DYERSBURG STATE GAZETTE LOCAL AND PERSONAL--MAX PILLOW spent Sunday in Memphis. Dr. H. B. NUNN, of Ripley, was here last week the guest of his sister, Mrs. J. L. SINCLAIR. GEORGE GARDNER, son of Mr. & Mrs. W. C. FOWKLES, has been quite sick the past few days. Miss NANCY BELL HICKS is up after an eights' spell of fever, but is unable to be at school. Mrs. BETTIE MOORE, and son CLIFFORD, of Hurricane Hill, attended the Funeral of Mrs. FINNEY here Friday. ROBT. DAVIS--the negro indicted on the charge of killing Mrs. FEUERSTEIN at Finley will be tried in Memphis May 1st. He had asked for an earlier trial but as the State was not ready for trial, Attorney General MORRIS ask that the trial be set for May 1. HERBERT NORMAN--who was operated on in Chicago for appendicities recently, arrived this morning and is now at the home of his sister, Mrs. W. M. CAMPBELL.
FRIDAY AFTERNOON APRIL 7, 1916 MENGLEWOOD--Mrs. GEORGE MUSTAIN returned last week from Dyersburg, where she underwent an operation for appendicities, and is doing nicely. MENGLEWOOD--The school, with their teacher, Miss BETTY RUSSELL, went to Dyersburg Thursday to see the remains of their former teacher, Mrs. DICK FINNEY, formerly Miss EUNICE KIRBY, who Died in Jackson of pneumonia, leaving a little infant MARY GLENN. Miss EUNICE was of a beautiful character and had many friends here who mourn in this sad time with the husband. MENGLEWOOD--Mr. & Mrs. JACK NORRIS and son attended the Funeral of the former's father, Mr. JACK NORRIS, who had been sick for a long time. He was a good Christian and an old man whom everybody liked. He was a wealthy farmer. His remains were laid to rest in City Cemetery, Dyersburg. BRUCEVILLE--Miss RULEY PETTY, of Crockett County, is visiting her uncle, ELIHU CULIPHER, of this neighborhood. Mrs. BOYETTE, of Trimble, has been visiting her son, Prof. BOYETTE, of this place. TENNEMO--Miss RUBY KIDD of Lenox, is visiting her aunt and uncle, Mrs. JIM RICHMOND and I. N. KIDD. Mr. & Mrs. OSCAR HURD visited her uncle, B. F. KIDD, at Lenox Saturday and Sunday. ROUTE THREE--Mrs. R. C. WHITNELL has as her guests, Mrs. TOM WHITNELL and Miss WHITNELL, of Martin. JIM CROSS, of Dumas, Ark., has been visiting ESTEL BOYD. NEELY'S CHAPEL--Mrs. AUSTIN THURMOND visited her parents, Mr. & Mrs. CHILDRESS at McCullough's Chapel Saturday. The Apron Party given by Mr. & Mrs. BEN PARKS was enjoyed by a crowd. Miss ONA LEWIS was given the cake for guessing what was in it, and Mrs. CLIFFORD LANE was given the cake for hemming the best apron. BOGOTA--CLARENCE DRAKE, wife and little son from Arkansas, visited the former's father, S. O. DRAKE and family recently. JIM ARCHERLY and Miss ADDIE COTTON were married last Saturday morning at the home of DANIEL TOWNSEND, Esq. BLEDSOE performing the ceremony. Mrs. LENA REYNOLDS returned to her home at Cloverdale last Saturday after a visit to her mother, Mrs. FOX, and sister, Mrs. S. O. DRAKE. Misses PEARLEY and LOIS CHAMBERS shopped in Dyersburg last Thursday and spent the night with their grandmother, Mrs. BLEDSOE, on Tucker Street. W. C. WILSON--was called to Raliegh, near Memphis Tuesday, on account of the death of his father, SAMUEL H. WILSON. He was a prominent planter of that section and was 69 years of age. Burial took place at Jackson Wednesday. He is survived by his widow; and five sons, HUNTER WILSON, CLYDE WILSON, EMMETT WILSON, LEON WILSON, and ALVA WILSON. It is thought they are poisoned. J. T. REDDING, who left here two weeks ago for Blytheville, Ark., had to come back on account of high water. He is at his sister's, Mrs. T. J. DEW. FOWKLES--Mrs. ANNA CARDWELL, little son, FONES, and Mrs. HILL, of Dyersburg, are guests of Mr. & Mrs. W. H. FONES one day last week. Mrs. BETSY KING, of Nauvoo, spent the week-wnd with Mrs. H. H. JOHNSON. ROY RAVIS and Miss HALLIE FITZHUGH surprised their many friends of this place by getting married Tuesday night, March 28. They left Wednesday for Memphis where they will make their home. Mr. DAVIS has a position in Memphis, where he has been for sometime. He is a son