State Gazette - November 11th, 1969 Retired City Merchant Dies - Walter Fowler Stricken with Fatal Heart Attack Last Night - Walter M. Fowler, Jr., retired Dyersburg business man and a highly esteemed citizen, 182 Sam Houston Drive, died unexpectedly last night of a heart attack. He was stricken at his home and moved to Parkview Hospital where he expired. Born and reared in Dyersburg, Fowler was a shoe merchant in Dyersburg for several years, operating the store on the west side of the square which was established by him and his father. He later sold the store to the Burnette chain. After his retirement he and his wife, Mrs. Katie Pate Fowler, lived in Florida for a while but returned to Dyersburg. Fowler, who was seventy-one, was a veteran of the First World War. He was a member of the Reynolds avenue Church of Christ, and his pastor, Mitchell Palmer, with Albert Lemons, will say the rites for him in the chapel of the Curry Funeral Home at eleven o'clock tomorrow morning. Murray Hamilton, Ward Browning, Edie Owen, Bob Miller, Owen Taylor, W. T. Burnette, Sr., and Auburn Stephenson will serve as Pallbearers. Interment will be in the Halls City Cemetery with Curry in charge. Besides his wife, Fowler is survived by a sister, Mrs. Lee Fowler Howell of Memphis; two half brothers, Douglas Fowler, Sr., Dyersburg and Billy Joe Fowler of Miami, Florida; One half sister, Mrs. June Fowler Padilla of Cupertino, California, his stepmother, Mrs. W. M. Fowler, Sr., of Dyersburg; nieces and nephews. |
