The Hampton Family History of Gibson and Carroll Counties

The Hampton Family of Carroll and Gibson Counties

descended from Scotland. There is much speculation on the

Andrew Hamptons of North Carolina, but as far as I can tell,

this line is from Captain Andrew Hampton of Granville North

Carolina and not the Colonel Andrew although they were

probably related.

The father of the Granville Andrew has not been

established although some think it is Andrew Sr of Monmouth

Co NJ. This Andrew is the son of John Hamton who came over

to the states in 1683 from Scotland on the ship Exchange.

John was a Quaker and was married several times. Andrew's

mother was Martha Brown. Andrew Sr married a Susannah (last

name not known). He died in Cecil Maryland. This has not

been confirmed as the father and grandfather of the Andrew

of Granville, but just as speculation at this time.

Andrew of Granville NC was born in 1713. He married

Sara ? abt 1734. Andrew and Sara had 7 children (not

confirmed).

1. Ezekiel Hampton b 1735 d 1811- was constable of

Granville in 1761

2. Ephraim Hampton b 1737 d 1814- Listed as a Captain on

the 1763 Granville Co Capts, Lts, and Ensigns list under Lt.

John Williams.

3. Micajah Hampton b 1738

4. Zachariah Hampton b between 1740 and 1745 died 9/8/1781

5. John Hampton b abt 1745

6. Joseph Hampton b 1746 d 1803

According to the many land deeds, bonds, tax lists and

licenses issued to Andrew, he lived in Va, North Carolina,

and Georgia.

Deeds in Virginia

1. MARCH 3, 1746: Andrew Hampton and wife Sarah show in

Lunenburg County, Virginia Deed Book as transferring land by

sale to Field Jefferson, land next to Ephraim Parham.

Lunenburg formed in 1746 from Brunswick County, Virginia.

The Lunenburg Court ordered two Justices to go to Sarah

Hampton to get her acknowledgement to the sale because,

"Sarah the wife of said Andrew Hampton, cannot conveniently

travel to our county court of Lunenburg to make

acknowledgement of the said conveyance."

2. 10/3/1734- Va land records shows Andrew as a joint

patentee with Benjamin Borden and David Griffith for a grant

of 1122 acres west of the Sherrando River in the area to

become part of Orange Co. South side of Bullskin Run and

Bullskin Marsh (north of present Berryville, VA)

3.Frederick Co Va --Andrew sells land which had been the

property of John Jr (his brother). There is no deed

transferring this land to Andrew, but in that day it was not

uncommon for relatives to transfer land without deed.

4. 1743 - Andrew of Brunswick Co deeds 200 acres in

Frederick to Benjamin Borden of Frederick.

5. 1740 - Land records show Andrew in Brunswick VA south of

the Roanoke River.

6. 1741 - Bought land in Brunswick from George and Susannah

King (this is the same property he sold in 1746 to Field

Jefferson (uncle of Thomas). Was located on the Roanoke

River where the Great Occaneechee Trading Path crossed the

river. Possible that Andrew ran a ferry there since

Jefferson had a ferry on the property. (Brunswick,

Lunenemburg, and then Mecklenburg Co)

Deeds of Granville NC

1. 1756 - License granted to Andrew Hampton to keep an

"ordinary" on his plantation bought from John Adcock,

wherein he promised to "provide good, wholesome and cleanly

lodging and diet for travelers.

2. 1764--Moved to Ledge of Rocks - granted license for an

ordinary

3. 1751 - received grant for 400 acres in Granville NC on

the Tarr River

4. March 1760 - got 1119 acres in two grants located on

Tarr River and Mill Creek, Oxford vicinity of Granville Co

NC

5. MAY 12, 1761: In Granville County, North Carolina,

Andrew Hampton sold to Edward Nowling (Knowland) 76 acres

north of the Tarr River, part of a Granville grant to

Hampton March 11, 1760

6. 8/16/1761 - Sells 200 acres for 30 pounds current money

to Isaiah Phipps in Granville Co

7. 3/25/1766 Granville Deed Book H pg 279, shows 200 acres

to George Boyer of Granville by Andrew Hampton in the

Province of Georgia.

8. 1/10/1767- deeded 200 acres to son Ezekiel having

obtained the same land on the same date by deed from Henry

McCullock Esq.

9. 9/1/1752- deed transfers 300 acres on Tarr River to

Robert Boyd of Lunenburg Va fr Euphraditus Moore. Andrew

signed this deed as a witness. also were John Adcock and

Jonathan White.

10. 3/4/1755- Andrew got 400 acres on both sides of the

Indian Field Creek from John Adcock. ( Andrew was not shown

as a residence of Granville)

11. 1760 - sold 76 acres

12. 5/8/1765 - Andrew sells land to son John on south side

of the Indian Field Creek in Granville. just south of tract

deeded to Ezekiel.

