KNOXVILLE,TENN.JAN.10--JANE KATHERINE ASTLEY,three-year-old daughter of

WILLIAM ASTLEY of Yale,Mich., was burned to death here Monday when her dress

caught fire from an open grate. The ASTLEYS were visiting the child's

grandparents, MR.& MRS.A.L.TROTTER.

FRIAR POINT,MISS.JAN.10--Relatives and friends of four members of a hunting

party missing since early Sunday had boats patroling the Mississippi river in

a search to-day.The missing men are: JOHN T.CHISM, J.T.CASEY, "FRECK" PUCK---

?.and C.W.McCRAW.

CLARKSDALE,MISS.JAN.10--Fight for the custody of the two McCRACKEN

children, HILDA, 9,and MARGUERITE,13,daughters of DR.W.H.McCRACKEN, who several

weeks ago slew a clerk,was settled today. Attorneys for the physician and

MRS.McCRACKEN reached an agreement,and Chancellor HARVEY McGEHEE handed down a

decision that sent the two children to the home of MRS.TOM CARTLEDGE,of

Clarksdale,until the school term ends.  ED BREWER was counsel for the physician

while ED SMITH acted for Mrs.McCRACKEN.

ST.LOUIS,MO.JAN.10--MRS.ELSIE HIGDON felt that life held little for her as she

was in poor health and her five cats,which kept her company while her husband

was at work,were growing old.When her husband returned home he found

MRS.HIGDON'S body on the kitchen floor,and all the gas jets on.She clasped

three dead cats to her bosom."I'm tired,Please bury my cats with me," was the

woman's final message,scrawled on a sheet of paper in the kitchen.

JILTED LOVER ADMITS HE KILLED GIRL--"I'll tell you the truth if you'll send me

to the electric chair." With these words,MARSHALL SPIGENER,28,confessed at

6:40 a.m.Monday to the murder of MRS.GRACE BENNETT,28,Friday night at her

home,194 S.Somerville St. He told CAPT.GLISSON how he fired a shotgun into

MRS.BENNETT's breast though jealously.Very lenthly.Nothing new.

CONDITION OF DRINK STAND BANDIT BETTER--There was a slight improvement in the

condition of C.E.WILLIAMS,25,bandit,following a blood transfusion

Sunday.WILLIAMS was shot in an attempted hold-up on a soft drink stand

December 29.PHIL CLARK HADDEN,25,an accompliance was captured.The shot which

brought down WILLIAMS was fired by former Police Sergeant W.H.CROOM.It tore a

jagged hole through his left side,and left him paralyzed.

ROBERT MARSHALL--filed suit in circuit court Monday evening against the Bass

Garage,Inc.,alleging $7,500 personal injuries when he was run down November

11,when he was riding a bicycle down the gutter past the entrance of the

garage by a car driven recklessly out of the garage.

PROBE SHOOTING OF AGED MAN--SHERIFF KNIGHT Monday was investigating

circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting of MIKE BERNARDO,SR.,70,on his

farm early this morning on Macon Road,a mile west of Cordova.According to

MRS.KATE BERNARDO,his wife,her aged husband was alone in the house.She says

that at 5 a.m. he entered her room to make a fire.Two hours later,she said she

entered his room to awaken him and found him dead on the floor with a bullet

wound in his head and a pistol by his side.She said she did not hear the

shot.DR.S.E.PARROT was summoned by MRS.BERNARDO.DR.PARROT said the aged man

had been ill for several days,but Sunday night in the presence of friends had

made plans for the weeks' work on the farm.The BERNARDOS have two sons in

Memphis,Mike,Jr.,and Robert Leorardo BERNARDO.The body was taken to Thompson

Bros.Undertakers.

MEMPHIS PHYSICIANS--Monday were making a desperate fight to bring back to

consciousness MISS MARGARET GILLESPIE,18,903 Philsdelphia Ave.The girl was

found lying unconsciour in the bathroom of her home January 3rd,and has been

in a state of coma since.Physicians for sometime were unable to diagnose her

case.X-rays showed no injury to her skull,and the only apparent sympton of

trouble was a small blood clot in the mastoid cavity.A puncture of her spine

revealed traces of blood,however,and it has been determined that she is

suffering from spinal meningitis.

