STATE GAZETTE NEW BANK OPENS--With the opening of the Mercantile Bank & Trust Company last Monday, our city can boost of four banks. Officers are: N. W. CALCUTT, President; Tom W. NEAL, Vice-President; I. Newt BUNNELL, Chamblin SIMPSON, Cashier, with W. C. REED as assistant cashier. The Directors are: N. W. CALCUTT, Tom W. NEAL, I. N. BUNNELL, Chamblin SIMPSON, J. M. BRACKIN, James W. BAKER, A. Pete FORD, L. M. MICHELL, E. L. CUTLER, A. J. MOORE, E. F. DAVIS and Mit WHITSON. All men are identified with interests of Dyer Co. The capital stock is $200,000. W. H. ANDERSON DEAD--W. H. ANDERSON, known as "Tip" ANDERSON, died at Tiptonville Sunday. His remains were brought to Dyersburg on the boat and transferred to an Illinois Central train, the burial taking place at Troy. His remains were accompanied by his sons, Powsey and Andy ANDERSON, his daughter, Mrs. W. C. PEACOCK, and a host of friends. The Masons and many Confederate soldiers met the party at the boat and accompanied the remains to the train. Mr. ANDERSON was an old Confederate soldier and the comrade of some of Dyer County's veterans. The sons of Tip ANDERSON request us to thank the Masons and old Confederate soldiers for kindness shown them while in Dyersburg on their sad mission. NEGRO HOLDUP--Geo. JOHNSON, Bliss OLDHAM and Boss COCHRAN, all negroes, are in county jail. They held up Tom FOWKLES, another negro, near the depot Sunday night and took his revolver and three dollars in money. They were traced to Obion, where they were arrested Monday. AROUND THE COURTHOUSE--For genuine old war talk and war history, you should drop in. Woody CRAIG is advance guard; Wad SMITH, historian; Gus MEADOWS, sentinel; and Frank HAMBRICK, guard. There is nothing more interesting than hearing these old veterans of the Lost Cause talk and tell history just as it happened. Mollie PIERCE to Mark NEEDHAM, land 15th dist., $800. MRS. ROSA CLARK--Mrs. Rosa CLARK died of pneumonia at her residence Saturday morning at 2 o'clock after a brief illness. Mrs. CLARK came to Dyersburg five years ago from Union City and has made many friends here who were shocked at her death. Mrs. CLARK, while not a member of any church, was a christian at heart and attended the Baptist church. Her remains were taken to Paducah, KY, her old home for burial. She leaves two sons and two daughters. JOHNSTON & EASLEY--Miss Ava EASLEY was married at Greenwood, Miss., Saturday night to Mr. Preston JOHNSTON, of Memphis. Mrs. JOHNSTON is the daughter of Mrs. M. V. EASLEY, of this city and has been employed as operator for the Cumberland Telephone Company at Greenwood for sometime past. Mr. JOHNSTON is a traveling salesman for the America Tobacco Company, with headquarters at Clarksdale, Miss. The newly married couple will reside in Clarksdale. NOTICE--All parties having claims against the late Mrs. Rosa CLARK will present same to me. P. E. PICKENS. MRS. LIZZIE SARAH TODD--Mrs. TODD died at her home Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, after a lingering illness of several months. Mrs. TODD was born in Newport, KY, 69 years ago and has been a resident of Dyersburg for 34 years. She leaves a sister, Mrs. Jno. W. HENRY; two sons, Moss and Chas., and 11 grandchildren to mourn her loss. She was a faithful member of the Christian church. Her remains were interred in City Cemetery yesterday, funeral services conducted by Rev. G. A. REYNOLDS, her pastor. MARRIAGE LICENSES--Ed. WALTER to Lizzie RIMS. Ed. LIGHT to Fannie WYATT. Mr. & Mrs. John TODD, of Dyersburg, were guests of Mrs. Scrap BRADSHAW Wednesday, Newbern Tennessean. Chas. MARSHAL has gone to Chattanooga, where he accepted a position as salesman in the shoe store of Wicks & Co. Miss Sallie EASLEY left yesterday for Greenwood, MS to attend the marriage of her sister, Miss Ava, to Mr. Preston JOHNSTON, of Memphis. Ripley Enterprise. Mrs. HALL, of Havana, Cuba, is visiting her brother, Dr. A. H. MOODY, at Trinity. Dr. J. L. HUEY has located at Heloise, coming here from Memphis. We welcome him back to Dyer County. The infant son of Mr. & Mrs. Ed KING, of Fowkles, died Tuesday and was buried at Holly Springs cemetery Wednesday evening. J. W. FAULKNER and daughter of Trimble, have returned home after a week's visit to the family of B. A. HAGUEWOOD, Jr. Mr. & Mrs. R. D. PEARY and children, from Clarksdale, Miss., are the guests this week of Rev. & Mrs. A. J. MEADERS. Mrs. Frankie THOMAS and daughter, Miss Mymn, have just returned from a visit to the Louisville market. Pleas TIPTON, an old landmark of Dyer county, and one of the best citizens in the State, was visiting his neice, Mrs. PRICHARD and other friends here last week. McQUISTON and son, John Calvin, of the Atoka neighborhood, passed through here on their way to visit in Dyersburg. Covington Leader. Moss TODD, of Memphis, was in the city this week, attending the bedside of his mother. Mrs. M. E. NEWMAN, of St. Louis, is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Robert R. ROTH. Mrs. John LATTA and daughter, Miss Leslie, are in Memphis to see James K. HACKETT in "The Walls of Jerico. " Pete JOHNSON and Pearl SMITH, two negroes living at Fort Hudson, engaged in a fight Saturday night. JOHNSON lost an ear in the melee and received three painful cuts on his face. SMITH was also badly cut. Bpth have been arrested. Last Friday evening, Mrs. Mattie THOMAS entertained in honor of Mrs. Roger WOOLLEN, of Memphis with a Euchre Party. Drs. H. B. & W. T. NUNN, of Halls, spent last Sunday with their mother, who is very sick at the residence of J. L. SINCLAIR. BRADEN and wife, of Chestnut Bluff, visited relatives here. Mrs. SLAUGHTER, of Mt. Vernon, spent Monday night with Mrs. BRADEN. Bro. ACUFF and wife visited her sister, Mrs. RICHARDSON. Ben MOORE's family of Halls were with his father, Dr. MOORE, recently. Prof. Hardee WYATT, of Newbern, presented his travellogue at the schoolhouse Friday. NEWBERN--Mrs. B. R. PARKS and little daughter, Allene, have returned home, after being in Nashville several weeks on account of Allene's health. After an operation, Allene's health is completely restored. Dr. V. MOORE. who practised dentistery here for more than a year left Monday to reside at Troy. Mrs. MOORE and Dr. MOORE's mother will remove with Dr. MOORE to Troy to reside. Mr. & Mrs. Milton FARMER, nee Miss Nina TROY, visited relatives here last week, before continuing their honeymoon south to Birmingham and to Pensacola, where they will reside. STOKES--J. H. BESSENT has bought the T. J. BIGGS place and expects to move to it about April 1st. Little Mary BEAVER, daughter of Esquire R. S. BEAVER is reported recoving from a serious illness. Allen WHEELER, who lived at Tillman's mill in this district, was taken to jail last week by W. B. RALPH & J. H. GREEN, special officers. He had carried off some mules belonging to parties living near Blue Grass. Rev. J. B. HILL visited his father, J. H. HILL and family last weekend. Since our last report, the death angel has visited the home of C. T. GREEN, and taken his beloved companion. She was sick only a few days.
