Photographs

Photographs answer questions text cannot: what a school looked like, who stood beside whom, which building a business occupied. Many of these images were annotated by the person who contributed them, with names written in beside the faces they could still identify. Those annotations are reproduced here as given.

Groups dominate the collection, including school classes, church classes, reunions and workplaces. Identifications are only as good as a contributor's memory, so an unnamed face is genuinely unknown rather than withheld. Dates are approximate wherever the original carried none. A group shot is often worth more than a portrait, because it fixes several families in one place at once.