JACK BECKHAM--1 year,son of W.A. & RUTH BROWN BECKHAM,died at Methodist

Hospital Sunday morning.Surviving are his parents; two brothers,FRANK & BILLY

BECKHAM; four sisters,ELAINE, ALLINE, DOROTHY, & MARY BECKHAM; and

grandfather,BENJAMIN BECKHAM.Funeral services were conducted by Rev.GRADY

SPIEGAL at the BECKHAM home.Burial in Forest Hill cemetery.

G.CONDE CORLEY,26,& I.C.McELHANEY,24--were arrested Saturday night for the

hold-up of the Pidgeon-Thomas Iron Co.payroll of $1449.96 New Year's day,were

arraigned in city court Monday.

FRANK O.DAVIS--32,Claridge guest,was arrested Monday on a warrant from Baton

Rouge,La.,charging forgery.Inspector WILL GRIFFIN and Sergt.LOUIS CROSBY

arrested him at the hotel.He was docketed as a fugitive from justice and

returned to Baton Rouge.

WAR BUDDY--His buddy,who fought with him in France,will be the beneficiary of

the government bonus insurance policy of TONY FLAN,who was buried Saturday

after a long illness in the U.S.Veterans Hospital here.According to GEORGE

HAUGHTON, secretary of the local American Legion,W.H.CAUGHTON,Miston,Tenn.,was

notified Monday that he would receive $1500 from FLAN's policy.CAUGHTON and

FLAN fought together in major battles,including St.Mihiel and the Argonne

forest.HAUGHTON also fought with FLAN in France.

ONE DEAD WHEN TENNESSEE FUED BURSTS SUNDAY.GREENVILLE,TENN.JAN.10--CICERO

STARNES,53,is dead with six bullet wounds in his body; BLAINE SMITH,37,is in a

local hospital with one side of his face torn to pieces from blows with a claw

hammer; OTTO STARNES,brother of CICERO is in jail; and MARY SMITH,18,daughter

of BLAIN is suffering from knife wounds as a result of last night's

culmination of a two year feud between the families.Both families live north

of Greenville.The SMITHS were returning from church and CICERO asked STARNES

with a curse,"are you ready to leave this world?" He attacked SMITH with a

hammer,striking him in the face.OTTO joining in with a knife,but MARY SMITH

coming to her father's aid fought him off.SMITH shot CICERO STARNES six

times.MARY is held as a material witness while her father is charged with

murder.

PREPARED FOR DEATH.EATONTOWN,N.J.--WILLIAM REID,85, Civil War Veteran,was to

be buried today in a coffin of his own making in a grave he dug and bricked.

"I don't want relatives and friends to be put to any trouble," he said at the

time he prepared for his own funeral.

FREEMAN ARMSTRONG--negro,arrested by deputies on information from Indiana

Harbor,Ind., police,confessed Monday to SHERIFF KNIGHT the murder of his

wife,LUCILLE,and his mother-in-law,MRS.SAMUELLA McCOMB.According to his

confession,on November 1st he killed the two women with a shotgun at Indiana

Harbor.He fled to Memphis he said and has been hiding here every since.He was

arrested Sunday night by Deputies WILLIS and SURRENCY in an apartment at Apple

& Plum Streets.

FOUR WHITE BOYS--still were at large Monday after holding up

A.J.GOLDMAN,street car motorman,robbing him of $55,warning a passenger,WALLACE

TURNER,to keep quiet,they escaped in a coupe with two other youths under fire

from GOLDMAN.

WASHINGTON,JAN.10--C.G.GATE,Tennessee physician today was denied a supreme

court review of his conviction and two years prison sentence for violation of

the Harrison anti-narcotic act.His appeal charged the constitutionality of the

law's limitation of the amount of drugs that can be prescribed.He had given

large amounts to persons with incurable diseases.

MRS.O.L.JOHNSON--22,was recovering Monday in St.Joseph's hospital from

infuries received in an auto accident Sunday morning.MRS.JOHNSON was struck by

J.T.GARDNER'S car as she attempted to cross the street near her home,669

Poplar.GARDNER was charged with reckless driving.He stopped his car and

offered his assistance.

MISS VIRGINIA WENKER--27,died Sunday morning at the home of her

sister,MRS.BENJAMIN ABRAHAM after a two weeks illness.She was here on a visit

from her home in Scranton,Pa. Surviving her are her sister,MRS.ABRAHAM; and

her parents,MR.& MRS.A.WENKER of Scranton.Burial was in Baron Hirsch Cemetery.

