DEATH MAY SAVE NEGRO FROM PRISON--If WESLEY BATTLE,negro,who is near death in a

hospital,dies,GEORGE BEAN,negro will not face a prison term of at least 5 to 10

years.GEORGE is charged with robbing WESLEY several weeks ago of his wallet and

money.If he dies or fails to prosecute,GEORGE will be freed of all charges.

CHAMPION OF AUDIT FIGHT IS ELECTED.ALAMO,TENN.The pro-audit faction of Crockett

County had all the better argument in county court session here.SQUIRE

S.H.BURNETT, who had led the fight for the county audit was elected chairman by a

majority of almost two to one over the champion of the antis, C.C. CARTER.  CARTER had

been chairman for the past two terms, but was recently indicted on charges of

forgery, embezzlement, larcency, misuse of public funds to his own use.His trial on

these charges will come up at the January term of circuit court.  Indicted on the

same charges were County Supt.W.B.JONES and J.C.McLEAN, member of the county school

board.

UNION CITY,TENN.JAN.5--HARRIS BLAKEMORE,35,was instantly killed Tuesday by a N.C.&

St.L.local train, between Gibbs and Union City.BLAKEMORE,a timber buyer,resided at

Harris,Tenn.,and the father of several children.  He was enroute to Gibbs where he

expected to take a train to his home in Harris.It is believed he sat on the track

to rest and fell asleep.  The body was brought to Union City by the train that struck

him.

SELMER,TENN.JAN.5--T.C.ROBINSON,78,prominent farmer and for a number of years a

member of the McNairy County Court, died at his home in the northern part of the

county.  He is survived by his aged wife and a number of children.

HICKORY FLAT,MISS.JAN.5--A wedding which has created a great deal of interest was

that of R.W.FARROW,70,and peg-legged, and MISS ETHEL JACKSON,16,a school girl.The

wedding was recently performed by MAYOR COARSON of Ashland,in the presence of two

witnesses.soon after the wedding, the happy couple left for their honeymoon to

points in Tennessee.

FUNERAL SERVICES--for ARCH DERRINGTON,23,by Rev.JAMES H. OAKLEY at the funeral home

of J.T.Hinton & Son at 3 p.m.Wednesday. MR.DERRINGTON died Tuesday morning at the

Methodist Hospital.Interment in Elmwood Cemetery.Survivors are his widow,MAMIE

McKENZIE DERRINGTON; a son,WILLIAN HAL DERRINGTON,both of Normal,Tenn.;his

mother,MRS.A.K.DERRINGTON,of Meridian,Miss.;two sisters,MRS.G.W.H.FOSTER of

S.FRAZER at the JOHNSTON home,37 S.Barksdale-st Wednesday.Survivors are two

daughters,MRS.A.G.SMITH,JR.,of Roanoke,Va.,and MRS.MARGARET J.MADDEN.

FUNERAL SERVICES--for CHARLIE HODGES,63,were held at Thompson Brothers funeral home

at 11 a.m.Wednesday,Rev.WALTER M.WHITE officiating.Surviving MR.HODGES are two

sisters,MRS.LIZZIE SNOWDEN and MRS.A.V.OWENS; and three brothers,R.F.HODGES,ALBERT

HODGES and WILL HODGES.

FUNERAL SERVICES--for MRS.ADDIE HAIRE,45,conducted by Rev.W.L.NORRIS,were held at

the HAIRE home,37 E.Gage-st.Wednesday.Burial in Forest Hill cemetery.MRS.HAIRE is

survived by her husband,F.L.HAIRE; two sons,MORRIS HAIRE and LALAB HAIRE,and three

daughters,MRS.ROBERT WINDALIN(?),MRS.L.S.BARTLETT and MRS.KATIE BROENS,all of this

city.

FUNERAL SERVICES--for KENNEDY DAILEY,29,were conducted by Rev.CHARLES NOYES TYNDELL

at the funeral home of J.W.NORRIS Wednesday.The body was sent to

Coffeyville,Miss.,for burial.Surviving are his widow,MRS.DORIS BROWN DAILEY;

mother,MRS.D.K.ANTHONY; and an uncle,WILL KENNEDY of Coffeyville,Miss.

