DYERSBURG, TENNESSEE

MRS. W. H. TUCKER -- Mrs. W. H. TUCKER, wife of Dr. W. H. TUCKER, Jr., of Double Bridges, died at her home last Sunday, aged 43 years. Her remains were brought to Dyersburg and interred in the City Cemetery Tuesday. Rev. J. T. UPTON, her pastor, assisted by Dr. CRUTCHER, conducting the service. Mrs. TUCKER was Miss Sadie LOVE, born at Seymour, Indiana and was married to Dr. TUCKER at Kenton, Tenn., Dec. 19, 1888. Double Bridges has been the home of Dr. & Mrs. TUCKER since their marriage. Dr. TUCKER is the son of Dr. W. H. TUCKER of this city and is the president of the Bank of Halls. One child, a boy, blessed the marriage, but he died when four years old.

DEATH OF CHAS. MEYER -- Chas. MEYER, better known as "Dutch Charley" passed away at 4 a.m. Sunday. Charley was attacked with pneumonia about three weeks ago and was not strong enough to overcome the disease. He had been a sufferer for 15 years and was almost a helpless cripple for the past 5 years, and his death came as a relief from many years of pain. He had, in spite of his condition, earned a good livelihood at his trade and leaves an estate valued at more than a thousand dollard, consisting of money at local banks and real estate mortgage. Charley was born at Breslau, Germany, about 55 years ago. He was a gallant soldier of the Franco-Prussian war and was wounded three times during the war. He afterward served in the German army in West Africa. After enlistment ended, he was a gold prospector in South America, again a soldier for the German Empire in Northern India. He came to this country about 20 years ago, after an unhappy marriage. He leaves a sister, neice and nephew back in Germany. He was buried in the City Cemetery Sunday, Rev. A. J. MEADERS conducting the services at the residence of V. B. EASLEY, a friend.

MEMORIUM -- The angel of death has again claimed a victim, this time taking from us Ed G. GILMAN, of Dyersburg, Tenn. He was born August 9, 1880, died February 2, 1907, aged 26 years, 5 months and 24 days. He remembered the Creator in the days of his youth and lived a consistent Christian life and member of Mt. Vernon Baptist church until his death. Ed always wore a sunny smile and though he suffered for many months with that dread disease, consumption, he was always cheerful and bore his suffering bravely. He leaves a devoted father, mother, two brothers, four sisters, and a host of friends to mourn his death. Weep not, father, mother, sisters and brothers, but let us all live so as to meet him in Heaven where pain, suffering and sorrow can never come. Ed is not dead, but sweetly sleeping in Jesus. In the case of State vs Will ROARK, the jury before whom the case was first argued could not agree and were discharged. In the second trial the jury returned a verdict of guilty after being out three days and left the sentence in the hands of Judge JONES, who assesed the penalty of $50 fine and nine months. Mr. ROARK's attorneys appealed to the Supreme Court.

DR. FEIST FOUND GUILTY, CONVICTED of the MURDER of MRS. ROSA MANGRUM in DEC. 1905. NASHVILLE, TENN., FEB. 16. -- "Guilty of Murder in the first degree," was the verdict of the jury this morning against Dr. J. Herman FEIST, charged with the murder of Mrs. Rosa MANGRUN. Dr. FEIST's hands trembled, but he gave no other show of breaking down. Jeers of a big crowd, "Hang him, lynch him. " His attorneys notified the court of a motion of a new trial, if denied will be made to the Supreme Court. Dr. FEIST was convicted on circumstantial evidence, it being never shown how the woman came to her death, prussic acid being the theory of the State. She was a patient of Dr. FEIST and, was infatuated with him. She arranged to pay a visit to Chicago, and left home alone on the night of Dec. 14, 1905, to take a train. The first intimation received by the Nashville public came from St. Louis, where her sister, Mrs. Logan TROUSDALE, went to make a search for her. On Jan. 25, her body was found floating in the Ohio river near Cairo;the supporter of the stocking in which she was supposed to have carried $1, 400 cut, the stocking drawn down and the money missing as well as $1,200 worth of jewelry. Some days after the disappearance, FEIST deposited $500 in the bank, which was rather unusual. Mrs. TROUSDALE testified that going to FEIST and demanding information about her sister, he became very agitated and finally told her that she was suffering with a disease and had gone away to be cured. FEIST did not take the stand.

