1914 - 1916
Real Estate Transfers---C.M. Midyett to Vault Johnson, undivided interest in
J.A. Midyett estate in the 5th district,$350.(from Nov.25th to Dec.9th,1914.
Miss Annie White and Mr.Homer Jones were quietly married in Jackson last week. Bob
Scott, of Jackson, attended the funeral of his uncle, S.L. Scott Wednesday.
Mrs. Annie Moore of Milan, has been here during the illness and death of her
brother, S.L.Scott.
Mr.Ernest Scott & sister, Miss Lalah of Dallas,TX, attended the funeral of their
father ,S.L.Scott, Wednesday.
Mr.S.L.Scott died Tuesday morning at 3 a.m. at his home on College Street, He was 66
years of age, interment in Oakland Cem. He is survived by his widow and 13 children;
Misses Miriam & Edith of this place; Misses Gertie, Lalah & Lena of Dallas, Tx.; Miss
Nannie Mai of Shreveport, La.; Mesdames C.P. Miller & R. Blair of Dallas, TX; five
sons, Harry,Claude,Earl,Clifton & Ernest, all of Tx.
Born to Mr.& Mrs.Tony Conway on Monday,Dec.7th,a girl.
Trenton,TN.,Dec.8---Prof.Chas.Morris,Principal of the Edison High School,was quite
severly, although not fatally wounded to-day by knife wounds inflicted in and about
the throat,in the hands of Buster Ward, also of near Edison.It seems the trouble
arose over a recently-made rule of the prinicple, in which it was against his will
that the boys and girls be together to and from school,this rule was being repeatedly
broken and to enforce it,he suspended pupils who broke the rules.It seems that Mr.
Ward had done the courtesy of extending to Miss Cora Mai Tuggle,a young lady of about
16,a seat behind him on his stead. She was suspended from scholl.(Morris was refered
to also as Morrison in the article)
In Memory----Mr.Arch Sloan's great grandparents came from Scotland to this country
during a religious persecution. His grandfather, ?.D.Sloan,settled within four miles
of Humboldt. His father, Archibald W.Sloan was reared on the adjoining farm. There
Arch E.Sloan was reared. He joined the Methodist Episcopal Church South at the age of
27 years, and held his membership 20 years. He died Nov.24th,1914.
Nashville,TN.,Dec.4----Robert Primm, son of the late ex-sheriff J. W. Primm of
Rutherford County, was shot and killed at Murfreesboro this afternoon by Policeman
Fount Pitts.It is claimed that Primm was arrested after a complaint that he was
raising a disturbance. Primm asked to be allowed to go to his store and close it. He
remained inside longer than Pitts expected and when Pitts went in after him, it is
claimed that Primm sprang at him with a large butcher knife. Cut off from the door
and cornered Pitts drew his revolver and fired one shot which killed Primm.
Jan.31,1913--continued--Milan.TN.,Jan.30--Hiram Benson,a well known young farmer 34
years of age,died here yesterday of pneumonia. He is survived by his aged parents,of
which he was the support. Interment today at Mt.Zion Cem.
Milan,TN.,Jan.27-News was received of the death of Erb Ward last night at his
father's home at Bradford of cerebro-spinal meningitis. He had recently returned from
the lower counties of the infected district near the Miss. River. He was about 27
years old.
Trezevant,TN.,Jan.27--The remains of Martin Newbill,aged 23,were brought to this
place from Bolivar and interred by the side of his sister, Miss Brooksie Newbill, who
died only a short time ago in the Trezevant Cem. He died of the effects of pellagra
as did his sister. He was the son of Dr. & Mrs.Tom Newbill of the Newbill Schoolhouse
Community.
Milan,TN.,Jan.30--Robert McLemore, aged about 68 years, died yesterday of pneumonia
at the home of S.H. Hughes near here .He was a Confederate soldier. He is survived by
two sisters, Mrs.Thomas Manning of Lavinia & Mrs.Fry of Cedar Grove,TN.
Milan,TN.,Jan.27.--News reached here today of the death of William Altman,aged 81
years,at Nashville,TN.,of heart failure.He was formerly from here,an old Confederate
soldier.He is survived by a daughter,Mrs.Geo.R.Cook,of this vicinity;three
sons,Dr.Jno.T.Altman of Nashville,James Altman of Ar. and Nat Altman of this
section;one brother,Wiley Altman of Cades.Burial in Oak Grove Cem.near here.
Milan,TN.,Jan.29--John T.Tucker,aged 84,died at his home this morning of pneumonia. He
is survived by one son, Dr.Carl Tucker of Memphis. He was a Confederate
soldier. Interment in Oakwood Cem.
Trezevant,TN.,Jan.27--Esq.Henry Ross of the Pilgrim's Rest Community in the edge of
Weakly County is dead of Meningitis. Burial in the Pilgrim's Rest Burying ground.
New Hope News----The baby girl of Mr.& Mrs.Will Marcom died Sat.of pneumonia,burial
at Cypress Church Sunday.
In Memory Of----Mrs.James T.Perry--On the night of Jan.5th,1913,God in His
Wisdom,called her home.She was 68 years of age.She was married 47 years ago to her
husband,who now in his 80th year survives her.
Weeks Doings of Medina People----Mr.& Mrs.W. Egbert Askew have the deep sympathy of
friends in the loss of their infant son, William Carter,who died Sunday of pneumonia.

