John Michael Hewitt
(August 19, 1945- August 5, 2005)

John was born in Memphis, Tennessee, on August 19, 1945.  he graduated from Central High School, where he was a member of the Marching Band.  John attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and after joined the Air Force.

John met his wife, Elizabeth, at her father's tropical fish store.  Happily married for 32 years, they enjoyed gardening and being outdoors.

John was husband, brother and a friend to many as owner of Overton Automotive.  He was a gifted mechanic, as well as a dreamer, inventor and tinkerer.  John was enthusiastic about everything he attempted.  He always expected the best of people and frequently encouraged the neighborhood kids to always do their best.

Many neighbors will remember John as generous with his time and talents.  Frequently, he repaired older ladies' cars and then insisted they could pay him later.

John deeply loved his father, Clay Hewitt. Even when John's illness weakened him, he insisted on putting up the Christmas lights on his roof eaves, at least partially in memory of his father.  Tradition and honor, and home and family were important to him.

John was protective of his wife, Elizabeth, and until the very end, he was optimistic about achieving full recovery from his illness.  We will miss him.

We celebrate John's life and commit him to God's eternal care as we join together in community on this day of farewell.
