Looking for info on my g-g-grandmother Charlotte COGBURN, born 1804 in the
Edgefield Community, SC. Listed in Gibson Co 1840 & 1850 Census as head of
family under her maiden name of COGBURN. She had 3 children fathered by a
Cherokee man: David (1833- ?), John (1833-1907) and Elizabeth COGBURN (1837-?).
Charlotte married John BROWN in 1870. Was he the father of her children? My
g-grandfather John COGBURN married 1st Melissa BAILEY in 1862 and 2nd Eugenia
HICKS BROWN in 1876. I am seeking the identity of the Cherokee man. Could he
have been the John BROWN she later married? Also seeking info on Eugenia HICKS

Mays (Thomas Jefferson Mays born 1857 ) Dan Mays died during civil war. Tom J.

Seeking information on the John Wesley OLIVE family who lived on the Bluff
Road in the Eaton community John Wesley died in 1930 and is buried in the
Mayfield Cemetery his father was John Addison OLIVE and his mother was Martha
Jane SORRELL. One of John Wesley's wife was Elizabeth Martha BATES. One of John
Wesley's daughters was Imogene Olive Howell born 1901 who married Dewey Howell.

his wife Frances BRIGHT PATE (m. 1818, Marlboro Co., SC)of Gibson Co, TN.
Frances "Frankie" was my grandmother through her first, brief marriage (1807) to
the senior Thoroughgood PATE (d. c. 1809, Richmond Co., NC). Their daughter
Elizabeth K. PATE m. John Weldon STUBBS of Marlboro. John BRICKHOUSE and Frances
had several children of their own: Arnold R. (c. 1820--1861/65), Murray (c.
1830--1861/65) m. Susan TINKLE (1854), John W. (b. c. 1828) m. Martha M.
EDMUNDSON (1861), Latimer (1822--1892) m. Mary C. ODOM, Harriet (1825-1891) m.
William M. JONES (1846), and Eliza (1835-1900) m. Arville B. Whitehurst. Many of
these persons are buried at Walnut Grove Baptist Church. Also interested in the

Seeking info. on William Porter WARD b. 1879-80,m. 1905 to Emma Pearl Austin
(1885-1967) Scotts Hill, Henderson Co. William Porter's mother was Annie L.
JOHNSON WARD. Siblings were Benjamin F., James A., and Elizabeth. The 1900
census shows Annie and children in Henderson Co. The 1910 and 1920 censuses show
Wm. Porter & Pearl in Bemis, Madison Co. Annie & her other children were also in
Bemis, though Annie died in 1914. Her death record lists S. JOHNSON as her
father. I need to find the full names of Annie's parents and of her husband,
whose surname was WARD. By 1940 Wm. Porter & Pearl were in Humboldt, Gibson Co.
Their children: Pauline, David, Fern, Ernest, Hugh. Pearl died in 1967. I seek
her place of burial. I also need death date & burial place for Wm Porter.

"Central" in Gibson County, and that it was out in a field. Does anybody know if

I am trying to find information on my g-g-g-granpa and g-g-grandpa. My
g-grandfather was Henry Boon dob: January 1874 in Gibson Cnty, TN. I believe
that his father is Josiah Boon and his grandpa is Sion Boon. The information
that I am trying to find is confirmation that I indeed have the correct Henry
Boon. I found a Henry R. in the 1880 Gibson Cnty census, and this is where I
obtained Josiah's name, then traced Josiah back to Sion in a census from 1860.
Henry's age on the 1880 census is listed as 6, which would be the correct age,
but it didn't list his dob so I don't want to assume that this is my Henry. Any
information or suggestions would be helpful. (I already thought of looking up
Henry in the 1890 census but the census dates skipped to 1900 in which my Henry
was already married with 3 children.

William H Bell and they moved to Carroll County, TN. He died during Civil War

I am searching for information on my grandfather - John Thomas TERRY (b.July 29, 1887 in TN - d.October 27, 1945) married to Rosie Christina WRIGHT in TN. The 1910 Census shows that they lived in Gibson County (Milan). Both are buried in Fairview Cemetery in Dyersburg, Tn.
My great grandfather - John Webb TERRY, known by his middle name,
(b.abt.1867) married to Sarah. Family stories say he came from Dublin, Ireland.
My nephew found John Webb and Sarah TERRY's name on the "immigrant's wall"
during his visit to New York. I am trying to confirm this and trace him back to
his birth in Ireland.

