Descendants of
HARDY AND MARY CANADY
Copyright Margaret Nichol 2010
Considerable time has been spent searching for the parents of Hardy Canady, and the maiden name of Mary Canady. Hardy Canady was born in North Carolina, c1799, but the Hardy Canadys found during that time frame seem to be accounted for by other researchers. I continue to search and if a future breakthrough is made, I will add it to this report.
Hardy and Mary Canady arrived in Gibson County between 1822 and 1825. His first two children, William C. Canady and Elizabeth Canady were born in North Carolina and his third child, Uzzle Canady was born in 1825, in Tennessee. The maiden name for Mary Canady has not been confirmed but she could have been a Uzzle. Research on this couple was centered around Old Dobbs, Wayne and Lenoir Counties, in North Carolina and there were Uzzle families living in those counties.
Hardy Canady is recorded in the 1830 census, and the 1830 Sheriff’s list of Gibson County inhabitants and he is listed as bondsman for several early marriages confirming that he arrived shortly after Gibson County was formed, in 1821.
This lineage chart is my personal research except for several families whose contributions are noted.

Notes for Sarah Norton Canady
The surname for Sarah has not been found in available records. In the settlement of the estate of Norman Norton, who had moved with his family to Dyer County, Tennessee, one of his daughters is listed as Sarah Canada. After checking, as thoroughly as possible, the records of Gibson, Obion, and Dyer counties, I have found several Sarahs, but all seem to have been accounted for except the wife of Olworth Canady. I believe that the wife of Olworth Canady is Sarah Norton, daughter of Norman Norton. One of Olworth Canady's sisters, Caroline, married, Alexander Norton, a brother of Sarah. This is strong circumstantial evidence that Alexander and Sarah married into the Hardy Canady family.
1870 Census, Obion County, Tennessee, District #11, Kenton Station, the following are listed: Sarah Canaday, age 45, born in Tennessee; Eagleton Canaday, age 18, born in Tennessee; John Canaday, age 10, born in Tennessee; Adolphus Canaday, age 12, born in Tennessee; and Mary Canaday, age 8, born in Tennessee

1880 Census, Gibson County, Tennessee lists a John Kennedy, age 24, living in the household of Leonard Pickard in
District #10.

1870 Census, Gibson County, District #10 lists a Mary Jane Canady, age 11, living in the household of Mary Canady, age 73, born in North Carolina along with an Amanda Boon. This is possibly the daughter of Olworth and Sarah Canady.