CHURCH GROVE -- Will VINCENT & Clay DAVIS each have a telephone in their residence. Ivor JOHNSON, wife and sister, Miss Jennie JOHNSON, visited Ike JONES and family, of Dyersburg Sunday. Mrs. Sam JONES, of Middle Tennessee, has been the guest of Mrs. Clint FOWKLES recently, is also visiting her sister, Mrs. Clyde MACKADOO. Mrs. Charley PEACOCK is spending a few days with Mrs. Gwinne GREEN.

HELOISE -- Joe LITTLE has moved from Heloise to Ayers, where he will make his future home. Naomi PATE has just returned from a visit to her neice, Miss HOLLINGSWORTH of Nashville.

UNION HALL -- Chas. SPEED and family, of Bogota, are visiting the family of S. B. BURKS. The young people very much enjoyed the Valentine party given by Mr. & Mrs. H. M. BUTLER Thursday night. Mrs. Tom ROGERS visited the family of Will TRAINHUM Sunday. On Sunday night, Feb. 17, the death angel visited our community taking Mrs. Dr. TUCKER, Mrs. Ben CLEMENTS and Twuttie CHAMBERS from their suffering. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved families.

FINLEY -- Mrs. Pet JONES has returned home since our last writing and Mrs. F. JONES is still in Martin. Mrs. LIGHT, Mrs. TIPTON and Miss Sue Addie TIPTON, of near Dyersburg, were guests of Dr. & Mrs. MOODY Sunday, also Charlie LIGHT, of Chic. Mrs. Vick BREWER is very ill in connection with a broken limb. Mr. & Mrs. James WOOD has returned home after a visit with friends and relatives in Senath, MO. George MATTINGLY, of Alamo, Illinois, was here last week, leaving his little daughter, Georgia, for the benefit of her health. Little Annie JONES is home again after a prolonged visit in Tiger Tail. Miss Julia PRITCHETT is quite ill. Owing to illness, Miss Lyde CHILDRESS was unable to be at her place in the schoolroom Tuesday. John WELLS lost a good horse last week with distemper.

THURSDAY, Feb. 21, 1907 -- Dr. E. L. RAWLES has returned from Memphis where he underwent an operation for appendicitis. N. L. SCOBEY has been reappointed postmaster at Newbern. Mrs. Sallie WHITE of Halls, who has been visiting Mrs. PEDEN, has returned home. Mr. & Mrs. W. C. VIAR, of Halls, were guests of Mrs. Bettie PARISH, Sunday. Ernest RICE and Carroll DOYLE have returned from Liverpool and London, England. Gen. Wm. G. BRIEN, a distinguished Nashville lawyer, has been in Dyersburg this week, on legal business. Frederick ELY, a prominent architect of Memphis is in this city, having prepared plans for the enlargement of the Masonic building. Mrs. M. M. MARSHALL left yesterday for St. Louis, where she will be a guest of her brother. Miss Mary KERR left Friday for St. Louis for an extended stay. Harris PARKS, of Union City, a native of Dyer County, is a candidate for trustee of Obion County. Misses Mabel SWINDLER and Norma YOUNG, of Newbern, came here last Friday. Miss Mary CRENSHAW, teacher of the South Dyersburg School, leaves to-day to spend a few days with homefolks at Church Grove. B. M. GREEN and family have gone to Memphis, were they will make their future home. J. P. PELHAM is going to build a fine residence on the Newbern road adjoining T. C. GORDON's and opposite Mrs. Sallie FOWLKES' place. Mr. CUTLER is going to build on a lot recently purchased from Dr. SUMMERS in the same neighborhood. Mrs. D. T. DAUGHERTY, of St. Louis, was the guest last week of her cousin, Mrs. REDDING. Mrs. DAUGHERTY left for her home Monday and was accompanied by Mr. & Mrs. REDDING, who will spend several weeks there. Mrs. Champ SIMPSON entertained Wednesday evening in honor of Mrs. Tom DAWSON, of Fort Dodge, Iowa. FLEMING of Dyersburg, has moved his family to Ripley and occupy the PARTEE cottage on Tucker street. We welcome this estimable family to our town. Mr. FLEMMING is a valued employee of The Mengle Box Co., and will charge of their mill to be erected at an early date at the Mounds, sixteen miles west of Ripley. The Ripley News. Mrs. Myra SUMMERS returned this week from Dawson Springs, where she has been recuperating for the past month. Jerry DIEHL, from Sunfield, Mich., who was here last week to attend the trial of Claude ROGERS, was so impressed with the cordiality, he contemplates locating here in the near future. Welborn MILLER, the 17 year-old son of Mr. & Mrs. States MILLER, left home last Thursday night, much to the anxiety of his parents. He was found by his father at Atoka and returned home Sunday morning.

