Thomas Williams Cemetery Located off Walnut Hill Rd. Crockett Co., TN |
A very special thank you to Christi Crawford Partee, who provided this updated transcription, done 18 Apr 1999, and the history of the cemetery. There were some additional names (maiden, first, middle, and nicknames) on the previous inventory, and I have left those on this list, as it may help to further identify some of these people.
Thomas Williams was the founder of Walnut Hill Baptist Church as well as the Thomas Williams cemetery where he, his wife, and many children (and grandchildren) are buried today. It is located about 1/4 mile SE of Walnut Hill Bap. Church off Walnut Hill Rd., behind a house with a shop building and thru the wheat field into a grove of pine trees. It has a wonderful wrought iron gate and scroll saying "Thomas Williams Cemetery" over the gate.
Relationship of some of the people buried in this cemetery, to Christi:
Thomas Williams - my gggg.grandfather
Dilly Ann (Medlin) Williams- my gggg.grandmother
James E. (Edward) Ellington - my gg.grandfather
M.A. (Martha Ann Dawes) Ellington - my gg.grandmother
Ida May (Williams) Ellington (step gg.grandmother, and cousin to me as well)
Walter L. (Lee) Christie - my great-grandfather, 1st husband of Minnie Lee
Ellington-Christie-Norvell who is buried at the Cypress Church Cemetery.
Note; It is said that my ggg.grandmother "Elizabeth Williams-Ellington, born abt. 1815 to Thomas Williams and Dilly Ann Medlin, and who married John Ellington in Madison Co., TN., in 1838 is also buried here, next to her daughter "Mary Dee (Ellington)-Horton" in an unmarked grave. One of the family bibles has her year of death as 1901. Elizabeth is also the mother of James Edward Ellington, & Fleming Wood (F.W.) Ellington, both who are also buried here. To my knowledge, her other children are not buried here.
Thanks to Cristie Sanders Wright, for the tombstone photos!

This additional information comes from Christi Crawford Partee:
Many people do not connect "Walter Lee Christie" as a family member in this cemetery, because they just don't know of it. He was my great-grandfather (and my namesake) and was married to Minnie Lee Ellington from 1898 until the summer of 1903 when he was killed while cutting timber. A large limb broke and struck his head, killing him. His friend "Dave Miller" who was with him, managed to carry him to James E. "Ned" Ellington's home. "Ned" was Minnie Lee's father and the father-in-law of Walter Christie. "Ned" is said to have been very fond of his son-in-law and "fetched" a doctor quickly, who performed surgery right there in "Ned's" house in an attempt to save Walter. He was not successful. I am told that it was James E. "Ned" Ellington who insisted that his favored son-in-law be buried in the cemetery which "Ned's" grandfather "Thomas Williams" founded and which became the primary family cemetery until it filled up.
Walter and Minnie had three children together; Lorene, Walter Veron "Bill" and Virgie Jewel. Lorene was my grandmother and married Frank Porter Crawford. They are buried in Ripley. Walter Vernon "Bill" Christie married Kate Ann Crowe and they are buried at Walnut Hill. Virgie Jewel married Lee Loveless and they are buried at Walnut Hill.
Walter Lee Christie's family were of the Haywood/Madison/Crockett counties area since 1837. His father was William H. Christie, an attorney, commissioned on the bar in Brownsville in the 1880's (Goodspeed history). Walter's grandfather was Jesse Thomas Christie, born in Halifax Co., NC., in 1815, and his father was William Christie, born 1782/83 in Halifax Co., NC., to Jesse Christie Sr., who was born abt. 1750, location unknown, but possibly in Scotland. (still working on that one). William migrated to Haywood Co., by 1837 with his wife "Charlotte Thrower" along with their children. His land and that of some of his sons bordered Madison Co., and parts of it later became what is now Crockett Co.
