MUST STAND TRIAL, ON A STRETCHER IF NECESSARY--OTTO LUCCHESSI must come to court and

stand trial on charges of assault to murder and carrying a pistol despite nephrititis or any affliction he might have, JUDGE TOM HARSH, of Second Criminal Court, told GEORGE CANALE, LUCCHESSI'S lawyer.

HUNT FOR WOUNDED CHEWING GUM BANDIT--J.L. HAGAN, night watchman at a business place on

Second St., said he fired one shot at the negro, who dropped to the ground and

immediately got up and fled.  A chewing gum machine partially filled with pennies, was

left by the negro.

GETS FIVE YEARS--JOE FISHER, negro, pleaded guilty in Second criminal court Tuesday, of

involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to not more than five years in Nashville

prison.  FISHER hit STEVE CROWELEY, negro, over the head with a brick after learning of

CROWLEY'S attentions to his wife.

U.S.PROBES MELLETT KILLING. CLEVELAND,OHIO. JAN.4.--New and perhaps startling

developments were anticipated here Tuesday in the DON R. MELLETT murder case, when it

was learned that a federal investigation had been started by U.S. ATTORNEY

A.E.BERSTEIN. DECTIVE ORA SLATER AND PROSECUTOR HENRY HARTER, who aided in obtaining

a conviction for PATRICK E.MCDERMONT,now facing a life sentence, conferred Tuesday

with BERNSTIEN.  Evidence that at least one member of the Canton police department

helped conceal McDEARMONT after MELLETT's assassination.

WISP OF HAIR ACCUSES MAN.MINEOLA,N.Y.JAN.4.--a wisp of hair, torn from a man's head

and two bone buttons, snatched from his coat by a woman in her fierce struggle to

live, caused the arrest for murder early today of HAROLE E.WEBSTER,a real estate

dealer of Miami, Fla. District.   Attorney ELVIN N. EDWARDS announced after questioning

WEBSTER, he confessed to beating his mother-in-law to death.  The body of the

victim, MRS.CATHERINE GALLAWAY,45,was found yesterday.  The hair and buttons clutched

in her hands.WEBSTER admitted crushing his mother's-in-law skull in a quarrel after

she protested his taking away his infant son after a fight with his wife.

TROLLEY BANDIT IS GIVEN THREE YEARS--One of four negroes who have been holding up

street cars recently was sentenced to three years in the Nashville prison.  WILLIS

WALKER, alias "SPERT," pleaded guilty to holding up D.E. JOHNSON, conductor and robbing

him of $11.56.

COMES TO LIFE AFTER INSURANCE PAID--Los Angeles,Jan.4.Supposedly dead since last

September, when his home near Fitzgerald, Ga., burned to the ground and his "widow"

collected $7500 insurance, HARRY K. SLIGH was arrested by Los Angeles police today.

BOXCAR DRAGES MAN TO DEATH--ARCH DERRINGTON,28,Southern railroad brakeman,was killed

early Tuesday when his foot was caught in a boxcar and he was dragged 100 feet down

the tracks in the Southern yards.  Funeral arrangements, in charge of Hinton are

incomplete.  DERRINGTON is survived by his wife, MRS. MAMIE DERRINGTON; a four-year-old

son, HAL DERRINGTON; his mother; four brothers and one sister.  He lived at Normal.

HOLD ANOTHER IN PAYROLL JOB--CONDE CORLEY,30,alleged gunman and bandit, was taken

into custody for questioning in connection with the robbery Saturday of the Pidgeon-

Thomas Iron Company payroll of $1,449.96.CORLEY is the third man held in the robbery

of R.C. BECKER. DAN FOLEY,20,and VIRGIL ATHERTON,17, are also believed to be involved.

BLIND ATTORNEY IS WELCOMED TO COURT--N.R. JONES, JR., blind attorney, who was recently

admitted to the Bar after graduating from the Memphis School of Law.  The introduction

to Federal Judge ANDERSON was made by U.S. District Attorney LINDSEY B. PHILLIPS, who

lives just across the street from JONES.  Judge ANDERSON welcomed JONES to the Federal

Bar.

"PECAN BOY" RECOVERS, BUT QUESTION IS, OF WHAT--BUSTER EDMISTON,12,was conscious

Tuesday and "much improved," but physicians at Baptist Hospital still are unable to

decide just what is wrong with him.  BUSTER lay in a state of coma for two days, after

being brought to the hospital by his father.  The parent found him lying unconscious

beneath a tree near his home at Oakville. X-Rays ruled out a fall.

BOY IS HURT WHEN TRUCK HITS BICYCLE--DAN ANDERSON,7,of Faxon Ave. ,was recovering

Tuesday in St. Joseph's Hospital from injuries received Monday when he was struck and

thrown from his bicycle by HERMAN JACKSON,36,negro of Lane Ave. JACKSON was arraigned

in city court Tuesday on charges of reckless driving and assault & battery.

