The Goodman Cemetery
of the Whiteway Community, Gibson County, Tennessee
*DIRECTIONS*
To reach the secluded Goodman Cemetery from Milan, head north on Hwy. 45 going toward Bradford. When you get to the Cades community, turn right onto the Cades-Atwood Road.
Travel down this road 1.7 miles and the cemetery is off to the right. It is NOT visible, so you will probably pass it the first time. There is a small gravel road leading up to the cemetery.
At present, there is a green, tractor mailbox for the house across the road which is beside the driveway to Goodman Cemetery.
*SOME HISTORY*
The Goodman Cemetery is a small, well-kept, no-longer-in-use burial ground. This cemetery has only one tombstone left in tact. Others have been stolen, buried, or just disposed of. When
approaching the cemetery, one would notice the row of white Military Markers placed near the front of the cemetery and a Confederate Battle Flag still flies there. currently
maintains the cemetery.

The one headstone that remains is that of Deliah Goodman:
Goodman, Deliah P. b. July 10, 1809 d. Dec. 7, 1859
Wife of F. G. Goodman
Aged 50 Ys. 4 Ms. 27 Ds.
Deliah was Deliah Woodson before marriage. After her death, her husband Fielding married Nancy Hannah Robinson and the two
are buried at Walnut Grove Methodist Church Cemetery north of Goodman Cemetery. Deliah's name was pronounced "Delila," but
on the stone, it was spelled "Deliah."
Also buried here, but not at unmarked graves without a tombstone, are William
Goodman and his first wife. William Goodman's 2nd wife, Anna Hardister is buried in Arkansas. Also, a couple of William Goodman's sons are buried here. Some say they were killed in the War Between the States. Also, four Civil War soldiers were buried here and at one time had portable military markers, but someone disposed of them. Jere Cox's mother told him that there was slave buried here with "elephant ears." He didn't really know what that meant, unless it just meant a slave who had large ears.
In the front of the cemetery, there is a wooden cross, probably marking a grave. Toward the back, there are three wooden crosses. There is a pattern of rocks which surrounds an old grave in the back of the cemetery (see photo below), which is rumored to be an Indian grave. There are several graves in this cemetery which are marked only by rough, jagged rocks, and some which are only marked by the sunken ground.
Below is a list of the 35 Military Memorial Markers at this cemetery.

They were just placed here by Jere Cox and his son Brent to honor
a few veterans of the Civil War.)