Marriage----John Taylor formerly of Henderson, but now of Pleasant hill, this county
and Mrs.Lula Estes,widow of Geo.Estes,were married in Humboldt Monday.
Milan,TN.,Jan.28----Paul M. Pearce of this city and Miss Lucille Collins, daughter of
E.T. Collins of Fordyce,AR.,were married last night.
In Memory----Mrs. Sarah Ann Loyed departed this life Dec.2nd,1912,at the mature age
of 83 years,7 months and 3 days.She was born in NC.,Apr.9,1829,and married at an
early age to J.A.Loyed,to which were born 8 children,three survive,30 grandchildren
and 47 greatgrandchildren. By her daughter;Lonie Nelson.

received here in Gibson,a gloom of sadness fell over the entire community.
Crockett County News From Alamo---Mr.Joe Straughn,brother of Mrs.J.P.Neal,died Sunday
morning at the home of his brother-in-law,Mr.Mayo,near Maury City,and was buried at
the old Nunn burying ground Monday morning.

Courier-Chronicle Humboldt, TN August 20,1915 The sad news reached Humboldt Monday
that Mr. Clint Seat had died at his home in Medina that day. He was about 48 years
and is survived by his wife. He had no children. Burial at Zion.
Card of Thanks----To our many friends who were so kind during the long days of
illness and the death of our devoted sister and daughter,Audrey---Mrs.W.G.Davis &
children.
The Death Angel entered the home of Mr.& Mrs.John McCoy at Central,and took from them
their little son,Dalton,14 months old.
Little Mildred, infant daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Cliff Lansdell, died August 5th,and was
buried at Rose Hill Cem.
Messers. J.R. Jarrell,C.T.Jarrell,J.D.Senter,J.N.Midyett and A.B. Foust were among
those from here who attended the meeting of the Cotton States Merchants' Association
in Memphis this week.
Medina,TN., August 18.---The funeral services of Miss Rachael Usurla Fly were held
this afternoon at Mt. Zion. She died Saturday of tuberculosis. She was in her 17th
year and is survived by her father, John Fly; a sister, Mrs. Travis of McKenzie; a
brother Prentice of Memphis.
Rutherford, TN., August 18.--- Mrs. Mary E. Howell of Bells Chapel, died at her home
yesterday of blood poisoning. She was 74 years old. She leaves a husband, one son and
two daughters and many relatives, two of whom, a brother and a sister, live near
Gainesville,TX.

Less Dungan, colored, was captured red-handed after breaking into J. N. Midyett's
store on 17th Avenue North Sunday night. Noises were heard in the store by a
neighbor, who went at once for City Marshal Senter and the house breaker was
captured.
Kenton,TN.,August 31.--Joe E.Thomas,local agent for the Fordautomobile,was killed
last night by the overturning of his machine on the Kenton-Rutherford road.He was 33
years of age,the son of J.G.Thomas.
Bells,TN.,Sept.1st.--At her home in Fruitvale on Friday last,Mrs.J.R.Jackson died
after two weeks illness.She is survived by her husband and three children.The remains
were laid to rest at Walnut Hill Cem.
In Memory----Of little Artis Dalton McCoy,He died on Wednesday morning,August morning
August 11th,1915;14 months old.
News From Gadsden----Mr.Ed Welch,s wife died this morning,the 31st.
Mrs.Bob Jackson,of Fruitvale died last Friday and was buried Saturday at Walnut Hill.
Ripley,TN.,August 31.--About 7:30 this morning the fast train south on the Illinois
Central struck Miss Lillie Covington of Brownsville and injured her so severely that
she died within a short time after she was brought to Ripley.The accident occurred at
Flippen,four miles north of this place.Miss Covington was about 15 years of age and
was the daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Gus Covington of Brownsville and niece of B.C.
Covington of this county.
J.J.Reeves,66 years of age, a well known farmer of near Milan,died last Friday of
tuberculosis.
Mr.Jno.A. Cathey, formerly a resident of Humboldt and a merchant here for several
years, died in Memphis Thursday. He leaves his wife and two sons. The remains will be
buried at Brownsville today.
From Salem----Mr.& Mrs.John Tinsley are entertaining a new boy at their home.
Mrs.Joseph Pettijon returned Thursday from Jackson Where she attended the funeral of
Miss Will Spencer.
Born to Mr.& Mrs. Jno.Hazelwood of Gibson,an eleven pound boy.

