STATE GAZETTE MRS. P L SHOFNER DEAD AT NEWBERN--Mrs. P L SHOFNER died at her home in Newbern Thursday, after a long illness. She underwent an operation in a Dyersburg hospital several weeks ago in the hope of restoring her health. She was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and a splendid Christian woman. She is survived by her husband and two sons, W S SHOFNER of Newbern, and A E SHOFNER of East St. Louis. Funeral services were held this morning at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church by Rev. C W HAYES. Interment was at Poplar Grove. METHODIST CONFERENCE NOW IN SESSION IN RIPLEY, NOVEMBER 15 MEETING--saddened By the death of Dr. H B JOHNSTON (Henry Bascom), aged 62, pastor of the first Church of Lexington, (large hole in paper) four children, George the only name could read. Burial in Ripley. DELPHOS--The record at Rehoboth was broken last Sunday, the last service before conference. S D HOLLAND is usually expected to make his annual speach on the last service in beholf of the pastor's salary, but he was joyously being entertained in Blytheville at his two sons, Judge Garner and Aaron, the latter to get married to a city maid. This closes D A 's last single one of ten living. Ben BROWN has built a barn for Jim COOLEY and now one for Lem STREET. Pate HURLEY is putting up a small barn and Joe ROBBINS, a smokehouse. Lex MILAN has built a tenant house. Our old faithful carpenter, Joe WILSON who went to the I. O. O. F. home for the aged, has been taken for a visit to Mississippi to see Arthur WARD and while there, punctured his foot with a nail and is having a serious time. Dan FEATHERSTONE will soon make his third trip to Tampa, Fla. Steve LIGHT, a Gibson County citizen, but a lover of Dyer, has sold his farm and will likely gine us again. NAUVOO--W J HUFFINE has been sowing some wheat. Mrs. Lexie CRANFORD, of Nerbern, spent last week with her mother, Mrs. SHELTON. Mrs. W E McGUIRE has been suffering from a very sore throat. Miss Margaret STURDEVANT, of Bonicord, spent Saturday night with Misses Erma & Dixie COBB. Mrs. A S FINCH went to Bardwell, KY Saturday to visit her sister, Mrs. Parker MOORE. She was accompanied by Mrs. W L HENDREN of Ro-Ellwn. James PAYNE is reported some better at this writing. Little Mabel Clare HENDREN of Ro-Ellen, has been visiting her grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. J A PLYES, for the past two weeks. Mrs. Joe CANADA of Tigrett, visited her aunt, Mrs. W E McGUIRE, last week. J F GAMBILL and W H CANADA of Unionville were guests of Ed COOPER and family Sat. & Sun. Mrs. Priest ROBINSON was real sick last week and is still confined to her room. LISBON--Bud McCORKLE, a former resident of Yorkville, who has been out west for the past six years, came through here Wednesday, calling on relatives. He was during the time spent in the West, worked in 10 or 11 states, and has been a guard in over 20 insane asylums. He gives as his experience that there are one-third more insane men than women in these institutions. Mrs. Bettie HUNDLEY is having a new home erected on her farm near here. Relatives here received a message Friday telling of the marriage of Miss Madie HALL of Memphis to Mr. William MOORE. Miss HALL was reared in the Tatumville area. Sam SALE & Douglas WILKERSON sold a nice load of hogs last week to Lyle LOGAN. Mr. & Mrs. J H POPE spent one night with relatives in Nebouville. Mr. & Mrs. Walker FLOWERS of Palestine, spent Saturday night with his brother, George, of this community. Mr. & Mrs. G R McCORKLE and children of Churchton, were Sunday guests of Mr. & Mrs. J H POPE. Murray HUIE's new home near Yorkville, is nearing completion. Finis COLE of Dyersburg was in the home of his sister, Mrs. Sam JONES Sunday. Dr. LeRoy HOLLAND of Dyersburg was in the home of Mrs. Callie CAWTHORN Sunday and extracted her teeth. Mrs. E P POPE, Sr. , left Wednesday morning for Memphis to spend a few weeks with her daughters, Mrs. W O SPEIGHT and Mrs. Herbert WEBB. FORT HUDSON--Julia HOOPER and brother, Joe, spent last week in Obion with their grandmother. Miss Iown SWINK of Rutherford, has returned to her home after a few days stay with her aunt, Mrs. Susie DIAL. Harbert DUNNIVANT has moved to Dyersburg and is now at work at the Star Motor Co. Buford HENSLEY of Dyer, is spending several days here with friends. Otis WEST, of Newbern, was a visitor in Fort Hudson Monday. Harbert DUNNIVANT and Ed JUSLER of Dyersburg, made a pleasant call at the DOSS home Friday night. Mr. & Mrs. Murray DODDS shopped in Dyersburg Monday. Dixie DOSS spent the weekend in Dyersburg with her aunt, Mrs. J D MITCHELL. Mr. SMOTHERS and family are expecting to move to Middle Tennessee next year. CLE__ CREEK FARM--Mrs. Murray