STOKES -- Prof. BROWDER, of Henderson, is teaching a singing class at Holly Grove. T. J. BIGGS is proposing to sell his farm and stock and expects to move to Bonicord to engage in the mercantile business. M. M. EASON & wife have a new baby boy at their home, born a few days ago. W. T. BLEDSOE has moved his family here from Bogota. Mrs. C. T. GREEN is quite sick with pneumonia. John ELIZER had his hand pretty badly hurt a few days ago by the explosion of a loaded shell, which was wedged in the breach of his gun and he was trying to extract it. The death angel came to the family of Esq. R. S. BEAVER and wife last Sunday and claimed for its victim their oldest daughter, Miss Mina. She was 11 years old.

MAXEY -- At the home of the bride's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Will FULLER, near Maxey, Ben FUMBANKS and Miss Dolly FULLER were married the 12th, Rev. G. W. EVANS officiating. After the ceremony and congratulations were over, an elegant supper was served. They received many beautiful presents. Mr. & Mrs. FUMBANKS are now at home at the home of A. L. FUMBANKS.

ROUTE #4 -- Miss Blanche TURNER returned last Saturday and took up school Monday. Allen RANKIN and Erb TAYLOR are already wearing smiles like waves on the ocean. Mrs. WALKER and son, Clarence, of Dyersburg attended church at Pleasant Hill Sunday.

FOWKLES -- Miss Hallie FITZHUGH was the guest of Mrs. PARISH, of Dyersburg Sunday. Will KING and wife are at his father's while Will is at work on the railroad. Mrs. HUFFMAN has been visiting her parents at Brighton, her brother, Mr. McCLISTER of Brighton was her guest this week. Tom VIA is quite sick of pneumonia. His sons, Will, Frank and John have come to attend his bedside, and Ernest has been called from Memphis. Mr. & Mrs. Edgar KING are rejoicing over the arrival of a girl baby.

NEWBERN -- Miss Kate HARRISON, of Covington, visited Miss Georgia ATKINS over the weekend. Mr. & Mrs. MERCER, who have been visiting Mr. & Mrs. S. P. INMAN, left for New Orleans and Cuba, where they will visit several weeks. Miss Callie McLESKY, daughter of Rev. Joe McLESKY, is visiting relatives in Dyer this week. Mrs. Jep SWINDLER had as a visitor, Mrs. HURT, of Halls, during last week.

LENOX -- Albert BECKETT and his little girl are quite sick, also Bud LUMLEY and John NICHOLS' little boy are very sick with pneumonia. J. SHERWOOD has sold out and has gone to Texas to make his home. Albert BECKETT received the sad news Monday that his sister, Mrs. HARRIS, of Dyersburg, being dangerously ill and not expected to live many days.