CHARLES EDMONDS McCRAREY--died at St.Joseph's hospital Sunday.Surviving him

are his parents,CAPT.WILLIAM and MARIE MULLER McCRAREY; two brothers,WILLIAM

E.McCRAREY JR.,and HENRY ALBERT McCRAREY.Funeral services conducted by

REV.DR.MAXINE at the McCRAREY home Monday,burial in Forest Hill Cemetery.

FUNERAL SERVICES--for MARTIN HERMAN METTE,80,who died Saturday morning were

held at St.Mary's Catholic Church Monday.Burial in Calvary

Cemetery.Pallbearers were CHARLES GERBER, JOHN D.GERBER, GEORGE H.HERBERS,

CUMMINS METTE, WALTER RICHARDS, P.A.McPHILLIPS, FRANK HERBERS, F.H.VOEGELI and

WILLIAM MORIARITY. Survivirs are his widow,MRS.EMMA HEIN METTE; one

sister,MISS ELIZABETH METTE; and three brothers,FRANK METTE, JOSEPH METTE, and

EDWARD METTE.

MRS.J.W.VINSANT--died late Saturday at her home in Jacksboro,Tenn.,according

to a message received from DR.R.S.VINSANT,dean of the University of Tennessee

Dental School,her son,who was called to his mother's home about a week

ago.MRS.VINSANT is survived by 11 children and her husband;and relations in

five generations.Funeral services were held at the home in Jacksboro Tuesday.

MRS.MYNETA CAREY--36,died at the Baptist Hospital Sunday morning after an

attack of indestion Friday.Surviving are her husband,J.C.CAREY,yardmaster for

the I.C.R.R.; a daughter,VIRGINIA CAREY; her father,J.I.CAREY of

Augusta,Kan.;one sister,MRS.GERTRUDE MTERS,of Memphis; and two

brothers,D.E.CAREY of Memphis and T.B.CAREY of Sapulpa,Okla.Burial in Forest

Cemetery.Pallbearers: LINDSEY PHILLIPS, L.B.MEYERS, RICHARD NETHERCOTT, COLEY

WRAY, CLARENCE CASE and C.S.HOLLOMAN.

MRS.IRENE INGE COLLIER--74,of 1179 Tutwiler ave.,died at her home Saturday.She

is survived by her daughters,MRS.MAI SUE BOOTH and MRS.IRENE NIX, and a

grandson,J.J.NIX.Burial in Corinth,Miss.

WILLIAM THOMAS WILSON--died in Memphis Sunday.He is survived by his widow,MARY

CALLAGER WILSON; his three sons,JAMES WILSON, W.N.WILSON and LILER WILSON,all

of Memphis and two daughters,MRS.S.J.KEY of Memphis and MRS.MANDY SCOTT of

Kennett,Mo. Burial in Moscow,Tenn.

MRS.LILLIE MARGARET GRACE--33,and her infant son,died at the GRACE home,1028

Holmes Av.Sunday morning.Surviving MRS.GRACE is her husband,E.B.GRACE; and two

sons,DONALD GRACE and TOM GRACE.Funeral will be from the home Tuesday,with

services at the Blessed Sacrament church.Burial in Calvary Cemetery.

HIT AND RUN DRIVER SOUGHT--Deputy sheriffs Monday were searching for ARTHUR

MORRIS,negro,who escaped Sunday night after his auto collided with that of

J.M.GURLEY,1017 Looney ave on Poplar Pike.Neither driver was hurt,but the cars

were badly damaged.

HERE AND THERE IN MEMPHIS--MISS KATHERINE RICE is in Oklahoma City where she

went to attend the funeral of her father,E.M.RICE.She will not return for

several weeks. MISS FLORENCE BOYCE has returned to Washington to continute

her studies at the National Park Seminary where she will graduate in June.She

is the daughter of MR.& MRS.C.R.BOYCE. MRS.FRANK GILVIN of Amarillo,Tx.,is

the guest of MRS.J.I.ROEMER and her daughter,MRS.E.C.STINSON.

MR.& MRS.J.E.STANSELL-- announce the marriage of their daughter,MISS EVA LEE

STANSELL to JACK F.WEEKS.

