STATE GAZETTE CIRCUIT COURT--This Court is still in session at Dyersburg, Judge CARTHEL presiding. Under Judge McDOWELL last week, two railroad cases were tried; one against D. W. GAULDIN resulted in a hung jury and mistrial, the other against Kit HASKINS resulted in a verdict in favor of Child, Stevens & Company for one-half the amount claimed. Jim TURPIN's case was expected to be taken yesterday. The following cases have been disposed of: J. W. JONES, forfeiture, continued by consent; Winfield COCHRAN, gaming, nolle pros entered; J J SHELAN, carrying a pistol, fined $50; Jo SMITH, forfeiture, continued by consent; John COOK, Sam HAMMOND and Thomas SWARNER, carrying pistols, were declared not guilty; Jim & Miller HARRIS, larceny, not guilty; Chas STTUTS, distrubing public worship, fined $20; Will HOOPER, distrubing public worship, fined $20; Steve Ledbetter, distrubing public worship, retired; Geo LOVELADY, distrubing public worship, fined $20; I W CAWYER, assault & battery fined $50; John JONES, carrying pistol, retired from docket; D W GAULDEN et al, assault & battery, fined $10; Ed MALLORY, colored, carrying a pistol, fined $20 and sent to county jail for 20 days; J C LANE & M E STOWE, lewdness, nolle pros; John L FITZHUGH, murder, continued; Mrs. J M DAY vs Napolean McKNIGHT, verdict for defendant; R A YOUNG vs John CONNELL, dismissed; Peter RICHARD vs Robert BUGG, rule made on plaintiff for better security; Nancy STEVENSON vs W S MOORE, Judgement by consent; W P CRAIG vs David BELL, continued by consent; W P FOWKLES vs E P LADD, Judgement by default; A L & J C FUMBANKS vs H B FOWKLES, continued by consent; Willie BELL vs W T HARRIS, plaintiff dismissed his suit. LAWYER FRANK ROBERTS of Gayoso, MO was married on the 21st of last month to Miss Sallie CUNNINGHAM of Caruthersville, MO. Frank is a promising Dyersburgian, and we wish him and his bride a long happy and properose life. OREGAN, A LETTER FROM A DYER COUNTY MAN--Suisaw, Oregan January 1883 To the Editor State Gazette; (Many questions from friends prompted letter.) I will confine myself mainly to Western Oregan. In the first place, I will say I see a great many people here who say they are not satisfied with Oregan, I can say I am. Just the simple fact that I believe this is the healthiest state in the Union. The temperature is moderated in the hot as well as in the cold seasons by trade winds of the Pacific. The temperature seldom rises above 90 degrees and rarely falls below 20 degrees. It may be said indeed there are but two seasons in Oregan, namely; a wet and a dry one. Lawyer PARKS has been acting attorney general in the Circuit Court this week, he makes a good one. Mr. Henderson DAWSON and his sister Dixie, of Louisville, are visiting relatives in Dyer County. Mr. Ferd DAWSON was married to Miss Mary THURMOND last Wednesday night by Squire Wat SAMPSON. Judge Jo C GUILD, the famous Middle Tennessee lawyer, died suddenly at his home in Nashville, last Monday. Our friend, Mr. Charles I LOVE, of Ayers, paid us a pleasant visit the other day and subscribed for the State Gazette. Professor Walter DRAPER, after a few months experience in Colorado, has returned to Dyersburg and resumed the practice of law. Capt. Tom BUCHANAN's cotton gin, on the Mississippi river, caught fire last Saturday and was damaged to the amount of one hundred dollars. 'Squire Henderson CLARK, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Dyer county, is lying at the point of death at his home near Dyersburg. Miss Leila BRYANT, aged 13 years, was burnt to death by her clothing catching fire last Tuesday, while left alone at her home, near Harris' school house. Mr. David BELL's store house at Fowkles Station, together with all contents, was destroyed by fire early last Thursday morning. Slight insurance. Ripley News; Thanks to Col. Beverly THOMAS, Mayor of Dyersburg, will soon go to visit Florida. Captain Lewis WILLIAMS was Foreman of the Grand Jury and Moreau MICHELL its Clerk. It would be hard to find two men who could discharge duties more efficiently. The other day while hauling a big log up the tramway at Mack STEVENS'sawmill, the chain broke and away went both out into the depts of the Forked River. The mill suspended operations and all hands went to drag for the chain. RIPLEY NEWS--Misses SOLOMON, DOYLE, THOMAS and FORD, four of Dyersburg's interesting ladies, paid our town a visit during the Christmas holidays, guests of Mr. & Mrs. Sam CARSON during their stay. COUNTY NEWS FROM MAXVILLE--The sunday School at Lemaisamac was re-organized last Sunday with Judge Jno E McCORKLE, Superintendent and J M HALL, Assistant. D R HENDRICKS, one of our oldest citizens, has advertised his property for sale. He and his wife are almost ready to drop into the grave from age and afflictions, still he will sacrifice all to go west (Texas) in search of health, which he will never enjoy this side of eternity. How strange men will act. Wiley FROST's little girl fell down with a pot of coffee and scalded her leg and foot severely, but not dangerously. W G EDWARDS, formerly of Richwoods, lost his wife last Thursday. She had been afflicted with apoplexy for sometime. COUNTY NEWS FROM MILLER'S CHAPEL--We had a pleasant farwell address from our brother and friend, P S TAYLOR on Sunday; the last day of the year. It was a hard trial to give him up. A H WALKER killed and shipped pork to Ripley at 8 cts. Uncle Billy MOORE and son have given up the idea of moving to Arkansas. A M STEVENS is making things lively cutting poplar and hauling thro' mud and rain. A young man was accidently killed the other day in the woods. He was loading his gun with the breech on a log, when it slipped off emptying the charge into his lungs, from the effects of which he died that night. (no name given. ) RO-ELLEN NEWS--Miss Laura WALKER & Miss Maggie THOMAS opened school at this place on the first Monday in this month. Willie PAYNE had the misfortune to lose his fine mule, Noah, the other day. J D SWIFT commenced school at Esqr. HENDRIX's on the fitst Monday. Uncle Zeke HENDERSON is a little out of humor just now, can't guess the weather nor tell when spring will come, and says Easter Sunday comes on Monday this year sure, and when that is the case, a bad crop year comes. Also says the big storm will come between the 9th and 11th of March, and says he's going to start for his hole soon, as he is one-legged. A DYER COUNTY BOY MARRIES--We copy the following from the Peekskill, NY Democrat of October 21, 1882. The happy man alluded to is a brother of our fellow-townsman, "Squire Hick DOYLE: St. Peter's Espicopal Church was literally packed on Thursday afternoon last, despite the descending rain, by the most brilliant gathering of Peekskill's wealth, youth and beauty, perhaps ever seen within its walls, called together to witness the marriage ceremony of Miss Kate Amelia, eldest daughter of Dr. Thomas SNOWDEN, and Robert M. DOYLE of Tennessee, an ensign in the United States Navy.