13. 3/25/ 1766- Andrew of GA sells 200 Acres to Geo Boyer

NC. witness by Ezekiel. The tract had been obtained 11

July 3rd year of George III (1763) by Andrew Hampton of

Granville from Chancey Townsend Esq. of Granville.

When Andrew moved to Georgia it is thought that his son in

law Joseph went with him although there is no proof of a

daughter born to Andrew and Sara.

Georgia Land Grants

1. 1768 - Andrew to Whitehead both of St. George Parish,

GA, deed

2. 1769 - land grant stating that he had lived in GA for 4

years along with his wife and 2 minor children. St George's

Parish GA - Brier Creek

3. 1771 Ga Grant Book - Andrew southeast by a marsh

4. 4/2/1771 - Andrew Hampton granted 300 acres St. David

Parish GA

5. Mid 1760's - Andrew, John, and Joseph Hampton listed in

Early St. George Parrish Land Records in Ga

6. 1760's - Joseph and John ask for land adjoining Hall,

Hudson, Asa, Emanuel, and David Lewis each receiving land

next to one another.

Captain Andrew Hampton was mentioned on the 1754 Granville

Militia Roll under Colonel William Eaton, it shows eight

companies with Hampton commanding Company # 8 with 60 men.

The ensign was his son Ephraim. He must have resigned

before 1763, as his name was not on the 1763 Militia roll.

Andrew's son Zachariah was born between 1740 and 1745 in

Lunenburg VA. In 1769 he married Mary Duran Knowland

daughter of the Edward Knowland that Andrew sold land to in

1761. They had the following children:

1. Nolen Hampton b aft 1771 died 1849 in Carroll Co TN

2. John Hampton

It is speculated that Zachariah went to Georgia with his

father and then returned to the Granville area. He was

first listed as Head of Household in Granville in the 1774

Tax List. But if he was married in 1769 where was his

family until then?

Zachariah took the Oath of Allegiance to the State of North

Carolina on May 30, 1778. He was in the Granville Co NC

Lytle's Company 10th Regiment. In a book "The History of

Old Tyron and Rutherford Counties 1730-1936", by Clarence W

Griffin on page 95 shows that: Hampton, Zacr, PVT time 84

months, 640 acres by warrant # 870 Drawn by John Terrel,

the Heirs of Zachariah Hamptons Widow. He died on Sept 8,

1781 in the " Battle of Eutawville" in South Carolina.

In 1783 Mary remarried to John Wilbourn. She names her sons

Nolen ($1) and John and Noah Hampton son of Nolen in her

will. John Wilbourn's will names stepsons Noah Hampton and

Nolan Hampton.

Sept 11, 1821 Granville Co NC - John Hampton son of Pvt

Zachariah Hampton tr 650 ac to John Terrell witnessed by

Wilbourn F. Hampton (son of the above John) and Wm Clement

John married Kesiah Howell on Aug 9, 1794. As far as I can

tell John stayed in North Carolina. They had the following

children:

1. Robert Hampton

2. Zachariah Hampton

3. Wilbourne LittleJohn Hampton b 1802

Nolan married Winifred Cozart (daug of Anthony Cozart and

Winifred Bumpass) on Mar 30, 1793 in Orange Co NC. Nolan is

listed up to the 1820 North Carolina Census. Nolan must

have lived in Va for a while as two of his children were

born there. The 1880 Gibson county census states that

Joseph's father Thomas Sr's birthplace was VA.

They had the following children:

1. James Hampton b 1795 in Va

2. Thomas Hampton Sr b 1796 in VA

3. ? Hampton Daughter b 1799

4. Noah Hampton b 1802 Orange Co NC

5. Duranna Hampton b 1800 NC d in NC

6. ? Hampton daughter b 1810 NC

7. Elvis S. Hampton b 1812 in Orange co NC d 1870 in

Carroll Co TN

8. Mary Hampton b 1820 in Orange Co NC

The first Hampton's in Carroll Co Tn was listed in the 1830

Carroll Co TN Census. It has been speculated that they

received a land grant through their deceased father's

military service. They were:

1. Nolan Hampton

2. Noah Hampton (son of Nolan)

3. James Hampton (son of Nolan)

4. Thos Hampton (son of Nolan)

James is listed in the Carroll Co Goodspeed History as being

one of the first settlers around the Buena Vista area in

Carroll Co. According to other sources Nolan's other

children all but Duranna came to Carroll Co with him.

