STATE GAZETTE GONE TO THE LAND O' THE LEAL--Another old citizen has gone to the land of the beyond, and the home of the McGAUGHEYS is now a desolate place. Rev. R H McGAUGHEY died at his home in Dyersburg last Tuesday, and his sermon was preached at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon, in eloquent and appropriate style by the pastor, Rev. E T HURT. The attendance was large, and the ceremonies were approptiate, at the close of which his remains were viewed by all in attendance, old and young, black and white. The deceased had been a useful, valued and honored citizen of our town and county. A prominent physician, well posted, in former years, he took a leading part in all the questions of local and political interest. His friends and relatives will sadly miss him. His bereaved widow has the sympathy of our entire community, in which she has lived so long and been loved so well. Mr. Byrd WILLIAMS has returned from his trip through Texas. Mr. Carroll DOYLE has returned from school in North Carolina. Miss Lalla SUGG has gone on a visit to her brother, Clyde at Henderson, KY. Lawyer BURNEY, of the Newbern bar, was in town this week on professional business. Senator HARRIS and Gen. ATKINS have our thanks for favors from Washington City. Mr. Jim SWEARENGEN has been elected President of the Dyersburg & Mississippi River Packet Company. Jim WATSON, the lightening drummer for Jacob Straus and Company, at St. Louis, spent Sunday at home. Rev. E P SCOTT, Christian minister, will preach at the Y M C A Hall tomorrow. Miss Edmonia BROWNE, of Kentucky, is visiting her sisters, Mrs. Whitt THOMAS and Miss Nellie BROWNE, of this place. Constable George HAY was in town last Saturday with his fine 3-year-old stallion. He will sell this pretty animal on reasonable terms. Mr. R G MENZIES, of Newbern, offers for sale some fine cattle in to-day's State Gazette. The tin wedding of Mr. Louis HARRISON and wife, which is announced for next Wednesday night is all the talk. Everyone who knows the exquisite taste of Mrs. Evalina HARRISON, is anticipating a most recherche affair. Mr. P T FOWKLES is having material placed on the ground preparatory to erecting a frame cottage on the lot adjoining his father's residence. Wouldn't be suprised if "Picker" was thinking of Matrimony. Local Inspectors DARRAGH & BRAZEE, of Memphis, were in Dyersburg this week and inspected the new light draft steamer, DYERSBURG. They pronounced her "O. K. " except the boiler, which they condemned. A new boiler will be put in. Mr. THOMPSON has sold an interst in his grocery store to Mr. John LIGHT and brother, and the business will be conducted under the firm name of THOMPSON & LIGHT Brothers. Mr. Wm. TURNER and wife went to Nashville last Tuesday night in response to a telegram announcing the dangerous illness of Mrs. Nora GRIZZARD, a daughter of Mrs. TURNER. Mr. TURNER returned Thursday morning and reports Mrs. GRIZZARD is very low, with little hope of her recovery. Married, at the residence of the bride's brother, Mr. J M KLYCE, in the 2nd district, on Thursday morning, February 11, 1887, by Rev. S K TIGRETT;Mr. Calvin WALKER and Miss Neely KLYCE. The newly wedded pair left on the 10 a. m. train for Memphis, where they will spend several days. Mr. Wm. A BURKE and Miss Porey B HAYES were married at the Methodist church, last Wednesday morning, by Rev. E K BRANSFORD. The beautiful wedding march was finely executed on the organ and coronet by Miss Sade LATTA and Capt. Stump BRACKIN. Messers Bob STEVENS and Buck BUTTERWORTH were the polite ushers. Immediately after the ceremony, the newly wedded pair took the train for the city of Memphis. REVIVAL ECHOES--Uncle Jack CHRISTIE is one of the best workers in the revival. Rev. J H PEAY of Halls, attended the meeting Monday night. Mr. & Mrs. F M BOLING gave the preachers a nice supper Tuesdat. Tom LEDSINGER looked the very picture of a preacher while occupying a seat in the pulpit last Monday night. The following parties from Newbern have been attending the revival at the Methodist church this week: Mr. Guy DOUGLASS & wife;Mrs. J W PRITCHARD; Mrs. George TINSLEY; Rev. T F SANDERS; Mrs. STONE; Misses Eunice & Flora FULLER and R G MENZIES. FROM STOKES--Little May SMITH is getting well. Messers. BEAVER & EASON have started their sawmill. Mr. DUNGAN has taken his hooking cow off the streets. We are glad to see our old friend and neighbor, P P PICKARD, was elected comptroller. Prof. MUNDY has been conducting a writing school at this place. Uncle Tommie KELLOW was in town today. He is the oldest man in our district, but full of jokes and fun.