Local News---Mrs.L.W. Slayden,who was here during the illness and death of her
brother,Mr.R.S.Jones, has returned to Waverly. He died Sept.1st.
Mrs.A.B.Jones,wife of Rev.Jones,pastor of the M.E.Church died Thursday,September 2nd.
The wedding of Miss Eva Belle Johnston & Mr.A.F.Bourne was solemnized Wednesday at
The First Presbyterian Church.
COVINGTON,TN.,Sept.--The dead body of Thomas Goforth,12 years old son of Mrs.Venie
Norman, was found Saturday by his step-father,C.N. Norman,lying under a wild
grapevine in a clump of trees about half a mile from the family residence,on the Joe
Trotter Farm, a mile west of Gilt Edge,in this county. The lad had been shot in the
head with a shotgun and killed. There is no clew as to the identity of the person who
shot him.
Local Happenings About Town-- Bessie, the 12 year old daughter of Mr. Tib Fisher,
died at the family home in Humboldt Wednesday of malarial fever.The remains were
buried at Rose Hill. Her mother died some two years ago. She leaves two brothers;
Tiance & Otis.
A.J. Allen & Mrs. Rebecca Williams were married at the home of the bride near Milan
Monday.The groom is said to be 78 years and the bride in her sixties.
CHATTANOOGNA,TN.,Sept.7--Reports from a moonshining section of Monroe County, state
that the killing of Dock Thomas By James Bivens followered charges made by Bivens
that Thomas had" turned up"a still to revenue officiers.Bivens is in jail.
LEXINGTON,TN.,Sept.7--Yesterday morning near Luray,A horse ran away in which were
riding Mrs. Richard Allen & Miss Bertha Adcock, The ladies were thrown out and Mrs.
Allen received injuries from which she died two hours later. She is survived by her
husband and five of his children besides Mitchell Gibson,a Lexington Jeweler, a child
of the first marriage.
LEXINGTON,TN.,Sept.7--Last night about 8 p.m.at Darden,about 12 miles east of
Lexington,Arless Owens,aged 28,unmarried was assassinated by unknown persons,being
shot twice.He was a son of Alfred Owens.He was a nephew of R.S. Owens and a cousin of
Esco Derryberry, also of Lexington.

Announcements were received at Humboldt announcing the marriage of Senter Wilsin
Rainey and Miss Ethel Ferguson, daughter of Mr.& Mrs.O.C. Ferguson, of
Caruthersville, MO.,in Caruthersville on August 15th.
Wednesday evening at the beautiful country home of Mr.Geo.T.Jackson, their daughter,
Roberta was united in marriage to Homer Tatum of Maury City. Mr.& Mrs. Lawson Estes
are Delighted on account of the arrival of a pretty little girl in their home in
Gibson.
In Loving Memory of Mrs. Edd Welch---Last Monday morning at 5 a.m. the Death Angel
visited the home of Edd Welch and took away his beloved wife. She had been sick of
fever about five weeks. The remains were laid to rest at Rose Hill.--A Friend.
Lewisburg, TN.,Sept.8.--Miss Clara Malone, aged 30 years, died at her home near
Mooresville yesterday evening, the results of wounds that she inflicted upon herself
Sunday with a razor.
Clarksville, TN.,Sept.8.--While in bathing at Gills racetrack, Perry Chandler, age 15
years, was drowned Tuesday afternoon.

Interesting News From Gibson--Tuesday Alvin Summers & pearl Dees drove to Trenton and
were married.
Dave Howell,46,died at his home in Greenwood,MS.,Monday.He was an old Gibson boy and
leaves two brothers; Moses & Alex Howell, and six sisters; Mrs.Morris, Mrs.Karnes,
Mrs.Parr, Mrs.Dedmon, Mrs.Barker, and Miss Tommie Howell, besides his wife.
Monday at 1 a.m. the Death Angel entered the home and took the spirit of Uncle Billie
Foust to its eternal home.He was 84 years old,a mason,an ex-Confederate soldier.He
leaves a wife and nine children,besides a large number of grandchildren to mourn his
death.Besides his immediate family,he leaves three sisters,Mrs.Palmer,Mrs.Alexander
and Mrs.Hedgecock,the youngest sister being 70 years old.
Alexanderia,TN.,Sept.15--Two children of Joe Hughes,who lives about two miles south
of town,were drowned late Tuesday,They were aged 2 years and 5 years.
Clarksville,Tn.Sept.13--Dr.J.A.Lyons,63,professor of science in Southwestern
Presbyterian University ended his life here Sunday.A shotgun was used.
Chattanooga,TN.,Sept.12--H.J.Bowen,a molder went to the parish house of Saints Peter
& Paul Cathedral here today and told Father Sullivan that he had beaten Mrs.Bowen
into insensibility with a gas pipe when,upon his return from Mass and found another
man with her in their apartment.They found Mrs.Bowen lying in a pool of blood,her
head crushed.She is not expected to live.Bowen is in jail.
Harris Grove News-- Mr.& Mrs.Bob White are rejoicing over the arrival of a new son.
Route 10;Crockett County--Mrs.J.F.Brasfield died at her home on Route 9 last
Friday,Sept.10th.Interment in Center Cemetery.
Out Of Town Deaths--Gibson,TN.,Sept.13--Wm.Foust,84,died this morning.He is survived
by his widow;two daughters, Mrs.G.G.Manley & Mrs.W.O.Meredith of Gibson; and seven
sons; H.J.,J.F.,E.E.,J.K.,H.C., & W.H.of Gibson and Jake of Eaton;three
sisters;Mesdames Alexander, Hedgecock & Palmer.Burial in Double Springs Cemetery. He
married Miss Sallie Palmer December 1854.He was born April 12,1832.

