PLEASANT GREEN (CAMPGROUND) CEMETERY

Go east from Bradford toward Trezevant on Hwy. 105. Travel approximately 7.5 miles and turn right onto Idlewild- Holly Leaf Rd. You will find Pleasant Green Cemetery approximately 1 mile on your left.
There is a small Cumberland Presbyterian Church on a hill past the cemetery named Pleasant Green. The cemetery got listed in formal records by that name, even though it is a community cemetery with maintenance funded by private gifts, rather than funded by the church.
Most local folks know this cemetery as "Campground" (shortened from "Cribbs' Camp Ground"). In the early settlement of this area, it was
customary to come together after the crops were "layed by" awaiting harvest and have revival meetings. The people came some distance in
wagons and on horseback and camped for 1-2 weeks in this general area. They visited, cooked, played and had preaching and song services.
There is a large open field between the present cemetery and the church. The exact location of the camping grounds is unknown. It may literally
be on the cemetery site or in that field.
Pleasant Green Cumberland Presbyterian Church still hosts a "Homecoming" on the first Sunday of May each year. It remains the tradition to treat
the Saturday prior to the first Sunday as a "Decoration Day" at the cemetery. Many families bring fresh flowers to honor their loved ones
and visit with each other.
Before grave-opening was done with mechanical devices, the men-folk of the community were summoned for grave diggings by the tolling of a bell
in the cemetery. A new bell tower was erected in 1945. Headstone information for this list compiled by:
