STATE GAZETTE DYERSBURG,TENNESSEE VOLUME 8 NO.89 OCTOBER 4,1873 RIPLEY COURT NEWS--The Lauderdale County Circuit Court was
in session last week,and the following are some of the important cases that
were tried; The case of the State vs John LANE,for murder,was continued
till next term,and the probabilty is he will await it in the Memphis jail. The case of the State vs CALDWELL,for horse stealing,was
also continued,and his bond fixed at $1500,which he will probably give. A negro was tried for rape on a white woman and received a
verdict of 30 years in the penitentiary. CALDWELL,the horsethief,says it was all for love.His girl
said she wouldn't marry hin unless he had some money--and he took the horse to
raise the necessary lucre. DR.Wm.PARKS,OF YORKVILLE--Brother of Rev.H.PARKS and
Mr.Smith PARKS,of Newbern,died last Monday,in his 73rd year.He was a pioneer of
Dyer County,and had been for many years an efficiant Elder in the Cumberland
Presbyterian Church. THE "BUGLE" IS THE NAME of a new paper started at
Newbern by Mr.George WEAR.It is a good looking seven column paper,and
"Democrat to the hilt." We wish Mr.WEAR and the Bugle a long life and
a profitable career. D.J.BEADLES ATTEMPTED TO COMMITT SUICIDE at Newbern,on
Saturday,by drinking 2 1/2 ounce of laudanum.But by the prompt and efficiant
aid of Drs.HASKINS & HARRELL,his life was saved.This is the second attempt
at suicide by Mr.BEADLES,in the last two weeks. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE--The Dyersburg Chamber of Commerce,brought
into existence by our absent Editor,has effected a permanent organization by
the election of the following officers: R.G.STEVENS,President;
J.L.WEBB,Vice-president; Wm.HARRISON,Secretary; H.P.DOYLE,as assistant
secretary; and J.E.ROBERTS,Tr'er. MAJOR R.A.W.JAMES is the happiest man in town now,in
consequence of the arrival of an 11 pound boy at his home last Thursday
morning. WE LEARN FROM THE ALAMO SENTINEL of the 19th inst.,that a
caucus of over 200 negroes were lately seen in the bottom,near that place,at
the dead hour of night,holding a meeting.The Sentinel asks: What does it all
mean? MR.FRED MILLER LEFT US a few days ago for Cincinnati,where
he will attend a commercial college. TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF--Messrs ROBERTS & LUSCOMBE wish
it distinctly understood that,after the first of October,1873,they will sell
goods for cash only and intend to sell grocries cheap. OUR HANDSOME YOUNG FRIEND Mr.Frank ARMSTRONG,of Sugg &
Co.,is one of the best,livest and attentive salesman in Dyersburg. DIED--In Dyersburg,September 17,1873,Nellie,infant daughter
of J.A.& Ella HUMES,aged nine months and three days. "Sleep on dear
Nellie,thou hast gone to rest, Thy span of life,tho' short,was blest;
Autumn,with her dewy fingers cold, Will deck thy hallowed mould-By Fairy
hands,they knew is rung,By forms unseen,thy dirge is sung." DIED--In Dyer County,September 1873,in the 2nd year of his
age,Wattie,only child of W.H.& Sallie A.PATE. YELLOW FEVER--New Orleans,September 29.The Picayupe's
specials from Branham and Byran,Texas,report panics from the apprehension of
fever which has broken out in Calvert.Physicians pronounce it Yellow Fever. SHREVEPORT--SEPTEMBER 29.Within the last four days several
of the most prominent and useful citizens from Shreveport have fallen victims
to the epidemic.The population has been fearfully thinned out by sickness and
death.Drs.CHAFFIN,BRUMS and DAVIDSON are here from New Orleans. ARKANSAS--LITTLE ROCK,SEPTEMBER 29.There was another change
in Arkansas politics to-day.The Attorney General dismissed his suit in Circuit
Court against Governor BAXTER. DISSOLUTION--The partnership heretofore existing between us
in this day dissolved by mutual consent.Mr.ADAMS will finish the carpentry
contracts on which we are now engaged,and will aettle up the business of the
firm.All parties indebted to the late firm of TURNER & ADAMS will save cost
by settling in sixty days,all parties holding claims against them will present
them to David ADAMS for settlement in sixty days.October 1,1873-m1. JOHN C.BROWN,GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE--To all who