Mabel Freeman Luckey--went to sleep at her home in Jackson,TN,August 23rd,1915,after
an illness of several days duration-the last long quiet sleep succeeding earthly
life. She was born in Lauderdale County,near Ripley,just 27 years and 2 days
preceeding her death.She was the daughter of Orran H.& Sarah E.Freeman.Her father
died when she was three years old, she with her mother and brother came to Gibson
,where she lived until five years ago,when she married Dr.Wm.Lucky and moved to
Jackson.To this Married life,two sons were born,one who died in infancy and the
other,Carl remains with his father.----By her aunt--Julia Nicholson Farrow.
Crockett County News From Alamo---The Stork visited the home of Mr.& Mrs.Walter
Conley last week and left a cute little man to love and be loved.
Mr.Lattimer of Chattanooga,is visiting P.B.Nance and family & also J.F.Robertson of
Crockett Mills.He was accompanied by a Mr.Mitchell,a blind man,who died suddenly in
Crockett Mills yesterday.
Jackson,TN.,Sept.21---Early Sunday morning in their home near Medina,this
county,Oscar Newsom,colored,was shot and killed by his wife.He had gone home
drunk,threatened the life of his wife Sat.night and again Sunday,he was slower than
the wife getting his gun,she shot him three times,killing him.The verdict of the jury
was that the negress acted in self defense.
Memphis,TN.,Sept.20---With the body of her husband on its way to the grave,efforts
today by Mrs.German Hudson to get to the bedside of J.S.McCauley,who was seriously
wounded when he shot and killed Hudson,proved fatal.Attaches of St.Joseph's hospital
have deined her admission to the room of her husband's killer.In a dark room Hudson
and McCauly fought a pistol duel Saturday night.Both were seriously wounded and
Hudson died several hours later.The Tragedy occurred,the police say,when Hudson found
his wife with McCauly on Walnut Street.Relatives of her husband sent his body to
Middleton,TN.,today for burial.
September 24,1915 issue continued---
Local Happenings In And About Town---News came from Stockton,Calif.,of the death in
that city on Sept.11th of Mrs.Hannah Stilwell Hughes.She was reared in Humboldt,and
was the daughter of the late Dr.Wm.H.Stilwell.Several years ago she was united in
marriage to Mr.Louis Hughes ,of Dyersburg,and spent several years of her married life
in that town.Mr.Hughes died some years ago and for the past 15 years,she and her
daughter,Mary,have lived in Stockton.
Knoxville,TN.,Sept.20--T.B.Brown,an employee of the Zinc Company at Mascot,was struck
and killed by a Southern passenger train at Mascot today.He was standing on one track
watching a freight train go by when hit.He was 36 years old and leaves a widow and
six children.
Society---A pretty wedding was solmnized at the home of the bride's parents
Wednesday,when Ruby Marguerite Bevill became the bride of L.Garland Frye.
Dr.T.H.King and Mrs.Eddie Sloan of this city were married in Jackson Wednesday.
Born to Mr.& Mrs.Emerson Duffey on Thursday,the 21st,a girl.

Jno.D.Gullett,a former well-known citizen of Humboldt,but for several years a
resident of Memphis,died at his home in the latter city.The remains were brought to
Humboldt Monday,and after services at the Cumberland Church,burial was in Rose Hill
Cemetery.He is survived by his wife:three sons,Leon,Will & Harry;one
daughter,Mrs.Dora Ellis.
Neiman Booth of Crockett County was found guilty of highway robbery and sentenced to
15 years in the pententiary.
Tullahoma,TN.,Sept.26---While crossing the branch railroad track to the
station,Beulah,15 year old daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Ewing Holt,was run over Saturday by a
branch train which was backing past the station and was so fearfully injured that
death resulted two hours later.Interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
Society---On Sunday afternoon,Sept.26th,Monroe Karnes and Bessie McGill were married.
Born to Mr.& Mrs.W.O.Gray on the 25th,a daughter.
Knoxville,TN.,Sept.24---LaFayette Norton,of Lenior City,was killed,his
daughter,Ella,seriously ,and his daughter-in-law,Mrs.Frank Norton,painfully injured
in an automobile accident at Pine Mountain.
In Memory Of---George W.Coleman was born April 26th,1857,and departed this life
Thursday at 11:45 p.m.,Sept.23rd,1915,at the age of 58 years 4 months and 27 days.He
was married to Miss Katherine Jacobs,Feb.4th,1880,and to this union 11 children were
born,10 of whom survive him.