of Mr. & Mrs. G. W. DAVIS, of this place. Misses BADY and MINNIE LEMONS have returned to Fulton after spending a few days with their sister, Mrs. CROCKER. BORN to Mr. & Mrs. TOM BRADEN, a fine boy, last week. WILDING has been ill several days. Miss ALICE SHERAD RAWLES is quite sick with pneumonia. Mrs. J. M. COLE and little daughter, MARTHA, are visiting in Newbern. Miss LULA TIPTON was quite sick several days and still unable to be up. ELVIS LANE, who has been going to school in Trenton, has accepted a position with Strong & Co., Memphis. SLAYTON BAKER was thrown from his wagon when his mules ran away and he suffered a broken leg. Dr. C. A. TURNER took him in his car to his office for treatment. Several children who were in the wagon at the time escaped unhurt. MEACHAM--SHELLIE FROST and sister of Lane, spent Saturday and Sunday with their aunt, Mrs. PICK KING, at this place. Mrs. C. M. SPENCE and little son visited her parents, Mr. & Mrs. WILL THOMPSON of Ft. Hudson, Saturday and Sunday. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--Mrs. O. F. McCUAN of Fulton, spent Sunday with her sons, W. D. McCUAN and ROY McCUAN. Mr. & Mrs. KELLY MARKHAM, who were married Saturday at the Hunt-Landrum Furniture Store, did not leave the store until they had bought a $400 bill of furniture for their new home. HULME, Sunday. ANDREW GIBBONS and daughter, Miss WANDA, attended the Funeral of MARION MORROW at Churchton Monday. WILL CONNER was the guest of Mrs. JESSE JENKINS last week. Mrs. VIRGIL HOUSE of Dyer was the guest of her grandmother, Mrs. R. C. HULME. CROSS ROADS--Miss ROSA PUGH spent Saturday night and Sunday with her aunt, Mrs. CULIPHER near Bruceville. J. B. CHAMBERS from Fulton, was here on business this week and bought a fine horse from N. G. McGUIRE. Mr. & Mrs. BYRL DARETY were guests Sunday of Mr. & Mrs. JOHN DARETY near Friendship. JOHN STALLCUP happened to a very painful accident Saturday while returning from Halls, when his horse stepped into a hole and fell on him, spraining his ankle badly. LUTHER SMITH is working at Ripley and expects to move his family there soon. CHURCHTON--A gloom was cast over our little town early Sunday morning, when the dear Lord called our beloved neighbor and friend, MARION MORROW, to His mansion above, that is prepared for all who believe in him. Mr. MORROW has been a resident of Churchton for many years and had a good loving disposition for all who knew him and was a member of the Christian Church here and his untimely death was a shock to the community, though he had been suffering with that dreadful disease, consumption, for sometime. He was many years a magistrate of the 9th District, and also a member of the Dyer County Court. He is survived by his wife; a son, WILLIAM MARROW; two daughters, Mrs. WILLIE FLATT, of Templeton, and Mrs. LULA HEADDEN, of Churchton. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church Monday morning, by his pastor, Elder T. M. CARNEY, of Obion. Interment took place at the McCORKLE burying grounds. CHURCHTON--SAM COLE from Newbern, was out this way Sunday, after Dr. D. J. COLE in his auto, to see his sick wife. Mr. & Mrs. MACIE D. FRYE from Dyer, were guests of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. JOE POPE recently. GEO. SHELBY has a new auto. JIMMIE HOLLISTER is confined to his bed at the home of RICE ROSE near LaPlata. REHOBOTH--ADD MILAM lost his household contents by fire Monday afternoon, the house being the property of ED BRADSHAW. HELOISE--The Death Angel visited the home of Mr. & Mrs. ED MOODY March 26th and carried away their precious little three-year-old boy. Interment took place in Finley. SAMTOWN--Mrs. DOLLIE JONES of Newbern was the guest last week at the home of W. D. JONES. Miss OLGIE DENISON visited her aunt, Mrs. MYRACE at Pleasant Valley last week. JOHNSON SCHOOL HOUSE--ELIGIE ROBERSON of Ark., is the guest of Mr. & Mrs. OLDS. Mrs. REEVES of mt. Pisgah spent one night last week with Mr. & Mrs. JEWEL HOOKS. BOGOTA--Mrs. ADA WILLIAMS and two little boys from Mason Hall, visited her