STATE GAZETTE AROUND THE COURT HOUSE -- We bow our heads in grief to the awful calamity that has come to the home of Will Branch FOWKLES. He has lost all that is dearest to this life, the companion of his heart, the mother of his children and the light of his home. She has gone to that unclouded home where there is no pneumonia and no sickness, and blessed be His holy name, no parting. May His face shine on the bereaved household. Rueben. REFUSES PENSION: RALIEGH, N. C. JAN. 26. -- The Senate of N. C. received a letter from Mrs. "Stonewall" JACKSON, declining to accept a pension of $100 a month, provided under a resolution introduced a few days ago. "I most welcomingly appreciate this patriotic and loyal tribute to the name of my hero husband, " she says, "but I do not feel that I would be justified in accepting it. I am informed that the laws of N. C. limit all pensions to those who have not $500 of personal property, and as I do not come under this law, I respectfully request that the bill be withdrawn. " Mrs. JACKSON suggested that the proposed pension in her behalf be appropriated for the relief of destitute widows of Confederate soldiers. CASHIER PROMOTED -- Mr. Tom U. WILLINGHAM, who has been the popular cashier of the local ICRR freight office since the promotion of Mr. STOVALL a number of months ago, has been promoted to the position of freight agent at Dyersburg. SCHULTE, aged 63, a capitalist and banker of Memphis, Tenn., committed suicide here today at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, where he was being treated for nervous trouble. MARRIAGE LICENSES -- J. A. While fifty feet of her own doorway at Memphis, Miss Nellie MURRAY was viciously assaulted by an unknown negro, whose purpose was robbery. Before snatching Miss MURRAY's handbag, the brutal highwayman struck his helpless victim a blow across the face, which will leave her disfigured for life. RUSSELL A. ALGER -- formerly Secretary of War, died at Washington last Friday. COL. JAMES WALKER -- of Mack, Lauderdale County, has the unique distinction of having served as a magistrate for 54 years. LEICHTMAN, after a months visit to relatives in Nashville, has returned home. W. T. SUGG has moved his stock of goods to a little store east of the Hotel Virginia and is closing out. W. W. GRINTER, of Allensville, Ky., has accepted a position in L. HARRISON's drug store as pharmacist. John G. SEAT of Caruthersville, Mo., spent a few days in town with his son, Glenn. Carl MOORE of Halls, was a Dyersburg visitor last Friday. Walter PURYEAR and wife have gone to Battle Creek, Mich., where Mrs. PURYEAR will remain for her health. Mr. PURYEAR will return home today. Sarah Frances HARWOOD is the newest member of Dr. & Mrs. R. N. HARWOOD's family. The young lady arrived last Friday. The Al BENTON killed at Blytheville, Ark., was not the son of the late Ben BENTON as stated in these columns several weeks ago. Mrs. ELLIS, of Memphis, has just heard from her son, who is now at Greenwood, and says Al is very much alive. Col. Tom NEAL, of Dyersburg, formerly editor of Neal's State Gazette, honored our sanctum with a visit last Tuesday. Halls Graphic. CHANGE AT DEPOT -- Tom U. WILLINGHAM took charge of the IC station last Tuesday. Mr. WILLINGHAM does not come as a stranger nor does Mrs. WILLINGHAM, who was Miss Gladys VAUHN, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J. T. VAUGHN. WE ARE IN RECEIPT -- of an invitation to a recital to be given by Miss Ida DUNCAN and Mrs. M. B. SOMERVILLE at Belcourt Seminary, Washington. WOMAN'S MISSIONARY SOCIETY -- will meet at the Methodist parsonage next Wednesday, Feb. 6th. This meeting is the last of the fiscal year, at which officers for the coming year will be elected. ELIZABETH WHITSON -- On Saturday, January 26, the soul of Mrs. Elizabeth WHITSON passed to its rest from the home of her grand daughter, Mrs. Mat HOLLOMAN at Kenton, Tenn., and was buried on the following day at that place. Mrs. WHITSON was 92 years old, having been born in N. C. and moved to West Tennessee when quite young and located at Eaton, Gibson County, but later moved to Dyersburg and was a resident of this county for more than 50 years. She was a charter member of McCullough's Chapel. She was probably the oldest living mother of a Confederate soldier in Dyer County. She was the oldest of a large family and the last to die. She leaves