Local news---Sarah Elizabeth Moore,the beautiful little 16 months old daughter of
Mr.& Mrs.J.M.Moore,died early Monday.Funeral services were Wednesday at the Oakland
Cemetery.
Mr.W.D.Waddell and Mrs.Alice A.Andrews were united in marriage Sunday.
Clark Moore was called home from Earle,AR.,Monday on account of the death of his
little sister,Sarah Elizabeth.
Mr.& Mrs.T.K.Happel will attend the marriage of their brother,Dr.Horace E.Happel to
Miss Elizabeth Drew,which will take place in St.Louis on the 16th.
An hour after the close of the Tri-County Fair,which had passed without the slightest
untoward incident to mar its features,Dr.J.J.Pratt was accidently killed by a falling
tent pole.He was carried to the home of his cousin,John McAlister,where he died.The
remains were taken to McKenzie for burial.
Crockett County News From Alamo---Mrs.Lois Permenter and little daughter,Dorothy of
Jackson,are visiting relatives here this weekend
Mr.& Mrs.Ed Smothers were rejoicing over the arrival of a wee man who made his

Local News---Mrs.Reubin Seay of Nashville,has been called home on account of the
death of her brother,Elbert Phelan.
Roy Glisson of Rutherford,TN,and Estella Chappin of Cape Girardeau,MO.,were married
Monday afternoon at the residence of the groom's sister,Mrs.Thomas Bennett.
Elbert Phelan,a prominent farmer and business man,died at his home in this city
Friday morning.The funeral was held at the residence Saturday,burial at Salem.He is
survived by his wife,two children:his parents,the D.F.Phelans;his sister,Mrs.R.Seay
of Nashville and his brother,Harry Phelan of this place.
Mr.D.G.Bradley and Miss Bena Crenshaw were married last Thursday evening at the
Methodist parsonage.
Dr.G.W.James Dies Very Suddenly---He died Thursday about 11 a.m. of
heartfailure.Deceased is survived by six sons and daughters,four of his first
marriage and two by his second.They are:Mrs.Clyde Hamilton,Mrs.E.R.Wilson,Warren
James,Henry James,Miss Emma James and Pike H.James.His wife died last December.In the
death of Dr.James,Humboldt loses a good citizen and a valuable one.
Crockett County News From Alamo: Mrs.Perry,of Chestnut Bluff,mother of our
fellowtownsman,John Perry,died Tuesday.
Social Happenings In & About Town--Mr.Henry James of Gleason was called to Humboldt
by the death of his father,Dr.James.
Walter Williams of Paducah,KY.,is home to attend the funeral of Dr.James.
Mary Alice,the 13 months old baby of Mr.& Mrs.Roy Toombs,died very suddenly Wednesday
afternoon,Oct.12th of acute indigestion.The remains were buried at Zion graveyard on
Thursday.
Interesting News From Gibson--Oct.7th--Since our last,the home of Mrs.Sallie
Lessenberry was destroyed by fire,together with its contents,including the smoke-
house and contents.The loss falls heavy on her as she had only a small amount of
insurance.The ladies of the community met at Mrs.W.B.Maley's Monday and gave her a
miscellanoues shower.

The stork visited the home of J.P.Warmath and wife last week and left a fine baby
girl.
Aunt Sophie Hill died suddenly Monday night of heartfailure.She was 82 years old.The
funeral service was conducted at the residence by Rev.J.F.Parker,after which the body

daughter-in-law,Mrs.Altie Foust.She was the widow of Elijah Foust,who was captured
during the Civil War by Federal soldiers and died in an Ohio prison.She leaves two
sons,R.E.Foust,wellknown farmer of the 18th District,and Billy Fourt of Henry
County.The funeral services were at the C.P.Church after which the body was laid to
rest in Double Springs Cemetery.
The little afflicted son of Mr.& Mrs.G.J.Blankinship,aged 14 months,died Sunday
evening.Services were conducted at the residence,the little body laid to rest Monday
in White Rose Cemetery.
Mrs.G.J.Carman was called to Bethal Springs Monday to attend the funeral of her
father,Uncle Roddie Hendrix,aged 94 years.He leaves a large family of
children,grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.

citizens,died at Tiptonville Monday.The remains were interred at Union City
Wednesday.He was about 70 years old and leaves his wife and two sons;Judge Vance
Custer and Charles J.Custer;one daughter,Miss Winnie Custer;one sister,Mrs.Salisbury.
Crockett County News From Alamo--Filbert Jelks,an old and well to do colored man,died
Wednesday afternoon,after a long illness of cancer and was buried at Harris Chapel
Thursday.--Also a son of Mollie Thompson was buried there the same day.
Mr.Sam Haddard died at Mr.Jones 'in Cairo neighborhood Tuesday morning and his
remains carried to Fulton,KY for burial.He came from Jerusalem six years ago.