Nolan's children and whom they married

1. James married Jane Whitehorn on 8/31/1812 in Orange Co

NC

2. Thomas married Peggy Wall on 8/8/1817 in Orange Co NC

3. Noah married Dawsey Rust on 11/27/1821 in Orange Co NC

4. Duranna marred Chelsey Rust (brother of Dawsey) in

Orange Co NC

5. Elvis married 1st Martha ? in Orange Co NC, 2nd

Elizabeth Brinkley 5/13/1852 in Carroll Co TN

6. Mary married Calvin Jones on 2/12/1847 in Carroll Co TN

It seems that the Hampton family lived in the southern part

of Carroll Co and the Northern edge of Gibson County. Later

some of the Hamptons lived around the Huntington area and

moved to the Skullbone and Bradford areas of Gibson County.

My line continues from Thomas SR. He married Peggy Wall.

They had the following children:

1. James b 1817 in TN married Frannie Brinkley in 1842

He died bef 1898 Carroll Co

2. William b 1819 married Sara Knott (daughter of Alford

Knott) in Gibson Co. Lived in the North Gibson Co area.

3. Joseph Hampton b abt 1818 married 1st Cassandra Ann

Parson Meadows on 5/1/1842, 2nd Elizabeth ? before 1875.

Was living in Gibson Co on the 1850, 1860,  and 1880 census.  More on Joseph’s father later on in this section.

4. Mary b 1822 married John A Cunningham on 12/28/1841 in

Gibson County. Living in the Gibson County area on the 1850 census.

 

5. Thomas Jr b 1825 marred Catherine Parsons on
12/23/1841. Lived in the 13th district of Carroll Co.

I have no proof that the below two are the children of Thomas and Peggy.  I am leaving this information in just in case.  I picked this information up from someone else’s gedcom.  Pls remember there is no proof that  I have found that these two are the children of Thomas and Peggy.
6. Nordin b 1826 married Elizabeth

7. Wiley Hampton b 1828.

 Thomas Sr was living with his daughter Mary and her husband

John Cunningham in Gibson Co by the 1850 Census. They were

in the 17th district. He was not listed on the 1860 census

so it is speculated that he died before then.

Thomas Hampton Jr. married Catherine Parsons daughter of

Henry Parson in Carroll Co, TN. Thomas was a Private in the

7th TN USA Calvary during the Civil War. According to

Catherine Hampton's Pension Application he was captured up

around Ripley TN on 6/19/1863 while on a spying mission and

taken to Richmond Va. He was taken to the Hospital in

Richmond on 11/18/1863, while there he died on 11/22/1863 of

Typhoid Fever.

Catherine never remarried. She was a member of the Mud

Creek Baptist Church in Carroll Co. Catherine filed a

widow's pension application in 1869.

V.J. Parsons states that he saw Capt Parsons when he gave

the order to said Hampton

heard his instructions given him by the Capt which were

as stated above and know that he was captured while thus

acting under the orders of his officers and they are not

7th Tn Cal Volunteers ,

a resident of Carroll co post office Huntingdon, Carroll

Co Tn . Attorney A. M. Hughes, Washington D.C. Rate of

pension $8 a month, commencing June 1869, the date of

completing the original and two dollars a month additional

for each child as follows:

George W. B 3/7/1855, Henriette F. B 11/1/1857, Thomas b

1/13/1860. Claim

completed Nov 2/1871. Cause of Death: Prisoner of War,

Richmond Va, typhoid fever.

Catherine's father mentioned Thomas in his will dated Jan

1844. Catherine was born in 1818 in South Carolina. She

was living in with her daughter Henrietta and her son in law

Anderson Carver in 1880 in Carroll Co. She died in 1886.

Thomas and Catherine had the following children:

1. William Rial b 1843 mar Mary Gately on 2/26/1861

2. Irwin b Nov 1844 in Gibson Co married Frances Wood on

12/26/1864 died 9/18/1931 in Carroll Co Tn

3. Sara Elizabeth b 1846 mar Benjamin Phillips in 1866

died Sept 1880

4. Zachariah T. b 1848 died 1850 in Carroll Co

5. Henry Addison b 2/14/1852

6. George C b mar 1855 married Josephine Springer in 1881

(sister to Henry Addison second wife)

7. Henrietta F b 11/1/1857 married Anderson Carver died

March 1904

8. Thomas b 1/12/1860 and died Jan 1927

All of these children were listed on the 1880 census either

living in Carroll Co or Gibson Co TN except William Rial

Hampton. (cannot find him on any census for the area)

Henry Addison Hampton married Nancy Wood on 7/18/1868 in

Carroll Co TN. Nancy was born in 1847 and died before 1875.

They had one child:

1. Evelina Hampton b 1872

Henry Addison married Margaret Matilda Springer daughter of

William P. Springer and Susan Jane Scott on 8/21/1875.

Margaret was born 9/9/1852 in TN. She died on April 17,

1932. They had the following children;

3. Rebecca Elizabeth b married Enoch Bud Brewer

4. William Gentry b 2/20/1882 in Carroll Co Tn

5. Sudie Adale b 5/23/1894 mar Lee Osco Bridges on

11/27/1910. She died on 2/18/1986.