JOHN J.HENNESSEY--70,died at his home,309 S.Third St.Tuesday.Surviving him are a

sister,MRS.FRANK CLARKE of San Diego,calif.;a nephew,JOSEPH CROTTY of Memphis; two

neices,MISS KATE CROTTY of Memphis and MRS.MARY BROWN of New Orleans,La.;and a

FUNERAL SERVICES--for ABNER O.ROGERS,who died Saturday at Ashville,N.C.will be held

from the Collins Funeral Home Thursday.Burial in Elmwood Cemetery.He is survived by

daughter,MRS.B.C.CLOYES; and a brother,JOHN O.ROGERS,of Versailes,Ky.

ATLANTA,GA.,JAN.5--MR.& MRS.BERRY F.BATES of Alanta,were killed Tuesday night when

the "Dixie Flyer" crashed into their auto at an Oakland City grade crossing.Both

died in an Atlanta hospital soon after the accident.

THE FIRST HIT AND RUN DRIVER OF YEAR--whose car left death trailing in its wake was

at large Wednesday.The driver is sought on a charge of manslaughter for the death

of GEORGE BUFORD,40,negro,436 St.Paul st,who Monday night was run doen and left

dying in the street at Calhoun and Mississippi.BUFORD died Tuesday.

GRILL NEGRO IN SLASHING MAN AND HOUSEKEEPER--A bloody handprint and a cigaret stub

were the weapons with which police Friday hoped to wring from ELLIS DAVIS,negro,a

confession that he Thursday night murdered PAUL BROWNE,740 Gallaway ave and

probably fatally slashed MRS.FANNIE MILLER,49,his housekeeper.BROWNE,50.died at

2:30 a.m. in St.Joseph's hospital from a slashed throught and five fractures of the

skull,received during a battle in his home Thursday at 7:15 p.m.MRS.MILLER,near

death with terible slashes in the throat and loss of blood,also is in St.Joseph

hospital,she has not been informed of BROWNE's death,but has postively identified

DAVIS as the assailant.DAVIS denies the murder and is attempting to prove an

alibi.No charges have been filed against him yet.Two other negroes are held,but are

expected to furnish info about DAVIS.About 7 p.m.MRS.T.J.WILLIAMS,next door

neighbor saw a negro walking up and down in front of the BROWNE home but didnot see

his face.At 7:15 p.m.,J.F.GUNN,735 Gallaway ave heard screams,snatched up his gun

and ran to the BROWNE home.He saw the negro fleeing but he was to far away to

shoot.He called police,they found MRS.MILLER lying in the doorway and BROWNE in the

front bedroom.BROWNE never regained consciousness,but MRS.MILLER was able to gasp

out her story.

VICTIM AND MURDERER--A tire chain tool was used to slay MRS.CATHERINE GALLAWAY at

Hempstead,Long Island.It was said by authorities that HAROLD F.WEBSTER,her son-in-

law,confessed the killing.WEBSTER is quoted as explaining that she threatened to

advise her daughter to divorce him and had interfered when he went to remove his

year-old son from the GALLAWAY home.

HUSBAND DRUNKARD DIVORCE PLEA SAYS--Charging that THOMAS LEE MILLER,her husband,is

now in Gartly-Ramsey hospital recovering from a prolonged liquor spree,MRS.MAY

GALLAWAY MILLER filed suit Friday in circuit court for divorce.She says he is a

habitual drunkard and charges extreme cruelty and inhuman treatment.She alleges

MILLER.at the time of their marriage in 1924,was an assistant of

T.H.TUTWILER,president of Memphis Street Railway,but lost his position because of

his love of liquor.

SUES FOR DAMAGES--Suit for $1500 damages was filed Friday in circuit court by

W.C.CANNON,negro contractor,againest A.GRANDI and his wife.CANNON alleges an auto

driven by GRANDI struck his auto while parked before his home,788 Mississippi ave

January 2nd and completely wrecked it.

