DYERSBURG, TENNESSEE

FIRE AT NEWBERN--Jacob HAMILTON's residence on Washington street burned last Thursday. The fire originated from a defective stove flu. The contents were nearly all saved. No insurance. The people contributed liberally to Mr. HAMILTON, who is a hard working man.

FROM STOKES--Mr. & Mrs. BILLS are on the sick list this week. Mr. Charley PHILLIPS killed some fine jersy pigs the other day that he bought of B F YOUNG. ROBERTS, DANIEL & Co. are putting up their heading machinery at Stokes. They will open up a big field for labor. Hon. J B DANIEL of Nashville, in company with his father, J N DANIEL, of Perry County, have been shaking hands with relatives here the past few days. They leave for home today. J B DANIEL informed us that it is generally understood that Gov. TAYLOR will convene Legislative about the 15th of next month.

REGISTRARS FOR DYERSBURG AND THE 4th CIVIL DISTRICT OF DYER COUNTY--Messers. T S WILLIAMS & T B EARLE are hereby appointed Registrars for the purpose of registering voters for a special election to be held at Dyersburg on the proposition to subscribe aid of the Birmingham, Jackson and Kansas City railroad, and for further purpose of registering the voters of the 4th district for the general county election for its officers August 1890, also in August 1890 for State & Federal officers. INSOLVENT NOTICE--Having suggested the insolvancy of the estate of A A JOYCE, dec'd, to the County Court Clerk of Dyer County, claims to be filed before the 6th day of April 1890, for protorata distribution. M. GOLDSMITH, Administrator. January 6, 1890.

DEATH OF CAPT. SKIPPER--A late dispatch from Trenton, Tenn. , says:"News has just reached this place of the sudden death of T SKIPPER, a prominent citizen of this county, who resides in the 8th District. He had been in the bottoms running hogs and was returning home, when he dropped from his horse, and expired in a few minutes. The coroner's jury returned a verdict of death from heart disease. "Mr. Tom SKIPPER for a long time lived in Dyersburg and Dyer County.

LOCAL SPRAYS--Capt. WEBB was in town Monday. Henry PIERCE is now selling grocries for KING & Son. Mrs. Dr. TUCKER is recovering from a severe attack of la grippe. Miss Mary TAYLOR of Sardis, Miss. , is the guest of Mrs. Ed KING. Little Eva BRANTLEY has recovered from a three weeks spell of la grippe. Miss Etna McCLERKIN, after an absence of six weeks, returned home last Tuesday. We are glad to state that Capt. W E DeBERRY is recovering from his severe illness. Mr. Jo. L PINNER, of Stewart county, is visiting his uncle, Dr. J C PINNER. Mr. Dave DABNEY has been very sick this week, but reported better. Misses Laura SHARP & Lida CALDWELL, of Humboldt, are visiting Capt. Tom COTTON's family. Mrs. Sue WITT and daughter, Nona, of Gates, have been visiting J Q BRANTLEY's family this week. The la grippe has struck Mayor THOMAS' family and Misses Nim & Beck are recovering from the popular "sneeze. " Dr. J P McGEE, a former Trenton physician, well known in Dyer county, died in Memphis last Monday of la grippe. Capt. LATTA has gone to Florida to look after the DOYLE & VERNON land interest in that state.
We are glad to see Capt. John LAUDERDALE able to be out again after his late spell of la grippe. Mrs. LAUDERDALE has also been quite sick, but is improving. Mr. Jim PIERCE will capture one of Carroll county's fairest daughters on the 12th. Mr. Ed WILDING, a skillful machinest, died at his home in this place last Saturday morning of pneumonia. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss. Dr. F C JOHNSON, Dentist, has gone to Nashville to finish the graduation course in the Dental college of that city. Messrs. R A BURKE & Williard TENNEY have purchased J Q BRANTLEY's stock of groceries and are doing business at the old stand of BRANTLEY & LUCAS. Miss Florence SKEFFINGTON & Miss Alice STEVENS, accomplished teachers in the Dyersburg public high school, are arranging for a trip to Europe this summer. Mr. Jas SWEARENGAN has returned from Mississippi, where he went to attend the funeral of his brother Sam SWEARENGAN, whose death occurred at his home near Oakland on the 30th of last month. It is with regret that we announce the death of Mrs. HUEY, which occurred at her home west of Dyersburg last Monday. Deceased is the wife of the late Dr. J K HUEY, and leaves several children without the care of mother or father. Dr. F C JOHNSON, formerly of the firm of JOHNSON & WHIPPLE, has moved into his new office in the Citizen's Bank. Rev. S K TIGRETT of Halls, was a pleasant caller at this office Thursday. Mr. Tom PAYNE & Mrs. Amanda KING were married at the residence of Mr. Ed WHITE, in the 5th District last Wednesday, Rev. C B WELLBORN officiating. Mrs, Grace ROBERTS and children left yesterday morning for Mississippi. This is "Miss Grace's" first visit home in 7 years. Tom HARTON, colored, was lodged in jail last Tuesday for knocking his brother in the head with a club. The wound is not dangerous, and Tom will make his appearance before the circuit court for making a murderous assault upon his brother. Mr. W D ROBERTS has gone to Scottsboro, Ala. , where he will put in a stave factory. Mr. ROBERTS is now interested in four factories, one at Dyersburg, one at Stokes, one near Fowkles, and the one he will start at Scottsboro. Mr. Wm G DYER announces in to-day's State Gazette that he is a candidate for re-election to the office of Sheriff of Dyer county. Esq. Jim H HALL announces in to-day's State Gazette that he is a candidate for Trustee.
Mr. John McGINNIS and Col. Tom W. NEAL went to Nashville this week to attend the marriage of Miss Stella WRENNE to Dr. HAYES, which took place last Thursday. Miss Stella is the charming daughter of Mr. M J C WRENNE, superintendent of the N C & S L R R , and is well known in society circles in Dyersburg.

A BIG FIRE--Dyersburg is again visited by a disastrous fire-five frame buildings in a few minutes: Mrs. Mag GRANT's store;Wes SILSBY's barber shop; Bill LOYD's grocery; two-story building occupied by Mack HARYON, baker & confectionary and Gus TAYLOR's colored barber shop. The buildings were uninsured and belonged to Miss Lee WALKER.
