N.Y.HERALD,writing from Port au Prince, under date of March 20th says; A very
disastrous and destructive fire broke out in this city on the 19th inst.,at 7
a.m. and half the capital of Hayti is in ashes. No engines have ever been
brought in to extinguish fires, notwithstanding the calamity of the 28th of
February 1865,when nearly half the city burned, the people, instead of helping to
stop the progress of the fires, ran half wild in the streets,or robbed and
plundered. The Government did nothing and the troops did nothing. The fire burned
30 hours. THE HUMOROUS citizens of Cartersville,Georgia, are amusing
themselves by milking each others' cows after dusk, and appropiating the proceeds. They
say it is almost as rich as the milk of human kindness. A BLACKSMITH in Ilminster,England lately performed a
perilous test.A child,aged seven years,while playing with his brother,aged
twelve months, placed over his head an iron band similar to that used for the
nuts of cartwheels. The child's neck began to swell, and when the parents
discovered it,they were horrified to find that it was impossible to remove the
band, and that suffocation was imminent.A blacksmith names COLES was called
in,and suggested the desperate idea of hammering off the iron with a sledge, and
he successfully completed the task. While one person held the legs and another
the head of the little one,COLES fearlessly struck at the ring and severed it.A
false blow of half an inch would have caused instant death. A CLERGYMAN KILLED GOING TO A FUNERAL--The Corspe Returns To
Life. The LaCrosse Republican has a correspondent who was recently visiting at
West Bend,Wisc.,when he learned the annexed facts, which are substantiated by
Hon.F.O.THORPE,who resides at West Bend: On Saturday, the 3d inst.,at West
Bend, the Rev.Mr.MILLER was called to go into the country a few miles from town
to preach the funeral sermon of Mrs.LAMBERT,who was supposed to be dead. She was
arrayed in her funeral attire, and placed in her coffin. It appears that
Mr.MILLER was the owner of a factious horse that was sometimes unmanageable and
would run away.He was to pass through a timbered country and on account of
snowdrifts, the horse threw the preacher from the cutter with great force upon a
large oak stump that was filled with short knots. One of these knots severed the
jugular vein. But the most singular development of the sad and mysterious affair
is yet to be told.Further information proves that Mrs.LAMBERT was not dead, but
had been in a trance for two days, presenting every indication that life had
departed. She states she could hear every word spoken and could realize the
preparations her friends were making, but could not move or speak. Her grave had
been dug.She now lives and the minister who had been called to preach her
funeral service, now lies in the grave made to receive her last remains. THE EFFECT OF BROWNLOW HARANGUES--(from Nashville Banner),a
few days after Gov.BROWNLOW made his speech in Knoxville,Col. BROWNLOW made a
most inflammatory speech in Jonesboro',and as a result of the agitation renewed
in East Tennessee by these speeches, one man was murdered by midnight assassins
near Greenville, and six men ordered to leave Jonesboro instantly. GENERAL NEWS ITEMS---Daniel S.DICKENSON is dead.He was the
only competitor of Andrew JOHNSON for the Vice Presidency in 1864. MISS ANN R.ADAMS,an ancient maiden,68 years of age, residing
in Danville,is cutting her fourth set of teeth and growing a new crop of black
hair. Mrs.Elizabeth CHRISTY,a widow lady,65 years of age,is cutting a new set
of teeth after being toothless for years. THE PRESIDENT has intimated that his late proclamations did
not terminate martial law in the Southern States. GENERAL STEADMAN is to be sent on a run through the South to
report upon the conditions and sentiments of the people. IT IS REPORTED that the Secessionists in Texas has seized
political control of the State and carry everything with ahigh
hand.Gov.HAMILTON is reported en route to Washington. HON.JOSHUA HILL,formerly a member of Congress from
Georgia,is being urged for a position of Collector of Customs at Savannnah,in
place of Mr.WOODBRIDGE,about to resign. The only obstacle in the way of his
appointment is that he cannot take the test oath.If HILL can't can't take the
oath,no man in the South can. PUBLIC MEETING-AID FOR DISABLED SOLDIERS---In pursuance of
notice, quite a respectable number of ladies and gentlemen assembled at the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Dyersburg,on the 14th inst.,for the relief of
disabled and indigent Southern soldiers. The meeting came to order by
Rev.W.J.MAHON being called to the chair, and John SKEFFINGTON,Esq.,acting as
Secretary. Mr.Chas.ALLEN,from a committee appointed to draft resolutions and
suggest a mode of organization, presented a report which was in substance
adopted. It embodied the following plan of organization, and list of officiers:
The Association to be known as the "Dyer County Aid Society,"having
for its objects the collections of contributations for the purpose of supplying
those who may need them with artificial limbs; helping the indigent, and
relieving the families of the slain and the helpless; the operations of the
Society to be confined to Dyer County. Said Society to have for its officers
one President; a Vice President; a Treasurer; a corresponding and a recording
Secretary; a central committee of five, in the town of Dyersburg, and
sub-committees,four ladies and one gentleman,in each civil district, whose duty
it shall be to solicit and collect contributations, and report subjects for the
attention of the Society.Elections held once a year. Qualifications for
membership to be payment of one dollar,by gentlemen, ladies free. A sufficiant
numbers of persons had their names enrolled as members of the Society and
proceeded at once to elect officers with the following result: President-Rev.J.W.MAHON;
Vice President-Rev.Hamilton PARKS; Treasurer-J.W.ECHOLS; Secretary-Tom W.NEAL;
Rec.Secretary-Dr.R.H.McGAUGHEY. Whereupon the President appointed the following
gentlemen a Central Committee for the ensuing year: C.W.DOYLE, John L.WEBB, Chas.ALLEN,
S.D.WHITTEN, and A.M.STEVENS,and the committee directed to suggest to the
President the names of suitable persons to compose the District
committes.J.W.ECHOLS, S.R.LATTA, and John SKEFFINGTON were appointed a
committee to draft a constitution and by laws for the government of the
Society, and S.R.LATTA, Tom W.NEAL and John SKEFFINGTON to wait on
Mr.Jno.WEBB,and others and request them to give a concert for the benefit of
the Society. On motion,Tom W.NEAL,Editor of the State Gazette, was unanimously elected
an honorary member of the Society. On motion of Gen.T.H.BELL,John
SKEFFINGTON,Esq.,of Dyersburg, was requested to deliver an address on the
objects and purposes of the Society on Saturday, the 28th inst. The proprietors
