The History of Dyer County, Tennessee

Dyer County was established by a private act of the Tennessee legislature on October 16, 1823, carved from land previously recognized as Chickasaw territory. The county was named for Robert Henry Dyer, an officer in the Creek War and the War of 1812 who also served as a cavalry colonel in the First Seminole War of 1818 before becoming a state senator. Dyer played a direct role in organizing the new county.

The county seat, Dyersburg, was founded soon after. John McIver and Joel H. Dyer donated sixty acres at a site called McIver's Bluff for the town, which Joel Dyer surveyed into eighty-six lots in 1825. The first courthouse was built on the town square in 1827 and became the anchor of Dyer County civic life for the century that followed.