LATE WIRE FLASHES BY THE UNITED PRESS--Newspaper man killed when car

wrecks.Wilmington,N.C.January 7.-O.C.FILIYAW,former telegraph editor of the

Wilmington Morning Star,was instantly killed today when his auto hit a tree and

overturned.

AMMONIA GAS VICTIM BETTER--After spending Wednesday night in Baptist hospital

recovering from ammonia fumes,MRS.BESSIE DODSON,25,returned to her work at the

Grennan Bakery Co.,374 S.Front st.Thursday Morning.(picture of her and her 11-

year-old daughter,Rosa.) Two others,MARIAN SMITH,carpenter and JAMES

MOORE,negro,were also asphyxiated,but recovered.

GILLISPIE IS SENTENCED--RAYMOND GILLESPIE was sentenced to five years in nashville

prison in First Criminal Court Friday on charges of robbing Bowers Store No.56 on

July 17.WILLIE GILLESPIE and WILLIE McCARTHY charged with aiding in the robbery

were acquitted.

JAIL FOR OFFICERS--who fail to appear as witnesses for the State in criminal cases

are likely to be brought in forcibly in the future and compelled to pay an

attachment fee of $2.30.SGT.HOYLE and Patrolman LAWHORN failed to appear in first

criminal court Friday to prosecute T.R.ALEXANDER on charges of reckless

driving."Send out and get them," ordered Assistant Attorney-General PHIL

WALLACE,"and serve an attachment warrant on them to get them here." Warrants were

made out and a deputy called Chief BURNEY and asked about the officiers. "Throw

them in jail," BURNEY said, "I told them last night to be in court this morning." A

few minutes later Sgt.HOYLE came running into the courtroom out of breath,"I

overslept." The case was tried without LAWHORN.

FINED ON LIQUOR CHARGE--J.A.CRUMP was fined $100 in first criminal court Friday on

charges of violating the liqour law.

EX-DEPUTY SHERIFF INDICTED FOR MURDER--E.E.BAUGH,former deputy sheriff,was indicted

for first degree murder and carring a pistol by the grand jury in first criminal

court Friday.BAUGH shot and killed WILL PARKER,negro,last Sunday,during a craps

game.BAUGH charges that PARKER sold him a half pint of bad whiskey and that he made

the negro return the money.The negro,BAUGH says,returned with a knife and attempted

to stab him.The negro was killed.Witnesses to the shooting failed to corroborate

BAUGH's story of the killing.The grand jury also gave true bills for WILL

WILSON,indicted for robbery and OWLIE DELL for murder.15 other indictments and four

not true bills were returned by the grand jury.

SPECIAL DISPATCH.CLARKSVILLE,MISS.JAN 7--Coahoma Co.officers puzzled in their

search for Hilda,nine years,daughter of DR.W.H.McCRACKEN,said the mother of the

child disappeared today.She is said to have left Clarksdale in an

auto.DR.McCRACKEN,who slew FRANK EDWARDS,clerk,on the street here several weeks

ago,filed a habeas corpus plea several days ago,asking that HILDA and another

daughter be taken from their mother.He charged she was not a proper person to have

the children.Chancellor HARVEY McGEHEE today said that action in the case awaited

the course taken by attorneys.

SEEKS DIVORCE.SAYS WIFE IS TOO ROUGH--Because he claims his wife attempted to shoot

him and beat him with a slipper when he disarmed her,GEORGE A.WAGNER Friday

launched an attempt in circuit court to recapture single bliss.WAGNER claimed he

never lived after the marriage with his wife,ELSIE DELANO WAGNER.He said he visited

her at her invitation one night recently,and she pulled a piston on him but the

weapon failed to discharge.He and his nephew disarmed her,but she pulled off her

slipper and inflicted severe bruises on both of them.