a grandson, Mitt WHITSON of Finley, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mag FIELDS, of this county. MRS. WILL BRANCH FOWKLES -- Mrs. Minnie FOWKLES, wife of Will Branch FOWKLES and daughter of Mr. & Mrs. F. M. HAMBRICK succumbed to an attack of pneumonia, last Friday morning. She leaves three little children, one boy and two girls. She was born near Hurricane Hill, thirty-nine years ago and married Will Branch FOWKLES thirteen years ago. The funeral services were conducted at the residence Sunday by Rev. Joe McCLUSKY and Rev. A. J. MEADERS. Interment in Hurricane Cemetery. BRUCEVILLE -- We have a very good school, Miss Nannie WEAKLEY of Dyersburg teaching. Horace PALMER is building a new store. Earl LEGGETT has returned from his Memphis trip. Millard THORTON and his wife have returned home from their Arkansas trip. CHEROKEE -- Our school is progressing nicely under the direction of Miss Ethy MEADOWS for principal and Miss Evie MANNEL for assistant. We have 56 pupils. We are glad to welcome F. E, BECTON and family to our vicinity. Mrs. M. E. QUIMI and brother, David, of Double Bridges, spent Sunday with W. D. DOTSON and family. Mrs. W. D. DOTSON visited the family of J. R. MOORE at Poplar Grove Wednesday. We are glad to welcome Walter MOORE and family to our midst. CHESTNUT BLUFF -- We are proud of our fine school, under the management of Miss Cynthia AVERY. William PERRY has been very sick with pneumonia. J. W. ALLEY has moved to Blytheville, Ark. Bob SMITH has moved to Halls, also James AUGUS. Mr. & Mrs. Francis, of Friendship, lost their little babe a few days ago with whooping cough. Henry ROBINSON was kicked by a mule sometime ago and is walking on crutches as his knee is badly fractured. FROZE TO DEATH -- Cordeus D. POGUE, a farmer, aged 35, who lived on the DAUGHTERTY place near Elbridge, was found dead Sunday morning in the road not far from the residence of Lem PERDUE. POGUE arrived in Obion Saturday afternoon from a trip to Kentucky, his old home, and, though it had been raining torrents, he told friends he was going to walk home, , a distance of over 12 miles, as no conveyance being available. Rice PIERCE, who knew POGUE well, offered him a bed here and tried to prevent him from leaving town. At eleven o'clock POGUE arrived at the farm of PERDUE covered with mud and asked for shelter. The family was alarmed and refused to admit him. He came back about 1 o'clock and was refused again. The next morning the body was found in the road covered with frozen mud from head to toe. He leaves a wife and two children. He first came from Kentucky to Obion County about 16 years ago, then went away and returned 4 years ago. Obion Enterprise. ROUTE #8 -- Miss Mollie HILLARD was the guest Thursday of her sister, Mrs. Fannie PALMER. Mr. & Mrs. ASBRIDGE's baby is very sick. Sam DOLAN and family have moved near Dyersburg, and will be missed in this community. RoELLEN -- The little son of J. M. PARKS was brought to RoELLEN for burial last week. We regret to say James COOLEY is very low with pneumonia. Tom WHITE and Ernest COOLEY, two business boys of RoELLEN, went to Dyersburg Wednesday. Richard WHITE of Halls, who is here visiting his uncle, is real sick. Miss Annie Beck PRICHARD is visiting in Dyersburg this week, guest of her brother. NEWBERN -- Miss Mabel SWINDLER, who recently visited in Cairo, is at home again. Mrs. Charlie McKNIGHT is at home, after visiting in Dyersburg. Editor Glass and wife visited Editor HAND and wife in Trimble last week. Mrs. W. M. BIFFLE of the Maple Leaf Place died last Tuesday and was buried at the City Cemetery Thursday. Mrs. Jeff SWINDLER has as visitors, the Misses SWINDLER, of Dawson, Ky. Hamilton PARKS, Jr. III, of Trimble and Guy HASKINS, of Newbern, visited Memphis Sunday. Miss Elise AYDELOTTE of Memphis is visiting Miss Linnie ATKINS. Robert GRISHAM, of Ardmore, I. T., is a welcome visitor in town. FINLEY -- Miss Nell LITTLE left for Martin Friday, where she will attend school. John HICKS moved his family to Martin last Friday. Mrs. Vic BROWN met with a serious accident last Friday. She started to throw a pan of water out, her foot slipped and she fell and broke a limb. Mrs. MURLEY is visiting in Haywood County. LENOX -- Mrs. Eddie BUTLER of Mengelwood, is visiting friends and relatives while high water is up. Bob HUSTON has moved to his old homestead on the hillside.
