These surname indexes were built to answer one question quickly: does this name appear in this census at all? Each block covers a range of surnames within one enumeration and points to the page where the household was recorded. From there the full census transcription fills in the household.

They sit under Crockett and Dyer counties but reach into neighboring Haywood, Gibson and Madison. That is exactly what makes them useful. They cross county lines, catching families who lived near a boundary and were counted on the far side.