Dresden,TN.,October 19.--News reached Dresden Monday afternoon of a killing occurring
several miles west of Greenfield, in the extreme southwest portion of Weakley County,
in which Joe Ward was cut to death by Smith Abernathy,the latter using a pocket
knife. Abernathy is a man over 60 years of age.
The Dead---J.M. Wortham died at his home in northeast Humboldt Saturday afternoon,and
his remains were buried in the 25th District Sunday.Deceased was nearly 80 years of
age, and leaves several sons and daughters,of whomMrs.G.W.Gill of this city is one.
His wife preceded him to the grave only by a few months.
More on the death of Charles J. Custer---His daughter was Mrs.Winnie Custer
Alexander,wife of Richard Alexander of this city.Mr. Custer was born Feb.27th,1844 at
Troy,MO., being the eldest son and fifth born child of Joseph Custer of Rockingham
Co.VA., his father died in 1868,his mother lived to the age 90.On May 22nd,1878,Miss
Ella, daughter of Judge W.R. Vance became his wife. She was born July 8th,1848,and
died March 20th,1883,leaving two son, Charles Jr., and Vance. On April 20th,1886,he
was married to Miss Sallie T., daughter of Rev. Thomas Hall. She died a few years
later and left him with one daughter, Winnie.A few years later Mr. Custer we3dded
Miss Pattie Nolen of Brownsville and she was with him when the end came. Interment
was at East View.

the funeral of her little daughter Monday.
Mr.Jess Branch of Humboldt,attended the funeral of his little neice Monday,as also

State News Boiled Down--Relatives of James C.Crowell who,with Miss Margaret Favor,was
murdered in the Benham Flats in Memphis sometime ago,will co-operate with the police
in following clues.Larkin Flannigan & Waddell Field,who were held at Jackson,MO.,are
suspected of the murders.
The Dead--Mrs.Claytie Cooley was born Dec.8th,1888.She departed this life
Oct.29th,1915 at 10 a.m.,being in her 26th year.She was united in marriage to Mr.Alex
Cooley in Sept.,1908;and to this happy union two children were born,one of which
preceded her to the grave.About two years ago Mrs.Cooley was stricken with
paralysis,and this finally caused her death.Funeral services were conducted at Oak
Grove Church last Saturday.
Mrs.J.C.French died at her home in Morgan MS.,Wednesday,Oct.7th.She was buried in the
family plot at Rose Hill Cemetery,Humboldt,TN.,Oct.28th.She was the daughter of
Mrs.Estelle Edwards of Fruitland.She is survived by her husband,mother,two
brothers,two sisters and two small children,who mourn her death,scarcely more than 21
years of age at the time of her death.Funeral services by Rev.Mason at the cemetery.
The remains of Walter W.Fisher were brought back from Colo.,and buried in Chapel Hill
Cemetery Monday.Rev.Alvin West conducted the services.Deceased is survived by his
wife,one child and several brothers and sisters.He had been in the west for sometime
for his health.
Mrs.Sarah Horn,aged 24,died of peritonitis at her home near Salem,near
Milan,Monday.Her infant,less than two months old,died earlier in the day,and both
bodies were buried in the same casket.She was the wife of John Horn,leaves her
parents,also several brothers and sisters.Burial in Walnut Grove Church yard.

Interesting News From Gibson--Last Thursday night at his home near Trenton,Murrell
Lane died of pneumonia.He was the son of Mr.& Mrs.Thos.Lane of this place,and is
survived by three small sons,his wife having died some seven months ago.He also
leaves two brothers;Hal Lane of Gibson & Neal Lane of Dyersburg;five sisters,Mesdames
Minnie Wood of Jackson,O.M. & C.D.E.Fly,of Gibson,Roy Morgan and Will Sherrod of
Trenton.
Mrs.Mollie Benthal Burns,wife of W.S.Burns,of the 12th District,died Sunday,aged
about 60 years.She leaves her husband and seven children to mourn her death.Burial in
Oak Grove Cemetery.(from another obit,same issue),she was 58 years old and died of
Tuberculosis,after a long illness.
In memory--On Sunday night,Oct.24th,1915,the Death Angel visited the home of Mr.&
Mrs.W.T.Keenan,claiming for its victim their beloved daughter,Cynthia.She had been
sick for three weeks with typhoid fever.She was about 18 years of age.Funeral

Mrs.Annie DeBerry,aged 67 years,died Monday.She was the widow of the late Capt.Drew

Eva D.,the two year daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Oscar Thompson,died Monday.The little body
was laid to rest in Hope Hill Cemetery.
Mrs.Pollyna---? Cannon,aged about 75 years,died Wednesday at the home of Mr.John
T.Hale at Trenton.She leaves one son,Thomas Hawkins of Texas,who was with her at the
time of her death. She was a Hatchett before her marriage.She was married first to
Mr.Hawkins,who was killed in the war of the 60's.Her second marriage was to Mr.Carrol
Hunt.Her third marriage was to Mr.Jack Spencer;the fourth and last marriage to
Mr.James Cannon.She was an aunt of Mr.W.E.Hatchett and a great aunt of H.P.Hale of

Mrs.Rollin Clark of Dermont,AR.,and Robert Adams of VA., were called home this week
on account of the critical illness of their father,T.J.Adams.
Mrs.K.C.Gordon,who has been confined in a Memphis hospital for a number of weeks,was
brought home Sunday night.It was hoped she would live sometime after returning
home,but the end came early Tuesday evening.Interment in Oakland Cemetery.
The wedding of Miss Annie Lewis Tyree and Mr.Emmett Wade were solmnized Wednesday

