The Clay County Historical Museum, Henrietta, Texas — Memories and History

The Clay County Historical Museum operates out of the county's original 1890 jail building in Henrietta, one block from today's Clay County Courthouse. The county had already built a red-brick-and-sandstone courthouse in 1884; the jail followed six years later, and nearly a century after that, it reopened in the 1980s as a museum preserving the county's pioneer history.

The building itself tells two stories at once. One half once served as living quarters for the county sheriff and his family; the other held the cold steel cages that once housed prisoners. Exhibits inside focus heavily on early pioneers and Native American history in this part of North Texas, alongside the building's own law-enforcement past.
