About The 1840 Census

The 1840 census format included the name of a head of household; the number of free white males and free white females in specific age categories; the name of a slave owner; the number of slaves owned by that person; the number of male and female slaves by age categories; the number of foreigners (not naturalized) in a household; the number of deaf, dumb, and blind persons within a household; the number and age of each person receiving a military pension; and the number of persons attending school.

The National Archives and Records Administration microfilm for the 1840 census is contained on 580 rolls of 35mm film, series M704.

Census Day

Congress specified a "census day" for gathering information from each household in America.  That day was not the day the enumerator arrived at a household; it was the day for which all statistics of the census was collected.  Census Day for 1840 was 1 June and time allowed was 18 months.

Only the head of household information is included here since we do not have access to the complete microfilm records at our homes.  If there are any changes, notes or additions that your transcriber's made, the are contained in parentheses ( ).  A question mark indicates that the transcriber could not make out all the characters or were not sure of the name spelling.  In addition, some variations of name spellings were added to help the researcher when using our search engines.  Example:  Bledsaw (Bledsoe) or More (Moore).