SISTER ACCIDENTLY KILLED BY BROTHER---A most deplorable accident occurred in the 16th
District of Madison County Wednesdat,in which Mrs.Finis Milam lost her life.The
accidental discharge of a pistol which her brother,Dave Bonds was attempting to
unload,caused the wound from which Mrs.Milam died about 11 p.m. Wed.She was about 22
years of age.She is survived by her husband and 3 year old son.The accident occurred
at the home of Wink Bonds,father of Dave Bonds and Mrs.Milam.Interment at Antioch.
CROCKETT COUNTY NEWS FROM ALAMO---Mr.O.E.Howell was all asmiles Saturday morning and
his friends were congratulating him on the arrival of two little gentlemen at his
home Friday night.The mother was quite ill for several days but is now convalescing.
Mrs.Neal McMillen spent the weekend in Bells ,the guest of her daughter,Mrs.Jim
Midyett.

The 6 year-old son of Will Patrick,a farmer residing near Liberty,in Tipton
County,died Sunday from the effects of falling into a pot of boiling water Saturday.
The child was swinging when the rope broke and he fell into the wash boiler.
T.J.Bradshaw,aged 52;a well known cattleman of Dyer County,committed suicide at
Dyersburg Saturday.The rash act was committed in the home of his son.
Willie Chase,14 year-old son of I. A. Chase of Memphis, was shot by a negro gunman
Sunday morning.The boy,with several playmates, was sitting on the curbing of the
street near his home, when the negro came along and the boys made a remark about him.
The negro answered, "I am a bad negro,'and shot into the crowd of boys. Young Chase
was shot in then groin, and is in St. Joseph's Hospital.

Mr.Bedford Forrest Robertson & Miss Alma Sledge were united in marriage at the home

Many hearts were saddened in Bells and throughout Crockett County,when news reached
here that Brother R.P.Meeks had died in a hospital in St.Louis Sunday. His remains
were brought to Humboldt Monday for interment.
Graham Overall,17 year old son of J.W.Overall,died quite suddenly at the home of his
father in Dyer on Tuesday of last week. He had been suffering with a rising in his
head when he died.

LITTLE BABY DIES OF INJURIES---Brunnelle,the 14 months-old daughter of Mr.&
Mrs.Robert Bone,who reside just northwest of Humboldt,was scalded Tuesday and died as
a result of these injuries Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock.The grandmother of the
little one had scalded a chicken preparatory to dressing it,and left a dishpan of hot

was spilled on the child and it was also hurt bt thte fall. Death came to the relief
of the little sufferer Wednesday morning

her mother,Mrs.Stewart died.
Mr.& Mrs.John Thomas Warmath have announced the marriage on Wednesday evening,May
10th,of their daughter,Hallie,to Mr.Rice Pierce Adams.
RURAL ROUTE NO.10---Mr.& Mrs.Eddie Eaves are the happy parents of a little girl left
them by the Stork a few days since.
Mrs.Cullen Call was buried at Center last Thursday.She had been suffering from blood
poisoning for some time.A husband and three little children are left with many
friends to mourn her departure.
THE DEAD---CALDWELL--The remains of Mr.Sim Caldwell,who died in Memphis,were brought
to the home of his sister,Mrs.H.B.Gillespie,Tuesday afternoon,and kept until
Wednesday morning,when they were carried to Trenton and interred in the family lot in
Oakland Cemetery.Mr.Caldwell was about 55 years of age and is survived by his
wife,one son,one daughter;one brother,S.P.Caldwell of Trenton;two
sisters,Mrs.Gillespie of this city and Mrs.Ewing of Paris.
STEWART--Mrs.Maggie Stewart,aged 79 years,died Monday evening at the home of Ed Lusk
in Milan.She is survived by one daughter;Mrs.Fannie Casey of Gibson;two sons,T.H. &
W.T.Stewart,both of Milan;and a number of grandchildren.Interment in Oakwood
Cemetery.
WOOD--Mrs.Amanda Wood,aged 64 years,died Thursday night of infirmities incidental to
old age,at the home of B.J.Mayo of Milan.She is survived by one sister;Mrs.McCollum
of Huntingdon,TN.,and several neices & nephews,among whom are Mrs.Tennie Mayo and
Esq.F.L.Mayo of Milan.Interment in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
COURTNEY--Anthony Courtney,about 45 years of age,died Sunday morning at his
home,seven miles east of Milan of heart failure.He was a dwarf from childhood and
never married.He leaves one sister;Mrs.Smith Barger of Hopewell;three brothers,George

DRUGGIST SUICIDES BY TAKING POISON---Clyde Bone.druggist of Yorkville,committed
suicide Sunday night in the Old Cemetery at that place.At the time of taking the
fatal step,his wife,who had returned from a visit in Jackson,was a guest in the home
of her sister,Mrs.O.E.Moberg of Dyer.Late in the night they were notified of the
death.An inquest was held and a verdict rendered stating that the deceased came to
his death by drinking a mixture of poisonous drugs.He told his daughter he was going
for a walk.When his son came home the search was started for his father.