JULIA HANSON HUFFMAN--18,ask from the Court restoration of her maiden name because

she alleged matrimony did not restrain her husband from assuming all the

prerogatives of singleness.MRS.HUFFMAN alleged her husband,M.L.HUFFMAN,recently

told her they had married to young,then abandoned her and has failed to contribute

SCOOBA,MISS.JAN.7--LOUISE HALL,of the faculty of Kemper County Agriculyural High

School,was the victim of a serious accident.Returning to her duties here after a

10-day stay at her home in Koscuisko,she was thrown from the steps of the passenger

train while alighting.One arm was badly cut.She was also bruised about her body.

SPECIAL DISPATCH BLYTHEVILLE,ARK.JAN.7--JANE McADAMS,6,daughter of MRS.LUCY

McADAMS,broke her knee when she fell from a swing in which she was playing.The leg

had been in a brace prior to the accident.She was taken to DR.CAMPBELL's Clinic in

Memphis.

NEW STORE MANAGER COVINGTON,TENN.JAN.7--W.J.WOODY arrived in Covington this week

from Jackson to take charge of the local Saunders Store.R.K.McBRIDE,goes from here

to Union City where he will take charge of a similar store.

HOG CHORLERA IN TIPTON COVINGTON,TENN.JAN.7--DR.ED WALL,veterinary surgeon and

county livestock inspector here,reports that hog cholera is raging in Lauderdale

County.This disease is also appearing in many sections of Tipton County.

ARRANGE LECTURE COVINGTON,TENN.JAN.7--TOM STEELE,of Ripley will lecture to the

Men's Bible Class of First Presbyterian Church of Covington Sunday morning.

MISSING DRUGGIST SUED FOR DIVORCE.PINE BLUFF,ARK.JAN.7--Beating,cruelty and

incompatibility were the charges against D.W.STRONG,missing drug store

proprietor,by his wife,MRS.STRONG,who filed suit for divorce today.STRONG

disappeared Monday night,leaving a note on the table explaining everything to his

wife.He started the Star Drug Store five years ago with $3,500 belonging to his

wife.To repay MRS.STRONG for the "loan," he left everything to her,except his bank

account and the money in the store cash drawer,amounting to $19,000.He valued the

property left at $35,000.

MANY FAMILIES QUARANTINED IN TIPTON COUNTY.COVINGTON,TENN.,JAN.7--

DR.G.B.GILLESPIE,county health physician,reports that several new cases of smallpox

made their appearance in Tipton County.Two new cases are reported in the family of

JOHN MOORE,negro,which family has 13 members; two cases in the family of BOB

COCHRAN,who resides near Brighton.

office.Those re-elected were FRANK STANFORD,marshal; W.F.HENSON,

R.B.SMITH,JR.,alderman.New officials elected were;SMITH BUTLER,Mayor, C.F.DIXON,

R.J.SHANNON, and J.M.HATCHER,alderman,

TWO EX-CONVICTS GET YEAR FOR AUTO THEFT--T.J.TUTTLE and BENJAMIN S.SUMMERS,who have

just completed a six-month term in a Kansas jail,and accepted a sentence of one

year and one day at Atlanta before Federal Judge ANDERSON Thursday.They pleaded

guilty to stealing an auto from URA ANDERSON at Springdale,Ark.,and bringing it to

YOUNG MAN IS HUNTED IN GIRL'S DEATH--A jealous rejected lover was sought Saturday

with the murder of MISS GRACE BENNETT,26, at 12:30 a.m.,as she reached her home,194

w.Somerville st.MISS BENNETT was shot at close range.The bullet entered her right

breast.Neighbors said they heard two shots.When they reached MISS BENNETT,she was

dying and unable to speak.A web of circumstantial evidence,including an alleged

attempt to kill MISS BENNETT several days ago,has led homicide detectives to hunt

for MARSHALL SIGNER,28,of 208 S.Somerville st.Jilted two weeks ago,MISS BENNETT'S

friends told police that he had persistently tried to effect a reconcilation.

