Location: 18 Double Springs Road, Humboldt, Tennessee (Highway 70 East, outside Gibson, Tennessee)
History: The history of Double Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church is very limited due to fire that has destroyed the church three times since the 1900s. The brief history below was handwritten about forty years ago by one of the elderly in the congregation. It was given to Richard Lloyd Oliver by Pastor Terry Hansen, passed on to Jackie Isbell Johnston who subsequently gave it to me.
Double Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church was organized in 1840 in the home of Zeddie Oliver. Ike Gunter gave a strip of land on which flowed two springs two miles east of Gibson, Tennessee. A small log church was built on this land in 1841 and was called Double Springs. Candles gave light for evening services and a tuning fork provided the "pitch" for congregational singing. The pews were wooden benches without backs. In 1864 the log building was torn down and a boxed building erected. A tabernacle was built in the same year for revival
meetings.
Members and visitors from all over Gibson County gathered on the church grounds the first two weeks in August for the annual "camp meeting". They came in wagons and buggies with provisions and pitched their tents. The camp meeting was the highlight of the year, and on occasions, as many as five thousand attended these services.
