A COURIER JOURNEL SPECIAL SAYS--"It is stated that the President will appoint General WARREN,General ABBOTT and Lieut.BAYARD,of the United States Engineer Corps, and ex-Governor P. O. HUBERT,of Louisiana, and John SICKLES, of Arkansas, as the commission under the recent act of Congress, to make surveys and present at the next session, an efficiant plan for the reclaimation and protection of the Mississippi river batture from overflow. General ABBOTT is the same officer, who in connection with HUMPHREYS, a few years ago, made anelaborate survey and report upon the Mississippi delta.

GOSSIP FROM NEWBERN--Our town is spreading itself like a green tree, and those dry times thirsting for the running brooks that have all gone dry. The firm of PORTER & Co., have the brick now ready to build a large store South of Clay PORTER's residence, fronting the Rail Road. PARKS & Co., are putting up an additional building near their store. We have several firms now burning brick and our town will soon be lively with new buildings.Buildings are going up so fast that it is real news to the citizens here to tell them of new residences in and around Newbern. Capt. L. M. WILLIAMS has just completed an elegant cottage at his residence-contract taken by a company of Mechanics from Paducah.

RO-ELLEN ACADMENY--The next session will commence Thursday, August 27, 1874. Prof. J. M. BUTLER has charge of the school. For particulars, apply to Capt. Daniel PARKER, Parson MAHON,M.C.HART, Prof. SWIFT or Dr. WARREN. J. M. BUTLER, Prin. Ro-Ellen, Tenn. June 26, 1874.

THE P.& M. RAILROAD--The Memphis Avalanche is our authority for saying that Chancellor WALKER has just decided in his Court that there is no such corporation known to the law as the Paducah & Memphis Railroad Company. If this decision of Chancellor WALKER is 'good',all contracts entered into by the Memphis & Paducah Railroad Company are of no force, being null and void. Then, what about the Dyersburg bonds and the interest accumulating thereon?

A BULLY CROP--Drew GAULDEN tells Doc FOWKLES that his wheat field turned out 15 bushels to the acre, notwithstanding a drove of sheep grazed it all the time, while two mares and colts feasted on it a part of the time.We tell the tale as Capt.Fowkles told it to us.
