September 28, 1955

"Lightning Kills Dyer Countian- J.L. Mallard, 39-year-old Dyer countian, was killed yesterday afternoon by a bolt of lightning, while picking cotton on the E.G. Robertson farm, three miles south of Newbern."

"Mr. Mallard, his wife, and six children were harvesting cotton in an open field with no trees nearby when the bolt struck. Two of his sons, standing nearby, were not injured."

"The tragedy occurred when a small, freak electrical storm hit a small section of the county about 3:30 o'clock. Mr. Robertson said a misty rain began to fall, but the Mallard family had continued working."

"Services will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock at Mount Tizzah Baptist Church, with the pastor, the Reverend Riley Jones, officiating. Burial will be in Rehobeth Cemetery with Johnson Funeral Home of Newbern in charge."

"Mr. Mallard, a Baptist, was a life-long resident of Dyer county, born and reared in the RoEllen community."

"He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sue Mallard; three daughters, Loretta Mallard, Brenda Mallard, and Joyce Ann Mallard; three sons, Adrian Mallard, Paul Mallard and Harold Mallard; his mother, Mrs. Lilly Mallard of Flint, Michigan; six brothers, Thomas Mallard of Flint, Michigan, Ulreyus Mallard of Flint, Roy Mallard of Lexey, Arkansas, C.S. Mallard of Flint, Allen Mallard of Dyersburg and Massie Mallard of Fowlkes; and six sisters, Mrs. Ulean Harold of Dyersburg; Mrs. Allie May Obarr, Mrs. Norma Buchanan, Mrs. Lavern Woods, Miss Alva Lee Mallard, and Miss Inez Mallard all of Flint."