parents, Mr. & Mrs. HENRY EPLY and other relatives in our burg last week. MILLARD WEBB and ARTHUR ROBESON visited the latter's sister, Mrs. LULA DAVIS and family at Caruthersville a few days recently. KENO--Keno is a progressive little village in the center of the 13th District, about two miles north of Unionville. OTHO GILMAN, who has been ill for the past few days, is reported improved. Miss DESSIE WEST will spend the weekend with friends at Halls. DeWITT HOLLAND will spend Saturday with homefolks at Newbern. FINLEY--Miss LUCILE RAWLS has been quite ill for two weeks. Misses IDA DUNCAN and PENELOPE AVERY spent the weekend here the guests of Mr. & Mrs. R. RAWLS. BONICORD--TOM SMITH carried his little boy and girl to Memphis Monday to be treated. ALVIS CLARK and sister, CARRIE MAI, of Hawkinsville, visited JOHN ELLIOTT and sisters Sunday. MIDDLE CITY--Mrs. A. B. DICKERSON is still confined to her bed with a lingering illness. Jr. TRIMBLE--Mrs. LATHUM has returned to her home in Little Rock, after a pleasant to her daughter, Mrs. HARRY WEIDEN. IRA BAKER and wife have moved to Arkansas and Dr. and Mrs. TAYLOR have moved into the BAKER residence. TUESDAY AFTERNOON APRIL 18TH, 1916 MRS. GEO. CLARK--Died Monday afternoon at 3:15 at her home on Main Avenue after a short illness. She was before her marriage, Miss BESSIE PARTIN. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. L. B. PARTIN and was raised and educated in this city. Shortly after her marriage, she and her husband moved to Memphis but returned here two years ago and have made their home here ever since. Besides her husband and parents, she is survived by two half-brothers, FLAVE, of this city, and WILL, of Tiptonville. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p. m. at the Cumberland Church, Rev. Mrs. FANNIE HARWOOD left Monday for Morristown, where she will spend some time with her son, Dr. R. N. HARWOOD and family. Mrs. L. M. MICHELL, of Dyersburg, was the hostess to a number of friends of her neice, Miss MAMYE MICHELL at Eureka Springs, Ark., one day last week. ESQ. J. F. ROBERTSON--of Crockett Mills was in the city Monday. The 'Squire and family returned Saturday from their winter home in Florida and all are enjoying very fine health. Mr. ROBERTSON always returns to the old home to celebrate the anniversary of his birth and next Saturday, April 15th, marks the 82nd mile-post in the busy useful life of the popular citizen. Friendship News. MRS. ALLIE JONES--wife of ELIAS JONES, Died April 1st, 1916. She was born in Hickman, Ky., February 15th, 1874. When she was seventeen years of age, she came to Dyer County, where she made her home until death. In 1896, she was married to ELIAS JONES and to this union ten children were born. She is survived by her husband and eight children, aged father, six brothers, three sisters, and a host of friends. She confessed faith in Christ when she was sixteen years old and lived a faithful Christion until death called her home, where there is no pain or sorrow. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, April 2nd.

TRIMBLE--ERIC COLLINS and Miss BERTA COLLWELL were married Saturday night at the Methodist parsonage, Rev. SELLERS officiated. Misses RETA and MILDRED COLLWELL are visiting their grandmother, Mrs. WELLS in Columbia, Ky. Mrs. DORA BOULTON was in Memphis the first of the week, she was accompanied home by her brother, OLLIE PIERCE. HALL PITTS and family of Kenton spent Sunday with his parents. Miss ANNIE PITTS of Union City visited her parents, Mr. & Mrs. A. L. PITTS Sunday. TRIMBLE--Mr. McMANNUS--Died April 16th after a lingering illness. He leaves a father, several brothers and sisters. TRIMBLE--The infant of Mr. & Mrs. MICHALS Died Tuesday. BOGOTA--WILL GIFFORD and family from Memphis, visited his sister, Mrs. CECIL PIERCE, who is real sick, last Saturday and Sunday. GEORGE LEE PIERCE and wife are the proud parents of a fine eight-pound girl. HOLLOW WEBB and wife have a fine boy. FINLEY--Mrs. P. B. JONES is in Trenton visiting her daughter, Mrs. ALLEN LASSITER. Later she will