I am searching for burial place of Sarah "Sally" (PARKS) MAYFIELD (born
1790--died ca.1836), who was wife of Sutherland MAYFIELD. The MAYFIELD property
was near the Dyer/Gibson County lines. Sally was a member of Cumberland
Presbyterian Church so her burial could have been near the MAYFIELD home or
possibly the church. Two married daughters --Mina (Robert) PATTERSON and Melvina
(William) Branch--apparently remained in the area when Sutherland moved the
remainder of the family to Texas circa 1837. I am hoping that some of these
surname clues may help someone to identify and locate her grave for me. I will

Seeking descendants of Oliver T. ALEXANDER and wife Annie? Oliver, born in
Maury Co. TN, was son of Franklin Pierce ALEXANDER and Elizabeth Gibson. Oliver

Tapley & Prudence Echols MAYS & children, Moses, Edward, William Tapley,
James Green, Sally & Nancy came to Dyer Co from Pittsylvania Co VA in 1845 with
Prudence's parents & siblings, Nancy, Win & Nowlin. Prudence's mother was a
Terry. Tapley's mother was Leety Ingram. Ed died soon. Moses raised hogs in
Gibson Co. William Tapley m. Susan BREWER CURTIS, served CSA, captured, gave
oath, disch. 1866. Prudence died 1865, have not located grave. Ed buried Ed in
little graveyard in edge of Gibson Co., have not located it. Wm then m. young
Fannie REED, who soon died. Finally, moved to Carroll Co., m. Ida Kincannon, had
Nelson, Drewry, James & Lois. After his death in 1925 Ida moved with Lois & 2
boys & Drewry to NYC to live with Nelson. James stayed. James Green m. (1)
Louisa EASON, had Mosella & Belle, m. Mary Lou PARK, had Ernest Tapley, Edmond,

I am looking for Martha Elizabeth MARTIN-FORBUSS's parents. She was known as
Betty to her grandchildren. She was born in Gibson County TN according to her
death certificate. Her mother was full Cherokee Indian. Betty was half Cherokee
according to family lore. Her father was named on her death certificate as
Northrup MARTIN. I have found some evidence that her mother's name may have been
Morning Star. Martha Elizabeth married Ben FORBUSS around the 1880's. They had 8

Searching for info on family of Preston Holt, b: NC c.1814 and died in Gibson Co, TN 1876. Preston is buried in Holt Cemetery outside Skullbone, TN. His daughter Patience Holt married Jabes(?) Flippen. My Great-grandmother Victoria Drucilla Flippen Smith (b. 1870)is their daughter. Trying to verify name of Victoria's father and date of their marriage and the following story. The story I was told by my Grandmother, Eura Smith of Green County, Arkansas, is that Victoria's parents (Jabes and Patience) died when she was young. Victoria was then raised by a sister or half sister Probably named Mary Flippen.
Victoria married John T. Smith, Jr. in Madison(?) County, TN. I will appreciate any help in this matter.
Also, the name John Sherman Smith keeps showing up on records for the Flippen,
Holt, and Smith families in Tennessee. Any clue to the identity of this person

I'm trying to find a record of land holdings of my great grandfathers, Joshua B. YOUNG and Leonard Patrick PICKARD. Joshusa was born about 1830, died about 1885, buried at Pleasant Hill (Bucksnort) Cemetery now inactive and no headstone for him there. He purchased a farm in Butler Co. MO just prior to his death & greatgrandmother Ann Watson YOUNG moved the family there shortly after Joshua died. Land bought in Gibson Co. would have been between about 1850 & 1880.
Great grandpa Leonard Patrick PICKARD was originally from Obion Co. b.1848.
Was with Barteau's 22nd cavalry CSA during great war of northern aggression.
Married Ada Jane TUCKER in Obion Co. in Dec. 1865. Had five daughters all of
whom lived in Gibson Co., so I'm sure in his later years he owned land in Gibson
Co.. He gave my grandma Emily and grandpa Robert Robertus YOUNG 30 acres in Jan.
1896 in Gibson Co. according to my cousin. As info I now live in Charlotte NC
but grew up in Jackson TN. Many thanks.

My great-great grandfather Josiah N. Reed was born in Gibson County April 1,
1823. He married Martha C. Conwell (born August 27, 1827 in Gibson Co.) on
September 3, 1847, presumably in Gibson Co. 4 of their 9 children also born
there - Elizabeth J. 1848, Matilda A. 1849, William B. 1851, Martha A. 1853.
Family moved to Tarrant Co., Texas between 1853 and 1855. Any info on Josiah's
or Martha's families greatly appreciated.

and Sally CRUTCHFIELD born on July 5, 1815 and married Katherine WALKER of

Looking for information and/or birth records for Cary Seldon HAINES (b.1855),
Ella Love HAINES (b.1857) AND Lucy Byrd HAINES (b.I859) children of Richard

Abner Johnson (A.J.) FLETCHER was born March 7, 1838 and died Feb 18, 1900.
He lived around Currie TN and he married Martha Francis JONES. Their daughter
Sarah Alice was my Great Great Grandmother. She married Mr. HAMMONDS July 12,
1880. Their daughter Pealle Lee married George Washington ADAMS at Clear Creek
Baptist church. I think the Father of AJ was Henry born in North Carolina. I
would appreciate any information regarding this family in Gibson County, TN. I

I am looking for relatives of Katie FEATHERSTON born around 1866 in Dyer
County. Her mother was Matilda, a slave; her father was a white man, Charles
Featherston. She married a Wilkins. Also married my great-grandfather Ike WARREN