JUDGE IS ILL--J.P.M. HAMMER sat on the bench in first criminal court Tuesday.  Judge

RICHARDS is suffering from a cold.

PROMINENT GROCER DIES;NASHVILLE,TENN.JAN.4--Funeral services for

D.E.DERRYBERRY,53,wholesale grocer, who died Monday at a hospital here are being

delayed, pending the arrival of relatives from distant points.  He is survived by his

parents, widow, three sons and two daughters.

SELLS MANY STAMPS.TREZEVANT,TENN.JAN.4--DR.JOHN G. HOLMES, postmaster,reports receipts

for the Trezevant office for 1925 were $2,822.83;and for 1926,$2,998.17,an increase

of $175.24.

COURT CONVENES.BOLIVAR,TENN.JAN.4--Circuit Court opened in Bolivar for Hardeman co

Monday.Judge R.B.BAPTIST is presiding,and Attorney General WATKINS is in charge of

prosecution.  E.L.HURT is clerk of court and FESTUS RHODES, foreman of the jury.

GET FIVE-YEAR PRISON TERMS--H.E.WALKER and CARL SCHREIBER pleaded guilty to petty

larcency in first criminal court and was sentenced to 5 years in Nashville

prison.They were indicted recently for holding up ALBERT TURNER and robbing him of

$62. JAMES VANCE, negro, must spend the next 60 days in the workhouse for stealing a

ham from Morris & Co.

DEATH FOR SPANKING. CHICAGO.JAN.4--MRS.EMMA HOHOFF died here from an injury believed

to have been received while spanking her small son.  The boy is thought to have

accidentally butted her in the stomach while seeking to elude her.

SEEKS $1500 PLACED IN DEFUNCT BANK--The defunct Critten-co bank accepted his deposit

of $1500 after it knew it was defunct,F.A.DANTZIER charges in a suit filed Monday in

chancery court to recover the sum.DANTZIER also names Union & Planters bank through

which his deposit was cleared,and LOID RAINWATER,Arkansas commissioner as

defendants.

WOMAN IS HELD FOR TAKING DIAMOND PIN--MRS. BETTIE LEE WILSON,21, Claridge guest, was to

explain in city court Tuesday why she had a $100 diamond bar pin, the property of

MRS.MARY LEE LAMPKIN.   MRS. WILSON was a visitor at the home of MRS. LAMPKIN, Lamar-

blvd, Dec.31 MRS. LAMPKIN says, and that she missed her bar pin.  MRS.WILSON was charged

with larcency.

ceremony,the couple left by car for Cleveland,where they will make their new home.

guests, MRS.R.W. DOUGLAS,JR.,and MRS. GORDON W.TRASK.48 guests were invited to her home

on Cowdan-st to meet her guests.  MRS. DOUGLAS wore a model of black lace, MRS. DOUGLAS

JR., wore black Chantilly lace over flesh.  MRS. TRASK wore a gown of yellow flowered

chiffon.  Wednesday MRS. DOUGLAS and her guests will be entertained by MRS. AUSTIN

CAREY, who will tender a tea in her home on Forest st.

Church of MISS FAYE McLEMORE to CHARLES LANGDEIN.The ceremony was performed by

Rev.J.L .HORTON in presence of only friends and relatives.  MRS.O.P.PARKER and

MRS.L.F.BROADWAY were in charge of wedding music.The bride wore a gown of turquoise

blue taffeta, trimmed in gold.  MISS FLORENCE McLEMORE, her sister was her only

attendant,in a model of lavender silk crepe.MRS.FRANK EASTERDAY was matron of

honor,in a gown of pink taffeta,ADRAIN WESTERFIELD was best man, and FRANK EASTERDAY

was groomsman.  JACK SMALLWOOD and MILTON WESTERFIELD were ushers.

MRS. JENNIE GOLDSBY BLACK--announces the marriage of her daughter, MISS LOIS CARROL

BLACK to ALFRED SCHADLE, formerly of Cincinnati,now of Memphis.  The wedding took place

at the parsonage of the Central Baptist Church Christmas Eve, Dr. BEN COX read the

ceremony in the presence of a small group of relatives and friends.

THE DEAD DON'T PAY;CHICAGO.JAN.4--Appearing before JUDGE JOSEPH SABATH to prosecute

her husband for failure to pay alimony, MRS. ELIZABETH BEACH USHER learned for the

first time that her husband, LOUIS USHER, former All-American football player of

Syracuse university had been killed in an auto accident New Year's Day.

HIT-AND-RUN VICTIM DYING--GEORGE BUFORD,40,negro was found lying in the street at

Calhoun-av and Mississippi-blvd at 10 p.m. Monday.  His skull was fractured, both legs

broken below the knee and his chest crushed.  Deputy sheriffs CLARK & WILLIS took him

to General Hospital.  Witnesses told police an auto struck BUFORD, and that the driver

put on speed and left.