THOMAS B.MANNING,77 years,died suddenly from heart failure at his home,seven miles

INTERESTING NEWS FROM GIBSON---Last Sunday, just after preaching at the
M.E.Church,Mr.J.W.Wilkinson & Miss Annie Mai Lee were united in marriage in the
parsonage, Rev.G.J.Carman officiating. The happy couple left for the home of the
bride's uncle, Charles Turpin, where a reception was tendered them.

died at Bristol Monday as the result of a blow received on the head by a brickbat at
the hands of Henderson McNutt. Both were boys of about 19 years of age.
Dr.W.L.Tadlock,41,of Talbott's near Morristown,and his nephew,Hubert
Deatherage,25,living at Harriman were killed,and Mrs.Talbot,35,fatally injured Monday
night when their auto was struck by the Carolina Special,a Southern Railway fast
train.
The body of J.P.Dolan,who was drowned in the Tennessee River at Jacksonville
Friday,where he was working on thr bridge of the Nashville,Chatanooga & St.Louis
Railway,was recovered early Monday and sent to his home at McEwen,TN.
The body of Arlo Green was discovered in an old well near Cassville a few days
ago.Young Green disappeared April 29th.A well-known citizen and a negro were
arrested.
As a result of a pistol wound,accidently inflicted Sunday morning,Miss Hester
Scott,aged 20,daughter of John Scott was killed in her home 10 miles south of
Lexington.Silas Little,son of John Little was with her when the accident occurred.

THE DEAD---Mrs.Lucretia Cox died at her home on Main Street & 17th Avenue,Sunday
afternoon at 2:50,after a long illness,and the remains were buried in Rose Hill
Cemetery Monday morning.She was the widow of M.T.Cox,who died some years ago,and is
survived by two sons,Messrs.Fred & Will Cox;one daughter,Mrs.W.A.Senter.She was about
65 years of age.
MRS.JANE BETHSHARES died at her home in this city on Wednesday night at 8:30,after
three weeks illness.Shw was in her 74th year and is survived by one
son,T.B.Bethshares and one daughter,Mrs.John M.Ray of Memphis.Her husband died a
number of years ago.Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

DEATH---W.T.WINSTEAD,who resided with his family on Fork Hill,was run over and killed
by the north bound local freight on the M.& O.railroad while it was switching in the
Yard Monday morning.He was 60 years of age and is survived by his wife and six
children.
DEATH---MRS.LYDE COTTON died at her residence in Dyersburg Monday.She was 74 years
old,related to several families in Humboldt.She was born in Rutherford County and
moved to Dyersburg in 1873 when she married Thomas Cotton.She leaves her
daughter,Nell Cotton,her two sons,Harry & Dan Cotton.Mr.N.M.Stewart attended. the
funeral.
DEATH---CURTIS STEPHENSON,about 22 years of age ,was killed Sunday morning when he
fell between the cars of an Illinois Central train.He caught the train intending to go to Medina.
NEWS AMONG OUR NEIGHBORS--- MRS. EMMA HARRISON BLOCK and MRS.MARY GAUGH,both well-known ladies of Jackson,died at their homes in that city,Saturday morning.Mrs.Block
was 71 years old and Mrs.Gaugh was 58.
Mr.& Mrs.Victor R.Kernodle of the 12th District lost her 5 year-old son,Glen,on
Friday,June 2nd.The remains were buried at Concord Church on Saturday.
MRS.HIGHT,aged 87,died at her home in Milan on Thursday of last week.The remains were
buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Milan.
MRS.HATTIE CARTER died last week at the home of her nephew,Hardy Martin at Milan.She
was 75.Burial in Carter's graveyard.
TULUS ROGERS,a citizen of the section just north of Trenton,died on Wednesday of last
week.Burial in Grier's Chapel graveyard.He leaves his wife and four children.
Two houses, the residences of Sam Wood & J.S.Clark,east of Trenton,were blown to
pieces by the big storm on Monday night of last week,no one was hurt.
NEWS FROM SALEM---The Death Angel visited the home of Mr.George Todd,and claimed for
it's victim,Mrs.Todd's mother,Mrs.Marshall,who had been suffering for a long time.
WEEKS DOINGS OF MEDINA PEOPLE---Rev.Alvin West,of Jackson,conducted the funeral
service of Mr.Curtis Stephenson Monday afternoon at Hopewell Tabernacle.He leaves a
brother and two sisters.
The death of MR.JOE J.PARRISH, which occurred Tuesday evening after an illness of
several months, removes one of the oldest citizens of Medina. He was in his 83
year. Interment at Hope Hill Cemetery.
Mr.CLAY BARNES, a farmer living east of Medina on the Spring Creek Road,died Wednesday
morning of paralysis. Burial in Hope Hill Cem. He is survived by his wife ,two
daughters and one son.