shall see these Presents,Greeting: Whereas,It has been made known to me that
certain unknown parties charged with having committed a foul and atrocious
assault and battery,on the 22nd day of July,1873,upon the body of
Wm.HORTON,colored,late of our county of Dyer.have fled from justice,and are now
running at large: NOW,THEREFORE,I,John C.BROWN,Governor aforesaid,by virture of
the power and authority in me vested,do hereby offer a Reward of Two Hundred and
Fifty Dollars($250),to any person or persons who may detect,apprehend and
convict the said unknown parties,and deliver them or anyone of them to the
Sheriff or Jailor of our county of Dyer,in order that justice in that behalf
may be had and executed.IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF,I have hereunto set my hand and
caused the Great Seal of the State to be affixed,at Nashville,on the 5th day of

CHILDRESS. GOV.SAM BARD has begun to issue the Atlanta New Era as a
"courteous and dignified weekly." THE LAST INSTANCE of lighting fire with
kerosene,Mrs.DAVIS,of College Grove,Tenn.Usual result. THE WIFE OF REV.MR.WISWELL,of St.John's Chapel,N.Y.,has sued
her husband for a portion of her property,which he has converted to his own
use.She is the daughter of the late Bishop BERRIAN,of Trinity Church,and was
worth $70,000 when she married,and charges WISWELL with robbery and infidelity. N.C.WHITE is now receiving his Fall and Winter stock of Dry
Goods. PUBLIC DEBATE--There will be a public debate at Lower Hills
Church tonight at 7 o'clock:Subject-"Resolved that the kingdom of Jesus
Christ was set-up,in complete organization,during his ministry upon
earth." Affirmative-T.B.P.TIPTON. Negative-T.W.JAMES.All are invited to
attend. MARRIAGE LICENSES--The following are the marriage licenses
issued by our County Court Clerk,since our last report:P.W.HART to
M.A.THURMOND; J.N.THURMOND to E.JOHNSON; E.D.CUMMINGS to M.A.CUMMINGS;
J.W.MORRIS to Miss A.J.KING. CHARLIE WHITE,the gallant proprieter of White's Opera House
at Memphis,has now got his theatre in full blast with an entire new troupe. "A THING OF BEAUTY IS A JOY FOREVER" and so are
the pictures taken by Mayor PINNER,at his Dyersburg photograph gallery. Mr.J.A.HUMES FELL DEAD upon the street,on the 22nd inst.,of
hemorrage of the lungs. THE STEAMER,EUREKA,is now going through a thorough
overhauling under the skillful hands of Capt.FLETCHER. MESSRS.BAYLEY & BUSH have our thanks for late periodical
favors. THE CIRCUS--The Louisville Courier Journel has this to say
about the Great International Menagerie Muesum,Aquarium and Circus,which will
exhibit at Dyersburg,October 14th,1873.The day's festivities began with grand
gratuitious street display,which was grandeur itself,and was witnessed by
crowds od spectators.At least 1,500 rare wild animals and remarkable
curiosities are to be seen,etc. IN CHANCERY AT DYERSBURG--In Term Time,September 6,1873.
W.M.WATKINS versus J.H.BROCK,et als. On motion,and it appearing by Bill,which
is sworn to,that both defendants,J.H.BROCK and J.A.ASHLIN,have absconded from
the State of Tennessee.It is therefore ordered that publication be made for
four successive weeks in "Neal's State Gazette," requiring said
defendants to appear befroe the next term in Chancery Court,to be held for Dyer
County at the Courthouse in Dyersburg,on the 3rd Monday in October next,and plead,answer
or demur to Complainant's Bill,or the same will be taken for confessed and set

from the Honorable Circuit Court of Dyer County,Tenn.,against Richard
STAGGS-one in favor of John S.WILLIAMS,and the other in favor of E.B.CURTIS; I
will sell to the highest bidder,for cash in hand at the Courthouse door in
Dyersburg,Tennessee,on the First Monday in October 1873,The following described
Tract of Land,situated in the Second Civil District of Dyer
County,Tenn.,bounded as follows,to-wit; Beginning at the Ironwood,at the
South-west corner;thence East 144 poles,to a stake with two Oaks and a poplar
pointer;thence North 187 poles to a stake and pointers;thence West to double
Ironwood 144 poles;thence South 187 poles to the beginning.Sale at 1 o'clock
p.m. August 3,1873.