I am searching for any information (birth records, education, marriage and death) regarding my Great Uncle, Grover Cleveland Sherrod. I believe he came from around Humboldt in Gibson County. William H. "Doc" WILSON (b. 8/2/1843 d. 7/29/1907) married Mary Ella
POWELL(b.3/12/1854 d.3/4/1912) and lived in Kenton TN where he ran a merchantile
business with a Mr. Henry FLOWERS, jr. in 1874. William H. Wilson had these
children: Clair H. (b.7/28/1881 d. 12/16/1938), Cleve Ashley (b.9/4/1884 d. 3/22
1908), Howard Ainsley (?), Hube Bluch b. 1889, William Eris (b. 5/11/1887 d.
4/13/1938 my grandfather) and Rob Jinnings (b. 7/26/1893 d. 01/13/1970). I would
like to know if anyone is researching this family and if anyone in Kenton knows
where the store and homeplace would have been located. Wm. H, Mary E., Cleve A.,

Is anyone else researching James WILSON, III (b. 1815, d. 1858 and his wife
Harriet WILKES (b. 1817, d. 1854)? Goodspeed states they came to Gibson Co.
around 1836, 1840 census shows them in Gibson Co. along with their children,
John Calhoun b. 1837, Dicey b. 1839, William Hube b.8/2/1843 d. 7/29/1907, James
A. b. 1846, and Ashley b. 1849. Harriet WILKES' parents were John WILKES, Sr.
and Elizabeth STEAGALL who were in Humphreys Co. in 1805. The 1860 census shows
John C. WILSON and his wife Mary T. age 20, son 6 mos. and Ashley age 12 living
in Haywood Co. Thank you for any help.

Looking for info of any kind on Allen Barnes GIBSON DOB: Aug 12, 1883. DOD:
1947. On Feb 16, 1919 in Trenton TN he married Brennie Caledonia LYNCH DOB: May
22, 1892, DOD: July 10, 1926. Allen B. GIBSON was a farmer and Brennie Lynch
GIBSON was a school teacher. If you have any info on these two they are my
grandparents, my dad and brother were put in an orphange after my grandmother
passed on. Dad and brother know nothing of their grandparents or what their

Searching for information about the men who formed a Gold Rush overland travel party to California in spring of 1849. The group was led by Dr. Lewis LEVY and left Trenton on April 18, 1849, bound for Cal. The seven joined with a group of five from Yorkville. The full party arrived in California in the fall of 1849. My ancestor, William BURRESS, "took the fever and died" a few weeks after his arrival at Auburn, CA.
A history of the trip written in 1916 by Benton Bell SEAT (then age 87)
listed the following Gibson men on the trip: Dr. Lewis LEVY, John HOGG, Anderson
DAVIS, John POOLE, William BURRUSS, Oscar GILCHRIST and SEAT. The Yorkville
members were Bob McCAULEY, Jim TERREL, T.B. WHEELER, and two others remembered
by SEAT only as Lasly and Reed.

I am researching the BURRESS (Burris, Burruss) line in Gibson County. My
ancestor, William Burress, was there with his family in 1840 after living
earlier in Davidson and Maury counties and probably migrating from N.C. He
married Emily PARKMAN in Davidson in 1827. William went on the Gold Rush in 1849
with a group of other men from Gibson County led by Dr. Lewis Levy. He died
weeks after arriving in Auburn, CA in fall of 1849. The remaining BURRESS family
was in Trenton in 1850 but soon split up. Remaining were sons George (married
Nancy GREER, 1851), James (married Eliza EASTERWOOD, 1850) and John (married
Eliza SMITH, 1856). The widow and son Jesse Laster Burress later settled in
Obion County.

I'm looking for info on Bertha La Vada HOLT born on April 2, 1884 in
Bradford, Tenn. She married Samuel Otis HART on September 10, 1898 in Blue Ridge
Texas. She died on April 24 1953 in Sabinal, TX. Her parents were Virgil A. Holt
born Feb. 8, 1854 place unknown. Died August 29, 1925 in Dallas, Tx. His parents
were Herold HOLT and Sally GILLELAND. Bertha's mother was Molly PARKER born Nov.

My great grandfather John H. ROBERTSON and great grandmother Julia Ann COOPER
were married in Gibson Co., Tn. on 9-15-1853. My grandmother Luella ROBERTSON
was born in Newbern (Dyer Co.) Tn. on 12-10-1869. I found a Julia COOPER in the
1850 census that is online for District 7 of Gibson Co. Tn. She was listed on
2128 with Alexander COOPER age 41 and Rebecca COOPER age 38. Alexander and
Rebecca were married on 9-24-1827 in Gibson County. Could someone who knows or
is researching these COOPERs tell me if this Julia is the Julia Ann that is my
grandmother. I couldn't find John H. ROBERTSON on any of the online census.
Could someone look at the 1950 census and tell me if he is listed and with whom.
I would also appreciate it very much if someone could look at the 1960 census