PATIENT CUTS SELF TO DEATH--Asking his nurse to step out of the room while he

shaved,J.G.COLLINS,49,of Matson,Miss.,ended his life by slashing his throat in

Methodist hospital Saturday.When MISS DORA BOLTON, COLLINS'nurse returned he lay

dead.DR.GEORGE LITTLETON said COLLINS was despondent because of his

illness.Thompson Bros.will send the body to Matson for burial.

MOUSE IS BLAMED FOR AUTO ACCIDENT--The first auto accident caused by a mouse has

been recorded.While trying to kill a mouse in the bottom of his

car,J.L.WILLIAMS,president of the Bank of Osceola,Osceola,Ark.,lost control of his

machine.The car went into a ditch and WILLIAMS was seriously hurt.He is at

DR.WILLIS C.CAMPBELL's clinic,recovering from broken bones in his knee and ankle.

SALESMAN IS CHARGED WITH SLAYING NEGRO--R.L.GILMORE,33,magazine salesman,confessed

slayer of WILLIE HENDERSON,negro,first homicide of 1927,was charged with

murder.GILMORE was arrested at his home,Russellville,Ark.,two days ago and brought

to Memphis Thursday.The attack took place in GILMORE'S room at 199 Monroe ave on

New Year's night.HENDERSON,the house boy of the rooming house attacked him with a

bucket GILMORE says."I was drunk at the time," he told Sergt.LEMMER, "but I had to

use the table leg in self-defense." The negro's skull was fractured by the blow.He

died two days later.

LEGAL RECORD SAYS BERTIG TOOK LIFE.PARAGOULD,ARK.JAN.8--AD BERTIG,head of Bertig

Brothers,Inc.,whose death on Dec.12th has been shrouded in mystery,killed

himself,according to DR.JAMES A.DILLMAN,the physician who signed the death

certificate.BERTIG was born in Austria,and had risen from the work of a dishwasher

to be one of the foremost financiers in Northeast,Ark.and Southeast,Mo.The

Paragould Bank closed shortly after his death.The Bertig Firm was indebted to the

bank.

SEEKS $10,000 DAMAGES--While A.Y.YOUNG was a guest in the auto of

Y.B.Goff,realestate man,the car plunged down an embankment,and YOUNG was injured

seriously,he alleges in a suit for $10,000 damages filed in circuit court.

GIRL HURT AS AUTO CRASHES INTO POLE--MISS ANNIE MAY STOUT,25,120 N.McLean blvd.,was

injured Saturday when an auto driven by W.W.HILDEBRAND,of Hollywood,crashed into a

telephone pole.She was treated at General Hospital.

DEPUTY TO DENY MURDER CHARGES--E.E.BAUGH,former deputy sheriff,will be arraigned

Monday on a charge of murder for the slaying of WILL PARKER,negro.He says he will

plead not guilty.

DEPUTY A.S.BUFORD--headed a squsrd of deputies Saturday who were searching for

HOMER CLEAVES,negro,said to have thrown LEON COLE,16,negro,off the roof of a store

on Thomas ave.COLE'S legs were broken in two places.He is at General

Hospital.Witnesses say the youths were quarreling.

DR.C.RAY COVINGTON--of Memphis Small Animal clinic,is in Methodist hospital as the

result of injuries suffered when his auto was struck early Saturday and totally

demolished at McLean blvd by a freight train.He suffered a sprained back and

shoulders in addition to severe cuts and abrasions.He is recoving.

U.C.BROWN--19,961 Oakview st was to be arraigned in city court Saturday on a charge

of speeding.He is alleged to have been making 34 miles an hour when arrested by

Motorcycle Officers HOLLOHAN and TURNER.(Ah,for the old days past; speeds on the

highways that was considered speeding,34 miles an hour.)

A DIVORCE AND $5000--alimony was asked by MRS.ALICE CHALK CRAWFORD in a bill filed

in chancery court.She charges cruelty and asks for custody of their only child.