Henry was known as Add. He died on 2/23/1936 in Carroll Co

Ten. He was buried in the Hampton Cemetery in Huntingdon,

TN

William Gentry married Dovie Brandon b 2/11/1885 daughter

of William Brandon and Elsie Crider on 12/14/1902. William

and Dovie had the following children;

1. William Odis (W. O.) b 4/19/1904 married May Dowland

he died 8/5/1991

2. Adiero Chester b 4/29/1906 married Willie Angie

Hampton died 6/12/1983

3. Hubert Edis Hampton b 3/7/1908 .

William Gentry was my grandfather; he died when my father

was only about 4 months old. A mule kicked him in the

stomach and he died a few days later. He died on 7/1/1908.

He was buried in the Hampton Cemetery in Carroll Co Ma

Dovie remarried in 1910 to Clarence McAlister. They didn't

have any children. She died on 2/5/1966 and is buried in

Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near Skullbone.

Uncle Odis and Aunt May had 3 daughters and 3 sons all of

whom are still living in the Carroll Co and Gibson Co Areas.

Uncle Chess and Aunt Willie had 3 or 4 children all of

except 1 are still living around the area.

Hubert Edis (my father) married 1st Olar Dowland (sister to

May) b 12/11/1909 died of a heart attack on 4/16/1951.

They had one daughter who is still living, and 4

grandchildren.

He married second a Knott (she is still living) and they had

two sons and one daughter, and 7 living grandchildren, 1

deceased, and 2 great grandchildren, who all live in Gibson

Co. Daddy died on January 7, 1977 of a heart attack. Him

and both of his brothers are buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery

near Skullbone TN.

Joseph Hampton son of Thomas and Peggy Hampton, brother to Thomas Jr. Hampton.  This is my husband’s grandmother’s line. 

Joseph Hampton b abt 1817 in Tn.  Married Cassandra Ann Parsons Meadows  on 1/5/1842 in Carroll Co TN.  I do not have his death information.

James and Cassandra had the following children:

There is a Joseph Hampton that married an Elizabeth ?  in 1874 in the Gibson County Marriages records.  On the 1880 census records Joseph is age 63 so the age is right for this to be the same Joseph that was married to Cassandra.  He and Elizabeth was on the 1880 Gibson Co Census dist 17.  I do not if the John listed below is the Joseph jr. listed on the 1850 census.  On the 1860 census there was no mention of Joseph jr. or John.

James F.  Hampton was the first born child of Joseph and Cassandra.  He was born 8/1848 in TN. He married Mary Syliva Mount on 1/31/1867 in Gibson Co. Tn.  Mary was b 8/7/1844 and died 4/3/1929.  James died 6/7/1907.  James and Mary are buried in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Cemetery in the Skullbone Area.  James and Mary had the following children:

Emily F.  b 12/1/1867 married James Fisher

Thomas J.  b 10/22/1869 married Cindi R.  – both are buried at Mt. Pleasant

Robert Huston “Bob”  b 1/22/1873 – married Mollie Grant.  This is Willie Angie Hampton’s parents.  Willie married my uncle Aierole Chester Hampton. 

Kelly Barnes b 3/5/1876 – married Mary ?

Jao W.  b 1/31/1874  was listed on the Hampton Family Bible page in the Gibson Co Genweb as being a child of James and Mary.

Maude U Hampton b 10/27/1877 died 2/24/1906  married George F. Davidson b 1875, died 1937 on 7/10/1896 in Gibson County Tn. Both are buried at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Cemetery.   Maude and George had the following children:

After Maude died in 1906 we find that George and his children were living in Obion County in his mother’s and stepfather’s household.

George remarried and move back to Gibson County.  He married a widow Ozell Sanders sometime before the 1920 Gibson County census.  They are listed on the census as living in dist 17. 

Tommie Davidson b 1/27/1902  died 6/1968 married Ollie B. Robinson/Roberson on 7/20/1924 in Gibson County.  Tommie and Ollie moved to Greenfield TN after they got married.  They are on the Weakly county 1920 Census.  Tommie and Ollie B. had the following children:

Charles Wayne Gammons – b 1959 married first living Newman, second Virginia Hampton ( also a descendant of Thomas and Peggy Wall  Hampton thru their son Thomas Jr.)

Donna Gail Gammons – b 1963 died 1963

Living Gammons ( daugh) – b 1964 married first living Earls, second living Ellison.

 

My husband and I have 2 daughters and soon to be 3 grandsons.  This is the end of my husbands Hampton line.

here. This is my line and my husband’s line. Not everything has been

checked and a lot of it has just been picked up here and