RICH MAN ACCUSES WIFE OF EXTORTION;MIAMI,FLA.JAN.4--Under threat of prosecution

under the Mann Act, HAMILTON MICHELSON, former wealthy fruit packer, paid over to his

wife property valued at $1,000,000,according to petition filed in circuit court

here. MICHELSON seeks to recover the property, pleading that he is impoverished by the

"settlement" coupled with hurricane losses.  The petition says the threats followed a

tour of Yellowstone park with a girl clerk of MICHELSON'S.  The MICHELSONS were

divorced last April after being married 21 years.

SAY HUSBANDS CRUEL--Two wives charge cruelty in divorce petitions filed in circuit

court Monday.  MRS. VIRGINIA GRIGSBY HALLAN says LLOYD LONGSTREET HALLAN was cruel and

deserted her.  She wants restoration of her maiden name.   MONNIE S. DERRIG says MICHAEL

J. DERRIG also failed to provide for her.

VICTIMS OF DAN CUPID--Baldwyn,Miss.Jan.4.CHARLIE STRANGE and MISS MARY WHITE motored

to Guntown, Miss., where they were married by Rev.HAROLD LINK, of Baldwyn. 

TREZEVANT,TENN.JAN.4--Three marriages during Christmas holidays were reported by the

correspondant of the McKenzie Banner from the Newbill community, in the Nineteenth District, near here.  They were HOLDER BRYANT & MISS ODEAN BROWN; CLYDE COLEMAN & MISS BROWNING; DICK BOBLE & MISS AVA WILLIAMS.

Tupelo, Miss., were married Sunday in the home of MR.& MRS.WERNER EBNER with

AUTO VICTIM IS BURIED IN TEXAS--The body of MRS. HARRIET LUCILLE LEE, 197

S. Lauderdale, who was instantly killed in an auto accident near Little Rock late

Monday and ?? accompanied the body to Houston.C.C.BERRYHILL,of Hackleburg,Ala.,who

was with MRS. LEE when she was killed, is still in a serious condition at a Little

Rock hospital, but was able to make a statement yesterday.

KILL BANDIT IN CAR WITH LOOT FROM STORE.HELENA,ARK.JAN.4--Phillips-co deputies early

today shot and killed an unidentified bandit and wounded another when the pair

refused to heed their commands to halt on the road between Oneida and Harris

Spur.  The deputies, BROMWELL, TONEY and WEBSTER are searching the woods for the wounded

bandit.  The deputies, under Sheriff J.D. MAYS, received a call early today that

J.L. TURNER's Store,at Turner's Postoffice, Ark. had been robbed.

MEMPHIAN PREFERS LOSING CAR TO LIFE. JACKSON,MISS.JAN.4--Recovery of two abandoned

cars in the floodwaters of Big Black river, near Flora, Madison-co, cars identified as

the property of VAUGHN HILEN of Memphis and CHARLIE BENNETT of Yazoo City, who were

reported to have left their machines to their fates.  S.T. COGGINS, Flora negro preacher, and his eight-year-old son were drowned in a coupe recovered near Bentonia.  They were submerged since last Tuesday.

AGED WOMAN HURT.ASHLAND,MISS.JAN.4--MRS.SALLIE DUNCAN,81,mistaking the cellar door

for the entrance into the living room, fell into the cellar, bruising herself severely.  Fractured ribs and severe bruises will keep her in bed for weeks.

RESCUE 'HANGED MAN' JERSEY CITY,N.J.JAN.4--PETER MAAS,68-year-old watchman, hung head down over a railway cut for hours before he could attract the notice of passersby.  His foot was caught by a steel cable after he stumbled from a rock.  He is seriously ill in a hospital here.

THRICE DECORATED VETERAN ID DEAD;MERIDIAN,MISS.JAN.4--FRED GUNN, formerly of this

place, who received three wartime decorations because of gallant service in giving

first aid to wounded comrades in full view of the enemy, died in a government

hospital in Curryville, Texas Sunday.  Decorations were personally signed by WOODROW

WILSON, one by PERISHING and the other by MAJOR GENERAL BULLARD. Funeral services

were held in Jackson Tuesday.  Death resulted from wounds and gas.

WORRY OVER FARM LEADS TO TRAGEDY. DRESDEN,TENN. JAN.4--Three months ago, MARY

RAMBO,18,who lived eight miles east of Dresden, committed suicide by hanging herself

with a rope in her home. THOMAS RAMBO, her father, attempted to kill himself Monday by

hanging and being unsuccessful in that, cut his throat with a razor. Worry over the

death of his daughter and farming trouble is believed to have caused RAMBO to

attempt suicide.

POTATO HOUSE BURNS;TREZEVANT,TENN.JAN.4--a potato storage house belonging to GEORGE

BIGHAM, living three miles south of Trezevant was destroyed by fire. The loss about

$1000,insurance of $500.

BROTHER DIES--MRS. G.C. HARPOLE(?),1759 Tutwiler-Ave, was called to

Senatobia, Miss., Monday by the death of her brother, THEODORE BROWNLEE. The funeral was

held Tuesday.