CRUSHED BOY'S BODY INDENTIFIED--The body of MILES ISBELL,18,found with his head

crushed in a Frisco freight car at K.C. junction near Bellevue blvd Wednesday,was

sent early Saturday to his home near Nettleton,Ark.,after identification by his

father.The car,loaded at Nettleton,was sealed,ISBELL entered the car through an

opening by a broken board.J.H.DILLON,coronor,said a tie had slipped and pinned the

boy's head against the end of the car.His father heard of the finding of the body

at Lepanto,Ark.,and came late Friday and identified the body.

GETS $400 FOR HURTS--E.L.TAPPIN,negro truck driver sueing Dawson Brothers &

Beaver,contractors,for $12,000 damages for injuries,was awarded $400 by a jury in

circuit court.TAPPIN and his wife were driving one of the company's trucks,when the

brakes failed to hold on a hill,and the car turned over.

Howell,Ark.,Wednesday evening,were conducted bt Rev.J.W.MOORE,of Helena Ark.,at

Cotton Plant,Ark.,Friday afternoon.Burial will be in Cotton Plant

widow,MRS.GRACE OABORNE of Howell,Ark; a daughter,MRS.ROBERT E.GREEN,of

FUNERAL SERVICES--for GROVER C.HENKE,38,who died at the U.S.Veterans' hospital

Saturday.Burial was in the National Cemetery.MR.HENKE is survived by his

THE BODY OF G.Y.MORTON--69,who died at the Baptist hospital Thursday,was sent from

the funeral home of Spencer Sturla at 4:15 p.m.Friday to Ripley,Miss.,where

services were held Saturday morning.Burial was in Ripley.MR.MORTON is survived by

his widow,FANNIE MORTON; one daughter,MISS MILDRED MORTON,of Ripley; and three

sons,W.N.MORTON of Ripley,J.W.MORTON of Memphis anf G.Y.MORTON of Kansas City,Mo.

NILES ISBELL--17,found dead in a freight car in Memphis,was forwarded Saturday

MRS.ANNA O.PETTY--who died in Chicago,Illinois Wednesday,services were held from

the funeral home of McDowell & Monteverde Saturday,with services at St.Brigid's

church at 9 a.m.Burial in Calvary Cemetery.MRS.PETTY is survived by her

husband,P.D.PETTY; two children,EDWARD PETTY and JEAN PETTY; and two

aunts,MRS.ELIZABETH JOBE of Chicago and MRS.MARY FITZGERALD of Memphis.

HICKORY FLAT,MISS.JAN.8--GUSS HARPER,fireman for the Carr-Lowry Lumber

plant,located three miles south of this place,was severly scalded when a steam pipe

became unfastened,blowing hot steam in HARPER'S face.HARPER saved his sight by

quickly throwing his arm over his eyes.He was taken to New Albany hospital.

HICKORY FLAT,MISS.JAN.8--CLOTHING OF ALVIS JOHNSON,9,schoolboy,saturated with

gasoline and oils,ignited when he stood to near an open fireplace.The flames were

extinguished,but not before the boy was seriously burned.

HICKORY FLAT,MISS.JAN.8--HOLLIS SIMPSON,lumber inspector for the Carr-Lowry Lumber

company of this place,was injured when struck near the eye by a piece of lumder at

the plant here.

DIERKS,ARK.JAN.8--LAWRENCE BOWDEN,23,was killed Friday when the auto in which he

was riding overturned.Five occupants were hurt.LEE STRICKLAND,22,and VIRGINIA

DONALSON,20,are not expected to live.and MYRTLE ELHART,18,and OLIVER FOLAND,22,were

badly hurt.ELSIE STRICKLAND,19,was slightly bruised.They were on their way to the

Dierks-Murfreesboro basketball game.

C.C.CARLIN--29,had recovered Saturday from slight injuries received at 7 p.m.

Friday, when he stepped from an auto at N. Courtland and into the path of a

policeman's car.PATROLMAN F.L. GUSTAVUS, driving the city car struck CARLIN. He called

a Hinton ambulance and CARLIN was treated at Baptist hospital and released.
