The Chattanooga Bridge Co. , was allowed $1, 723 for building bridge across Cypress creek near Newbern. W. B. LITTLE resigned as Road Commissioner in 10th district and T. H. PRICHARD elected to succeed him. W. F. JONES, J. C. RICHARDS and Henry HOLDER appointed committee to build bridge across Bostic slough, cost not to exceed $350. The Legislature was petitioned to permit increase of pay of road hands from 75 cents to $1. 50 per day. Motion to increase work of road hands from six to eight days. W. I. Tom HUDSON resigned as Road Commissioner in 5th district and Guy FUMBANKS elected to succeed him. W. J. TILMAN resigned as Justice of Peace. A motion was made and carried to petition Gov. PATTERSON to reappoint the present members of the County Election Commissioners, W. A. FOWKLES, Jr. , W. J. FLATT and J. L. SINCLAIR. BIG DAMAGE SUIT FILED; UNION CITY, TENN. -- Squire T. J. OGILVIE, through his counsel, F. W. MOORE and E. J. GREEN, has filed his declaration in his case against W. M. WILSON. It seems from the allegations of the declarations Obion County, in 1898, made an appropriation of $5000 for the purpose of building a levee across the Obion bottom, a commission was appointed to oversee the fund to build the levee, Mr. OGILVIE was one of that commission appointed by the court. Mr. WILSON is charged in the declaration with having said and circulated the report that Mr. Ogilvie used and misappropriated some of this fund to his own use, to use the words that WILSON is charged with having said, "Stole the funds. " Also in 1903, the county court again appropriated another fund for the purpose of building a steel bridge across a creek between Obion and Glass, again Mr. OGILVIE was on the commission and he charges that W. M. WILSON again has stated to numerous and divers persons that OGILVIE has stolen a portion of this fund. This is the basis of the action for slander is brought, and Mr. OGILVIE sues W. M. HANGED FOR MURDER:KNOXVILLE, TENN. , JAN. 11--John THOMAS, colored, who waylaid and killed Ernest PERKINS, colored, near Straw Plains, last July, was hanged in the Knox County jail this afternoon. MAIL HANDLED BY NEGRO:HOPKINSVILLE, KY. , JAN. 11--Rural Route #2, from Cerulean Springs in Trigg County, has been discontinued because patrons of the line were unwilling for a negro to handle the mail. The carrier was W. L. GEORGE, colored, who was appointed last April, when C. S. AUSTIN, a white man, ceased to carry the mail. The route was established last year, and after several white men had been carriers, GEORGE was given the place. The patrons protested but authorities in Washington paid no attention. No threats were made against the negro, patrons of the line took down their mailboxes, and go to the Springs for their mail. The negro found himself without a job. LOCALS -- Dr. L. HARRISON is confined to his bed on account of illness. W. R. HARRISON, of Memphis is attending the bedside of his father. Mrs. W. W. MOORE of Union City is attending the bedside of her father, Dr. L. HARRISON. Mrs. Mollie BELL was given judgement in the United States Court in Memphis, against the ICR for $1, 500 for injuries sustained about a year ago. John FIELDS has been very sick at his home for the past week. Miss Nell MORRIS, of Fulton, Ky. , is the guest of Miss Eunice MEADOWS. Mr. & Mrs. Booth FOWKLES are the proud parents of a fine boy. Dr. C. E. SHACKELFORD, formerly of this city but now a resident of Ardmore, Okla. , has been elected to the office of city physician. Mr. & Mrs. George FERGUSON are the proud parents of a pretty girl baby. Mrs. Clifford JOYNER, of Union City, returned to her home after a week's visit to Miss Annie DANIEL. Jim WELLS left yesterday for the Panama Canal, where he accepts a position in helping Uncle Sam building the big canal. Capt. B. C. BURGIE and wife and daughter, Lalla, left yesterday for points in Calif. They will be absent about four months. DEATH OF MAURICE STEVENS -- William Maurice, the seven-year-old son of Mr. & Mrs. Robert A. STEVENS, past away last Thursday about 10 p. m. The little fellow passed through a severe illness and was thought improving when death came. Maurice was the second oldest of four boys, much loved. Rev. Geo. P. SCOTT conducted the services at the residence and the little body was interred in the City Cemetery Saturday. NEWBERN -- Dr. Frank PARKS, of Halls, visited Dr. WYATT, of Newbern, Sunday. Pat HOOPER is home after visiting his old hometown of Dickson, Tennessee. F. A. DUNNIVANT, formerly of Newbern, now living in Decaturville, visited friends here this week. Marshall McCONNELL, of Okla. , was in town last week visiting his father, who has been quite ill. Hamilton PARKS of Trimble, is visiting his family, B. R. PARKS, at this place. Mrs. MULLIN visited her parents, Mr. & Mrs. G. GRISHAM last week. ROELLEN -- Miss Stella LAUGHTON, who has been a visitor here for several months has returned home in Paducah. Miss Bugg CALLAHAN was a visitor in Dyersburg, guest of Mrs. Fred CALLAHAN. George SYMONDS, of Evansville, Indiana and Add AYERS, of Newbern were visiting our midst last week. Fred CALLAHAN and wife left last Monday for their new home in Dyersburg. Milton KETCHUM is slowly recovering with pneumonia. James SPURRS died at his home south of RoELlen, of pneumonia last Thursday and was buried at McCullough's Chapel. ROUTE #3 -- Miss Mollie HILLARD is visiting her sister, Mrs. Fannie PALMER. Mr. & Mrs. Frank PRUITT are the proud parents of a ten-pound girl. Mr. & Mrs. John PALMER were the guests of W. W. TANSIL's folks Saturday. Miss Clara TANSIL has returned to her home in Lenox, after a week's stay with her sister, Mrs. Ola PALMER. ROUTE #4 -- Mr. & Mrs. V. T. SIMMONS and C. N. JOHNSON have just returned from an extended visit to Madison County. Miss Clara GILLIS has returned home after a visit with her aunt, Mrs. G. W. JAMES at Dyersburg. BAND MILL -- Miss Nettie SHOLTS, of Ky., is visiting her sister, Mrs. HORTON this week. We are glad to welcomb B. W. HICKS and family to our midst. He occupies the house formally occupied by J. N. NORRIS. DYER COLLEGE -- John NUNN has bought the Emmitt CLARK home and will move immediately. Emmitt CLARK and family will move to Memphis. R. A. BELL has sold his farm to his brother, D. BELL and bought W. BIGG's place now occupied by J. SMITH. FINLEY -- Mrs. Henry ASKEW, after having been ill for several days, died Thursday night. Her husband and little son have our sympathy. Dr. Luther Edwards is able to be up again after a severe wound from a stroke of a horse. Dr. MOODY has moved to Finley, we are glad to have him in our midst. End January 17, 1907 issue.