go to Fiske, Mo. Mrs. FIELDER DUNNEGAN and children, of Friendship, are spending the week with her father, JAMES WOODS. MYRTLE, the daughter of W. LEWIS, was married to Mr. VINCENT of Menglewood Wednesday, April 12, Rev. JOHNSON performing the ceremony. BORN to Mr. & Mrs. POLK BREWER, April 13th, twin girls. They have been named MARY and MARTHA. BORN, April 3rd, to Mr. & Mrs. HINSON, a daughter. E. HICKS has a new Ford car. F. E. JONES has purchased a new Chevrolet car. BONICORD--ELMER MILLER has purchased a new Ford car. This makes five cars in Bonicord now. Three owned by TOM JEFF WALKER and one by Dr. NASH. The entertainment given at the home of Mr. & Mrs. J. N. SORRELL last Friday night in honor of WILLIE FLOWERS, was enjoyed by a large crowd. S. H. MOORE, of Dyersburg, is at his daughter's, Mrs. NORVILLE this week, having some ditching and farm work done. A THREE ROOM HOUSE--the property of ALICE FOUST, colored, situated opposite the F. O. B. Hall in the rear of Horton Street was destroyed by fire Wednesday morning. Very little of the contents were saved. There was no insurance. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--Miss MARTHA SEGRAVES has returned home after a two weeks visit with her sister, Mrs. ALBERT WOFFORD near Newbern. Miss STELLA WALKER, attending school in Memphis, is spending the weekend with her mother, Mrs. IDA G. WALKER. MRS. BESSIE PARTIN CLARKE--was born in Summerville, Fayette County, Tennessee, January 24, 1879; married July 3, 1895; died April 17, 1916. Such is the brief record of this beautiful life. Happy in her joyous school days, a fine student, the idol of her family; she was a favorite of all who knew her. After her early marriage to Mr. GEORGE CLARKE, they moved to Cleveland, Miss., and established a beautiful home at that place. I am told that this home, graced by her beauty, goodness, and intelligence, became the center of the social, intellectual and educational life of the town. Mrs. CLARKE was the superintendent of the Primary Department of the Sunday School and did therein a grand work. She was prominent in the U. D. C. circle and a writer of no mean ability. A Friend. Miss LUCILE PITTMAN returned yesterday from Humboldt where she attended the Presbyterial. Mrs. BURBANK will come in a few weeks to be the guest for some time of her sister, Mrs. MIRA PARR. WATKINS of Memphis has been here the past week with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. W. R. HAYS. WILLIAM ACY MAGEE, while pole vaulting with other boys in the yard of E. G. LESTER, fell and broke both bones in his left arm. The young man was hurried home and Dr. WALKER summoned. The boy's father, M. E. MAGEE was attending the Tinsley meeting at the Christian Church and he was sent for. Little URSULA WEAKLEY was badly hurt when she fell from her bed while playing last night. Her head came in contact with the window sill near the bed and cut an ugly place at the base of her skull. She is healing nicely. Mrs. J. F. COOPER of Trenton spent several days here with Mrs. J. P. W. A. WILLIAMS and family of Templeton visited at Robert LEDSINGER'S Friday night. Mrs. JIM JONES and her daughter, Miss BERNICE, visited Mrs. PEARL COLE of Newbern last week. A PRETTY WEDDING OF INTEREST--to many friends was quietly solemnzied in St. John's Methodist Church yesterday afternoon at 2:30 when Miss JULIA RUCKER, neice of Mr. GEORGE MILLER, became the bride of Mr. WILLIAM C. McCREARY, the Rev. A. J. MEADORS officiating. For the ceremony the bride was gowned in a tailor suit of colbolt blue taffeta with a hat and accessories in harmony, she wore a cosage of valley lillies and sweet peas. Immediately following the ceremony, Mr. McCREARY and his bride left for their plantation home near Earle, Ark. OLD GRANDMA McCORKLE--died at her home in Yorkville Monday. She leaves several children and grandchildren to mourn her death. LISBON SCHOOL HOUSE--We are glad to learn that our neighbor, EUNICE COLE is improving after hie operation. FRANK DAVY has purchased a new car for the pleasure of himself and his