DODDS, who has been quite sick, is able to be out again. J W POPE of Neboville has been a visitor in this community since our last writing. Miss Jessie SWINK is visiting her cousin, Miss Alice DIAL. A L McCORKLE has arrived in Tennessee to be the guest of relatives for a few weeks. He has not been here in six years, and during the time has traveled over every state west of the Mississippi River except Louisiana. Mrs. S E DIAL and family are soon to move to Dyersburg. Clarence MILLSAP and Miss Sarah PILLOW were married last Saturday night in Dyersburg. Mr. & Mrs. Ben OWEN & Mrs. Joe OWEN were in Dyersburg Saturday. Mr. & Mrs. T A ARNOLD and baby, Joseph, and Kathleen STANLEY visited in Neboville Saturday night and Sunday. J S RADFORD, a hardware merchant of Newbern, was in Memphis Tuesday buying wagons. John PILLOW will leave this week to join his family in Paducah, Ky. Mrs. Will CRIDER has been suffering with neuralgia of the teeth. News has been received here of the marriage of Miss Mada HALL of Memphis. The name of the groom has not been learned. Little Elizabeth HOOPER has been real sick with whooping cough. Miss Iva HURST spent last Wednesday night with Miss Mabel ARNOLD and Kathleen STANLEY. UNIONVILLE--Miss Erlene MEADOWS, of this place, spent the week-end with her sister, Mrs. Velma McDOUGLE of Finley. Eugene & B. MOORE spent last weekend with home folks here. They are attending school at Martin this year. J T VIAR and family of Heloise, spent Sunday in the home of J L GREER. Willie GREER returned with them Sunday evening to spend a few days. Clarence GEAN and Miss Rachel GILMAN gave this community a shock, when they drove to Double Bridges Monday and were married. Mr. GEAN is from near Blytheville, Ark. , and Miss GILMAN was in school here. J L GREER and sons, James & Abram, went to Ayers Saturday for a few days stay. The stork has visited three homes in this community since the last writing, leaving in each home a girl; Mr. & Mrs. Hardie MANUEL, Mr. & Mrs. Joe BORUM and Mrs. Gladys BORUM. Sue McKAIN had the misfortune to fall and hurt her ankle, she is not able to walk yet. Mr. & Mrs. Ernest RALPH, of Union City, are visiting the latter's parents, Mr. & Mrs. W D DODSON of this place. LOCAL AND PERSONAL--Asa MAGEE is confined to his home with illness. Mary Frances FOWKLES is confined to her home with tonsilitis. Mrs. W L FOWKLES and Roy FOWKLES are visiting in Tigrett this week. Harry WAGGONER, who has been very sick the past week, is improved. Mr. & Mrs. J A NORMENT and son of Fulton, are guests of relatives. Mrs. W E DAVIS left last night for Winter Haven Fla. , to spend the winter. Tom FOWKLES and Henry FOWKLES have been made assistant cashiers at the Citizens Bank. Mrs. S E GROUT of Florala, Ala. , arrived this week to visit her parents, Mr. & Mrs. T L WELLS. Mr. & Mrs. Chas. BURCHARD of Union City motored here Sunday guests of Mr. & Mrs. Hal CRAIG. Mr. & Mrs. J B CARPENTER have purchased the Ginsburg residence on St. John Ave. and will take charge Jan. 1st. Mr. & Mrs. Hamner SCOTT and Miss Mattie JOHNSTON were called to Ripley on account of the death of Dr. H B JOHNSTON. Mr. & Mrs. George TICKLE of Dyersburg visited their daughter, Mrs. Fleming HODGES, in Tirgrett Sunday. Mr. & Mrs. Otha FOWKLES have moved back to their home on West McGAUGHEY Street. Mrs. Chas. MOSS and daughter Mildred left Thursday for Franklin, KY to visit relatives till after Thanksgiving. Chas. Dougles MOSS will go later. News was received this morning of the birth of a son to Mr. & Mrs. M D CLUBB, Jr. , in New Haven. The young man has been named William Graham CLUBB. He is the grandson of Rev. & Mrs. W D CLUBB of this city. Mrs. Mildred PENCE entertained Tuesday evening at her home on Troy Ave. in honor of her sisters, Mrs. O'BRIEN and Mrs. WILLIAMS, of Jackson, Mich. Dr. H B JOHNSTON BURIED AT RIPLEY--The funeral of Dr. JOHNSTON was as impressive and touching as to bring tears from more than half of the congregation. The rostum was hidden beneath the wealth of wreaths, inwhich chrysanthemums predominated heavily. Bishop MOUZON & Dr. L H ESTES, president and secretary of the conference respectively, in the work for which Dr. JOHNSTON had laid down his life, led to the procession which carried the casket into the church. Four of Dr. JOHNSTON's class mates: Revs. S L JEWELL, W J McCOY, R H PIQUE & W W ADAMS were the honorary pall bearers, and seven other lay and ministerial companions were active as pallbearers, namely: Ernest RICE, Prof. G L MORELOCK, A J BARBEE, Dr. SEVIER, Sam J HUBBARD, J L RICHARDSON & George WILKERSON. The Rev. R W HOOD & Rev. W D JENKINS read the Scriptures over the body of theie comrade and the Rev. J J THOMAS led in a fervent prayer that again set the congregation to crying. Rev. J E BLACHARD & Rev. W W ADAMS eulogized in brief talks of his life, and works of the departed. Dr. BLACHARD said he had been closely associated for 38 years with Dr. Henry Bascom JOHNSTON, and that though the earthly home of his soul may be gone, H B JOHNSTON will live forever, on earth as in heaven. The burial was made in Ripley Cemetery, following the service at the church. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Hamner SCOTT of Dyersburg, Miss Mattie JOHNSTON, and two sons, George & Irwin JOHNSTON of Memphis. AUDITORS REPORT SHORTAGE IN W H ANDERSON'S ACCOUNTS WITH COUNTY--M O CARTER & his assistants, public accountants, who have been auditing the books of Dyer Counties officials, have made a report to County Judge C F SUGG, showing their findings on the accounts of W H ANDERSON, Circuit Court Clerk for four years ending August 31, 1922. The report shows, according to their statement, an apparent shortage of $6, 056. 22. Of this amount, two sums, $563. 75 and $898. 87, are subject to further proff. Mr. ANDERSON's bondsmen are T C GORDON, Dave BELL, Chas. STTUTS(deceased), George WELLS and John NICHOLS. We understand Mr. ANDERSON is turning over his property to the bondsmen in order to protect the bondsmen. BATTERY STATION CHANGES HANDS--W E DAVIS has sold his battery station on East Court Street to Wade CRAIG. Exell BRYANT, who has been with Mr. DAVIS since he took charge will continue with Mr. CRAIG. SURPRISE KITCHEN SHOWER--Quite a surprise was given Monday night at seven-thirty to Rev. & Mrs. A L DICKERSON, when the Senior Epworth League entertained them with a kitchen shower at the home of Dr. & Mrs. G B BROWN. LAKE COUNTY MAN RECEIVES PARDON--Gov. TAYLOR has issued a pardon to Will McCLAIN of Lake County, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1916 unpo conviction of murder in the first degree. He had claimed self-defense at the trial. IN COUNTY COURT SY DYERSBURG, TENNESSEE--To all persons interested in the Estate of W A FOWKLES, Deceased: You are hereby notified that on the 6th of December 1922, I will file a report of all claims filed against the estate aforesaid. Witness my hand this the 10th day of November, 1922. HURRICANE HILL--A few men came to see Mr. HUTCHISON Sunday. They learned he had purchased him a Dodge and thought they had better come and see him. Mrs. Belle McGINNIS of Vienna, Ill. , and Mrs. Naomi HANELINE of Stonefort, Ill. , who have been visiting their daughter and sister, Mrs. Myrtle HUTCHISON, have returned home after two weeks visit. Mrs. HUTCHISON's family happened to a very painful accident, while not very serious, as the family was going down the hill in front of their house the wagon almost turned over, throwing two children out of the wagon, the wheel running over the girl's face. Rodney TATE also fell out of the wagon and it ran over his chest. Mrs. Jettie TUCKER and family have been visiting Mrs. Syd MIDDLETON and family. Joe CANADA and family of Tigrett has been visiting Mrs. Lillie MIDDLETON here. FREEMAN'S CHAPEL--Miss Lillie DAVIS from Lenox, was the guest of Miss Nettie ODOM last Sunday. Ernest ODOM of Cool Springs spent a few days here. Mr. & Mrs. George ODOM and son spent Saturday night with Mr. & Mrs. Gabe McCULLOUGH at Meachum. J C MURFRESS of Mason Hall, was the guest of Mr. & Mrs. D A FREEMAN last Sat. night. Mr. & Mrs. Will ODOM and little son, Everett Marr, were guests of Mr. & Mrs. George ODOM last Sunday. Mr. & Mrs. Van WATKINS & Lillie HARDING and children are in Missouri this week. Death has again slipped into our community and claimed for it's victim the little daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Leroy RUMLEY. She had been a sufferer for several weeks. She was laid to rest in the Hurricane Hill Cemetery. BOGOTA--Kent GOAD and wife have a new girl baby. Miss Grace BLEDSOE went to Fowkles Sunday to begin her school. John GIFFORD was called to Memphis Sunday to attend the funeral of his brother, Will GIFFORD. Cullie HOWARD got his arm broken one day last week while cranking a car for Mr. BATES. FINLEY--Mrs. Dave ROBERTSON of this place, was carried to the hospital Oct. 11, for a serious operation, and has been very low. Garrett MOODY of Tiger Tail, was out here early this morning for Dr. FREEMAN. I suppose someone was very ill as he was traveling swiftly. Mrs. Bert SAVAGE has been sick for two weeks with malarial fever. Sam HOPKINS and Maddie HUBBARD were married last Sunday. The little daughter, Georgia Helen, of Mr. & Mrs. George HARDWICK is very low with pneumonia. Their home is at Heloise on the Mississippi River, but the parents have the baby at the mother's uncle's place, Charlie Hart, in order to be closer to a doctor.
