and three daughters.

Interment was in Hopewell Cemetery. 

-CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO--Mr.Carmel SMYTHE,of Kankakee,Ill.,visited

his grandmother,Mrs.W.P.HALL last week. 

--Mesdames Tommie HUDSON and Mary SUTTON,of Humboldt,visited their

nephew,James ROE,who is quite ill,last Friday. 

--Mrs.Coley EMISON,of Bells,spent the week-end here with her mother,who is

quite feeble,being confined to her bed most of the time. 

--Mr.Abner ROBERTSON returned Sunday from Grand Junction,where he had been

making arrangements for moving his family.He will have charge of the oil

business at that place. 

--Quite a bad as well as sad accident occurred near the M.E.Church last

Saturday night after services,in which Mr.Frank LASSITER and son were both

seriously injured.The flesh was torn to the bone of the younger man’s limb and

his father,Mr.LASSITER had one of his lower limbs broken in three places,they

were taken to a Dyersburg hospital.It is feared the senior LASSITER’s leg will

have to be amputated,on account of his age,71 years,grave fears are

entertained.A young man of Halls,(unnamed) driving a car fast,lost

control,crashing into a buggy,tearing off the hind wheels,then into two cars. 

-ACCUSED OF THEFT--Government agents have returned and put under bond Wilburn

K.DOWLIN,of El Paso,Texas,a former resident of Milan,charging him with the

theft of a package of currency amounting to $8,500 from a mail pouch in

transit from Los Angeles,Calif.,to New York City in March of this year.The

inspectors make a claim that DOWLIN was a member of the crew that handled the

rotary lock pouch on March 4th,and that he had in his possession a forged key

when arrested. 

-BADLEY BURNED.TIPTONVILLE,TENN.Sept.17--R.W.PURYEAR,a white man,who recently

came here to do road work for the county,was badly burned this evening when a

gallon bucket of gasoline he was holding in his hand caught fire.It is

reported that Mr.PURYEAR and Albert NAIL,another road worker were filling the

tank on the truck when John AUTRY,a road commissioner drove up in a Ford

car,and after talking to the men for a few minutes,got out to crank the car.It

is said that the car was started with the cut off open,which caused the fire.

--Mrs.T.P.JONES has returned from a visit to her brother,Dr.J.T.RAINES,at

Malesus,who is critically ill,and little hope of recovery is entertained.

storehouse on 22nd Avenue into a residence,which will be occupied by Mr.Lem

BOLING and family. 

--Mr.Marshall STALLINGS,who has been with the L.& N.freight office here for

sometime,has resigned his position and left Sunday for New Orleans,where he

has accepted a more lucretive place. 

--Ab BOWLIN,wanted for housebreaking in Carroll County,was arrested in

Humboldt yeaterday and brought to Milan last night by Deputy Sheriff

J.D.BELEW,and locked up.He was taken to Huntingdon this morning.His family

lives in Milan. 

--J.E.PEAL,of Johnson City,Illinois was here Monday en route home,after a

pleasant viit to the families of W.B.WHAREY & Dr.M.D.INGRAM,of Eaton.Mr.PEAL

was accompanied by his daughters,Mrs.C.C.JONES and Miss Tessie PEAL.He is the

father of Gus PEAL,a prominent farmer of near Humboldt.

--Prof.Preston HESS has returned to his duties at U.of T. Knoxville

Monday,after a visit of several days with his parents,Prof.& Mrs.W.S.HESS. 

-IN MEMORY--Mrs.Martha Hanna Elizabeth SCOTT was born June 27,1869,and fell

asleep in Jesus September 15,1920,making her stay here on earth 51 years, 2

months, and 18 days.She proffessed faith in Christ when but 13 years and

united with the Methodist Church,and lived a consistant member until November

1903,when she became dissatisfied with this denomination and joined the

Missionary Baptist Church,of this place.She had lived a widow some 18

years,being left alone to rear her four children,three of whom were small.She

had been in ill health for the past nine years,and suffered untold agonies.She

is survived by three daughters; one son; two sisters;three brothers;eight

grandchildren.Four children and two grandchildren preceded her to the grave. 

-SOCIETY--Mrs.Williard Harding BURROUGHS announces the approaching marriage of

her daughter,Elizabeth A.,to Joseph Russell McGEHEE,at high noon on Saturday

in Memphis.

Lexington,visited their sister and cousin,Mrs.J.G.BURKS,this week.

neice,Mrs.Yandell HAUN,who was buried in Memphis Saturday. 

--Miss Lucille YANDELL returned to Memphis,after a week’s visit to her