wife. Mrs. LITTLE LOGAN had to go to the Memphis hospital for an operation. We are sorry that Mrs. BERNICE LIGHT has been refused our school for the next season as the children and patrons loved her. HENRY GWALTNEY & MISS AMANDA BAKER--were married Wednesday evening at eight-thirty at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. & Mrs. CALVIN BAKER, east of town. The ceremony was said by Rev. H. S. McCORD in the presense of friends and relatives. The bride wore a blue tailored suit and white hat. Miss GLADYS FOWKLES was bridesmaid. HERMAN SORRELL & MISS GRACE PAYNE--were married Sunday at noon at the residence of J. N. SORRELL, Rev. J. B. MORRISON officiating. A wedding dinner was enjoyed by the bridal party and relatives after the ceremony. BOGOTA--LAWRENCE CRISWELL and family and mother, from near Spring Hill visited his brother, TOM CRISWELL and family last week. Mrs. NORA GIFFORD and two little sons spent this week near Lane, visiting her parents, DICK THURMAN and family. Mrs. LENA CRENSHAW and daughter, SYBIL, from Herald City, spent this week here with her parents, W. T. CRISWELL and family. LENOX--Mrs. ROENA SANDERS is visiting Mrs. BETTIE McDANIEL at Finley. Miss RUBIE SMITH, of Menglewood was the guest of Mr. & Mrs. CLYDE SMITH Sunday. Miss LAURA WILKES of Finley, is teaching music in this place. FIRE ON BROADWAY--Two houses were lost by fire and one badly damaged on Broadway Wednesday night. The fire started about nine o'clock in the house of CORNELIUS WYLIE, colored, and before the alarm was turned in the entire house was a mass of flames. The house to the South, owned by JOHN SOWERS and occupied by JOHN HALE, colored, was badly damaged on one side and the roof. The fire spread to the house owned by MAX SALENFREIND on the North, caught fire and because of lack of hose was completely destroyed. This house was occupied by J. L. PRINCE, an employee of the Standard Oil Co. Mr. PRINCE saved most of his furniture, but one of his little children came near being burned up before she could be gotten out. BOB SLAYTON, who was assisting in removing the furniture, discovered the child in bed and got her out before the fire entered the room. APRIL 26TH--CHAS C. TRABUT, aged 45, prominent Nashville attorney, who this morning shot and killed attorney HARRY S. STOKES, aged 39, chief counsel for the tax payers in chancery court investigations of city conditions, made bond in the sum of $25, 000 late this afternoon and was released from county jail. JOHNSON SCHOOL HOUSE--Miss BEULAH STALLCUPP spent one night last week near Friendship, the guest of her grandmother, Mrs. LATHAM. Misses RUTH and MARGARET JONES spent the latter part of last week in Halls with their grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. FITZHUGH. Relatives here have received an announcement of the Birth of a daughter on Monday to Mr. & Mrs. J. B. YORK, Jr., at Friendship. Mrs. LENA DEAN LEWIS of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, arrived Wednesday morning to apend a few weeks with her mother, Mrs. MOLLIE DEAN of Bonicord. WEBB TUCKER and Miss NAOMI HENDRIX were united in marriage on the evening of April 19th, at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. JIM COOLEY, of RoEllen. Mrs. A. M. REED of Helena, Ark., is here for an extended visit to her son, JOHN H. REED. She was accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. M. R. BURKE of Denver, Colo., and the latter's daughter, Mrs. APPLEWHITE. This is the first time Mr. REED has seen his sister since 1897. The depot store of KING ROGERS is being moved into the old Jacocks stand, this building having been purchased by Mr. ROGERS from J. T. JACOCKS. I. G. PICKARD is here this week from Jackson, Miss. He states that he and Mrs. PICKARD and BUSTER, are coming back to Dyersburg to live. AYERS--Mrs. J. W. LITTLE visited her sister, Mrs. JAP HOPKINS Sunday afternoon. Miss VIRGIE MOORE from out in the sticks, spent Sunday with FAY SPENCER. Mr. & Mrs. WADDLE McCLURE spent last week with her parents, Mr. & Mrs. JOHN WELLS, of Finley.
