Somervell County, Texas Obituaries — A Records Index

This index gathers transcribed obituaries for Somervell County, Texas, the smallest of the three Texas counties covered in this archive alongside Clay and Childress counties. Somervell County was formed entirely from Hood County on March 15, 1875, after residents in the area petitioned for their own county government, citing the distance to existing markets and county seats. It was named for Alexander Somervell, who had led an expedition into Mexico under the Republic of Texas.

Glen Rose, the county's only seat since its founding, traces back to a trading post established by brothers Charles E. and George Barnard in the late 1840s, and grew around Barnard's Mill, built in 1860. By the 1880 census, the county held 2,649 residents overall, but only 132 of them lived in Glen Rose itself — the rest spread across smaller communities including Wilcox, Rainbow, Nemo, and Glass, several of which appear in the obituary transcriptions indexed here.