WINSTON-SALEM,N.C.JAN.10--ALBERT JACKSON,fry cook at a local hotel,caused many

early risers to telephone the police headquarters that a crazy negro was

walking the snow covered streets barefooted.After scouring the city for

several hours for the "crazy negro," they learned that Jackson works at the

hotel.They found him flipping hot cakes in a happy mood. "I always takes my

shoes off and walks in the first snow," JACKSON explained. "It keeps me from

having colds for the rest of the winter."

GREENWOOD,MISS.JAN.10--MRS.T.M.WHETSTONE is recovering from burns about the

face and hands suffered Saturday in a fire which swept the upper story of her

residence on South Blvd.here.The upper story of the house was

wrecked.MRS.WHETSTONE was burned as she stepped upon the front porch in an

attempt to enter the burning house.

TYRONZA,ARK.JAN.10--OLEN "JACK" WARREN,son of W.D.WARREN,was run down Saturday

by R.J.RACELY,of Jonesboro,who was returning from Memphis.RACELY carried JACK

to the Royal Drug Store,where DR.L.H.McDANIEL treated him for a severe scalp

wound on the left side of his head.

TYRONZA,ARK.JAN.10--MRS.ELLA BLIVENS died Friday of pneumonia,leaving six

children,the youngest is only three days old.She was the daughter of MR.&

MRS.LEIGE WORLEY of Savannah,Tenn.,and had three sisters and one brother.The

body was taken to Nixon,Tenn. for burial.

GREENWOOD,MISS.JAN.10--F.GOODMAN,merchant,died at his home here after a long

illness.Funeral services were Sunday,interment following in the Jewish

Cemetery.He had been a resident of Greenwood 20 years.He is survived by his

widow; and two children, MISS ADELE GOODMAN and FERINAND GOODMAN Jr.

LAST RITES HELD FOR SUICIDE VICTIM--The body of J>G.COLLINS,49,traveling man

and merchant of Mattson,Miss.,who committed suicide Saturday at Methodist

Hospital,Memphis was taken in a Thompson Bros.funeral coach to

Brownsville,Tenn. Sunday.Burial was in the Brownsville Cemetery.COLLINS

slashed his throat with the blade of a safety razor after asking the nurse to

get a barber to shave him.

J.L.HEMP--32,of St.Louis,was recovering Monday at St.Joseph Hospital from a

wound received Sunday,while on a duck hunt.HEMP,sitting in his boat was

injured when a shotgun lying in his boat accidently discharged.The accident

happened in Rosedale,Miss.He'll live.

V.O.CRONK AND J.H.TICER--were recovering Monday from injuries received Sunday

night when their autos collided on N.Second.TICER's car was demolished.Both

motorist blamed glaring headlights for the accident.

PEDESTRIAN STABBED BY NEGRO IN FIGHT--Stabbed by a negro with whom he

quarreled, E.C.NORTON, 25, 874 Louisiana St. was recovering at Baptist hospital

Monday.NORTON received the injury Saturday night while on his way home.He

states he brushed against a negro.The negro turned on him,after a few

words,pulled a knife.He is not seriously injured.NORTON is an employee of the

Frisco.

HUNGER CAUSED BENJAMIN FRANKLIN'S DEATH--FRANKLIN was shot to death Sunday at

12:20 a.m.by GEORGE MALONE,negro soft drink stand owner at 512 N.Third

St.MALONE told police he shot FRANKLIN because he came to the stand,seeing he

had closed for the night,tried to break in to get something to eat after

MALONE refused to open the door.MALONE is in jail pending investigation.

LONNIE ALEXANDER--negro,of Holly Springs,Miss.,was in serious condition Monday

as a result of being run down Sunday afternoon by ELLIS BYRD at Florida St and

Dempster Av. He is in General Hospital. BYRD said ALEXANDER stepped in front

of his car and he was unable to stop in time.

DAUGHTER IS DYING--Thirty minutes after she had telephoned members of her

church circle to be sure and attend Tuesday's meeting "at her home,"

MRS. M.E. RICHARDSON, 201 Merton Ave.,received a telegram notifying her that her

daughter is dying in Chicago. The daughter is MRS.FRANK BECKER, formerly MISS

ANNIE RICHARDSON. She has been married 10 years,and has three children. The

telegram gave no details.
