McDOWELL IN DYER COUNTY--Hon. John Hu. McDOWELL is announced to speak in Dyer County to day, at Pleasant Hill. The democracy of the county has twice elected Mr. McDOWELL for State senator, and we wish him to tell us whether he intends to fight that democracy.

THE DEATH OF MRS.POLK--Mrs.James K POLK died Friday, August 14, 1891.

YES, LIFE IS WORTH THE LIVING--Little George HENRY, one of the best and brightest boys in Dyer County, has our thanks for a nice big baskett full of nice grapes.The boy who remembers the Editor, is the hope of his country. Dennis GRANVILLE, one of our colored subscribers, who has read the State Gazette for many years, presented us a fine big watermelon the other day. He does this every year and we wish to thank Dennis for his kindess. The other day, Mrs. Annie BRACKIN sent us two big loaves of light bread, smoking hot and as white as the driven snow. Thanks.

INDUSTRIAL NOTES--The Stevens Lumber Company of Dyersburg, is shipping lumber to Germany direct, also to London. Miles DAVIS is building a residence in Dyersburg at the old nursery. D A GARDNER is bossing the job. L M MITCHELL is building a new house on his principality along the Mississippi river, and Lee WALKER is the contractor.

LOCAL ITEMS--Dr.DUFFEY has sold his residence to Mr. Jeff BURGIE. High Sheriff Jo. TURNEY of Nashville, dropped down Wednesday and escorted Mack MURPHEY, Felix ROBERTSON and A G WILSON to the penitentiery; the former goes for three years, the others four years each. Mr. Jas. McCLERKIN died in Dyersburg last Wednesday at the residence of his son, Tom. Mr. McCLERKIN came recently from Henderson County where he lived for many years. He was the father of our fellow townsmen, Luther & Jim McCLERKIN. Mr. Wiley SIMPSON died at Princeton, Ky., last Friday and was buried at this place last Sunday. For many years he was a successful merchant at Dyersburg. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his loss.

PERSONAL MENTION--Miss Pearl THOMPSON, of Trenton, is visiting Miss Maud LOVE. Mrs. Theo KING has returned fron her summer pleasure trip. Miss Mollie RICHARDSON, of Ripley, is visiting Mrs. Myra SUMMERS. Bob MARTIN, of Nashville, has been visiting Dyersburg this week. Mrs. WILDING leaves today for a visit to relatives in Gibson county. Mrs. George SCOTT is the proud father of a new baby boy, born last Monday. Mrs. Dr. MILLEN will leave today for a week's recreation at Kingston Springs. Miss Mollie PIERCE will open her Kindergarden school at the College on the 31st of this month. Rev. W F HAMNER will preach his farewell sermon in Dyersburg tomorrow at the Methodist church. Mrs. L L SWEARENGEN and Mrs. Lucy SWEARENGEN, of Mississippi, are visiting Capt. Jim SWEARENGEN and wife and Mrs.Frank LUSCOMBE. Mrs. F H HOWELL has returned from a long visit to Friendship, improved in health and Miss Delia DAVIS, of Crockett Co., is visiting her. Lawyer D B JOHNSON made such a good special Judge, that the bar presented him a handsome silver service. T K REYNOLDS did the presentation act. Mr. T J CLARK, the effecient secretary, John E RANDLE's Chickasaw Iron Works, at Memphis, was in Dyersburg yesterday and went away happy. Rev. H C JOHNSON, who is to succeed to the Methodist pulpit in Dyersburg is here. Mr. Wellington ETHERIDGE, of the Spoke Co., is now in Dyersburg to stay and keep Mr. BROCK in good spirits. The young folks had a moonlight picnic at Miss Patty LIGHT's last Thursday night. Lawyer Caz GOODLOE, of Alamo, is visiting friends here. Carolyn Gerster NEAL last Tuesday celebrated her 6th birthday with a party of little friends. Jackson Whig: Lonnie BURKE, who has been out of town the past two or three months, has returned and is again behind the prescription case at Hamner's.His brother, Charlie BURKE, of Dyersburg, spent Sunday in the city with him. Ripley Enterprise: Miss Lillie NEAL, the daughter of Col. Tom NEAL, of Dyersburg and her guest, Miss Julie SCOTT, of Paducah, Ky., are in the city to visit their friend, Miss Eddie Sue Holloway. Brownsville States Democrat: Mrs. W F HAMNER is visiting her brothers, Messrs. R E & W A TAYLOR for a few weeks, before going to her new home at Roanoke, Va., where Mr. HAMNER has been stationed as pastor by Bishop HENDRIX.

FROM TRIMBLE--Sheriff W G DYER was in town last week on business. Oscar WAGNER, John DOERR and Misses Maggie & Kate WICKERSHAM, of Dyersburg, made a flying trip to out town last Sunday in one of BURKE's fine turnouts. Mrs. E E PARKS and sister, Minnie PIERCE, have just returned from a trip to Old Point Comfort. Kelly thinks it is more comfort to him for Miss Minnie to be here at Trimble. There were three deaths in our little town since my last writing. Mr. John BIGGARD lost a little daughter five years old; Mr. SWINKS' a daughter about 13 years old and Marvel NEEDHAM's little boy, 20 months old. Ollie PIERCE has bought himself a fine cart and harness. Aunt Sallie MOORE is so well pleased with the improvement the painting made on her house, that she herself looks ten years younger.

SHE PLAYED MAN--Alamo Sentinel: Three or four weeks ago we published a notice of a man-woman being brought here from Friendship and lodged in jail for forging an order for goods, with Mr. Elijah HAWKINS name signed to it. During his-hers confinement in jail, quite a number of persons have visited him-her, and all believed him to be a her, but as he or she had on male attire they thought they might be mistaken. Judge BOND ordered the sheriff to have him-her examined, and proving he was a she, named Agnes RANKIN, but she has heretofore known here as Sam RANKIN. Her mother and young brother arrived Monday from Halls Station.

FROM RABBIT HILL--Emmerson RAY and wife spent Sunday at Ro-Ellen. Jim CRIBBS, who has been sick, is able to visit friends. George PIERCE & T M PATE made us a brief visit Sunday. Reed CRIBBS and Coker PURCELL left Sunday for Texas to remain sometime. Misses Nanna HART and Rosa HALL of Crockett County, were the guests of Miss Laney HALL this week. Jeff PRICHARD has gone to Fulton, Ky., where he will assist his brother, Burrel in holding a protracted meeting.
