Manning Cemetery Located near Maury City

Located one mile south of Maury City on the J. A. Williamson Farm.
Charted by Irene (Williamson) Powell, and Robert Togni
Around 1830 this area was known as Carter Land.
A Carter girl married a Manning boy – thus the name of the cemetery.
Both whites and slaves buried here.

The tombstones photos that you can view, below, were the only ones found in March, 2001, besides
one other stone that was broken, and not enough of it could be read to identify who it was for.

There are many more graves than stones. Many of the colored dead are of the Jelks family.

My Uncle Mervyl Manning (son of John Benjamin Manning and Mary Cornelia Jane Agee) took me to this graveyard about 1980. It seems that about that time there were 10 to 15 tombstones standing. After this I ran across the above Cemetery Record in the Crockett County Library in Alamo. I added two names to that record as noted by **. The tombstones were flat and had evidently been covered when Irene Powell catalogued the Cemetery. When last I visited the cemetery on November 28, 1997 the only tomb stone still visible in the underbrush was Marina Wood.

The only Manning I know of on the above list is Marina (Manning) Wood. Her tomb stone was place by her son Francis J. Wood. The inscription reads “Sacred is the Memory of My Mother Marina Born May 8, 1820 Died May 16, 1858”. I couldn't read an inscription beneath her vitals except for “No pompous ….. Farewell F J Wood”. According to the Goodspeed History of Tennessee “Captain Francis J. Wood was born Jan 27, 1839 in this county once Haywood and is a son of William and Marina (Manning) Wood, both natives of N.C. Father born 1812 & d. 1841; Mother d. 1858”.

The Manning that Irene Powell mentions in the preface is Reuben Thomas Manning who married Mary Tennessee Carter in 1860. They had three children including my great grandfather John Benjamin Manning. She died about 1869 and Reuben remarried. On the farm where the cemetery is located still stand two (as of 1997) two log corn cribs under tin roofs that were built by Reuben Manning according to my Uncle Mervyl.
