CLARA CHISM, ARTIST, DIES

Mrs. Clara (Clancy) Phillips Chism, of 560 Woodmere, wife of H. Douglas Chism, Jr., an artist and gardener by hobby, dies at 11:35 a.m. today at Baptist Hospital at the age of 52.
Born in Memphis, Mrs. Chism graduated from Lausanne School for Girls and attended Fairmont School in Washington D.C.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Phillips, Jr.
Mrs. Chism received numerous awards for her painting and gardening. In 1962, she had a one-woman art exhibit at City Hall and displayed a series of portraits of "Memphis characters" including Tony (Monk) Cassata, Arthur Halle, Dr. Farrell Varner and cabinet maker Oster Brink.
Mrs. Chism was a member of the Junior League and the Woman's Exchange and served on the board of the Little Garden Club. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church where she was active in Altar Guild.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Chism is survived by a son, Douglas Chism II, and a sister, Mrs. Jerome Morrison, both of Memphis.
