DAUNCE of said State and County, having been presented as a witness in support of the application of Mrs. PENELOPE BEATRICE JONES for a pension under Chapter 202, Acts of 1905; Chapter 103, Acts of 1907; Chapter 13, Acts of 1909; and Chapter 7, Acts of 1911, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows:

1. What is your name and what is your postoffice address?
          JAMES F. OSBOURNE, Trenton, Tennessee

2. Are you acquainted with the applicant, Mrs. PENELOPE BEATRICE JONES? If so, how long have you known her?
          Fifty years

3. Where does she reside, and how long and since when has she been a resident of this State?
          Finley, Dyer Co, Tennessee and has always lived in Tennessee

4. When and where was she born?
          Dec 15th 1838, Mifflin, Henderson Co, Tennessee

5. Were you ever acquainted with her husband?
          Yes

6. When and by whom were they married?
          Answer in Certificate attached

Certificate #1 - Mrs. Leanora Lauderdale of Bright, DeSoto Co, Miss. certifies that she attended and witnessed the marriage ceremony of Samuel Jarrett Jones and Penelope Beatrice Cobb at Mifflin, Henderson Co, TN on the 24th of Nov 1858. Certificate #2 – Mrs. Corinne Clifton of Hernando, DeSoto Co, Miss. certifies that she attended and witnessed the marriage ceremony of Samuel Jarrett Jones and Penelope Beatrice Cobb at Mifflin, Henderson Co, TN on the 24th of Nov 1858. The minister who performed the ceremony was named C. McKinney of Jackson, TN – dated 17 July 1915. Witnessed: R.C.Clifton – Chancery Court Clerk

7. Were either or both of you present at the marriage?
          No

8. How long did you know him?
          Since 1864

9. When and where did SAMUEL JARRETT JONES enlist in the War Between the States, and in what Company and Regiment did he enlist, and how do you know this?
          I don't know when or where he enlisted, but know he was Lieut in Kisers Regt and afterward in Kiser's Scout Co.

10. Were you a member of the same Comapny and Regiment at the close of the war?
          I was a member of the same Regt.
          But not of the same Co. nor was I a member of the scout co.

11. How long did he persorm regular military duty?
          From the time he enlisted to the close of the war.

12. When and where was his Company and Regiment surrendered?
          In May 1865 in the state of Ala. General Dick Taylor Dept.

13. Were you with the command when it surrendered?
          No. I went back to back to Tenn from Oxford.

14. Was SAMUEL JARRETT JONES, the husband of applicant, present?
          I cannot answer this question, as I was back with Inft. The remainder of questions answered in note next page by J R DAUCE who knew all of the Scout Co. made up of Officers.

15. By whose authority did he leave?
          He was furlowed after Hood's campaign. But went back after his time expired.

How do you know all this? (State fully and clearly.)
          I was 1st Lieut Co (D) 19 and 20th Tennessee Cav and knew the officers who composed this Scout Co and saw them nearly every day.

17. When and where did SAMUEL JARRETT JONES die?
          Sept 22nd 1893 at Memphis Tennessee

18 Where did he reside at his death, and how long had he been a resident of Tennessee at his death?
          Memphis – all his life.

19. Do you know of your own knowledge that applicant is the lawful widow of SAMUEL JARRETT JONES?
          Yes

20. Has she remained unmarried since her soldier husband's death, and is she now his widow?
          Yes

21. What property, effects or income has the applicant, if any, and how do you know this of your own knowledge?
          Has no property or income. I know that she is dependent on her children.

Has applicant conveyed any property, in the last two years or given any away, if so, what was it, and to whom?
          No she has had nothing to convey or give.

Note – Let the witness who can answer the greatest number of questions do so; then let the other witness state in the space below how much of the testimony of the first witness he concurs in, and whether or not he can answer any of the questions not answered by the first witness.
          I concur in the answers to all questions as given by DR. J F OSBOURNE. Questions 15 and 16 he cannot answer, but I know that the record as given is correct except as to the one letter in his name.

J. F. OSBOURNE and LIEUT. JOHN R DAUCE of this county are of trustworthy character, and that their statements are entitled to full faith and credit.

I do further certify that before answering the foregoing questions, the applicant and said witness took the oath herein prescribed and the full text of the affadavite was read to the applicant and witnesses before the name was signed and subscribed.

The records of this office show that SAMUEL T. JONES (name not found as SAMUEL J. JONES), private, Capt. T. N. Kizer's Conpany I, 27th Tennessee Infantry, Confederate States Army, was enlisted August 13, 1861, at Trenton, Tenn. He was later promoted to be first lieutennant(date not shown), and tendered his resignation in a letter dated April 7, 1864, stating that he had been on conscript duty and desired to volunteer as a private in Capt. Kiser's Company of Scouts, belonging to Forrest's Command. His resignation was accepted July 26, 1864.

The records also show that S. T. Jones, privated and second sergeant, Capt. T. N. Kizer's Company, Forrest;s Scouts, Confederate States Army, was surrendered May 4, 1865, at Citronelle, Ala., and paroled at Columbus, Miss., in May, 1865, date not shown. The date of his entry into service as a member of this organization has not been found.

PENELOPE BEATRICE JONES of said State and County, desiring to avail herself of the pension allowed to Indigent Widows of Soldiers, under Act of General Assembly, approved April, 1905, being Chapter 202 of the Acts of 1905; Chapter 103, Acts of 1907; Chapter 18, Acts of 1909; and Chapter 7, Acts of 1911, hereby submits her proofs, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the following questions, deposes and answers as follows:

2. How long and since when have you been a resident of this State?

5. When, where, and in what Company and Regiment did your husband enlist or serve during the War Between the States?
          August 13th, 1861 - Trenton TN – Co.II 27th Tenn Inft Regt CSA

6. How long did your husband serve in said Company and Regiment?
          Was 1st Lieut and tendered his resignation Apr 7th 1864.
          Had been on conscript duty.
          Desired to join #2 ATTACHMENT

          #2 ATTACHMENT: Capt T. N. Kisers Company of Scouts which belonged to General Forrests
          Cavalry Command. This Co. was made up of commissioned officers who were left without a
          command after reorganization and consolidations of old Co. and Regts. He was 2nd Sergant of said
          Co. A mistake was made in recording the initials of his name. The letter T should be J. Don't know
          how this happened, but it often does.

7. When and where did your husband's Company and Regiment surrender?

          May 4th 1865 at Citronilla, Ala and paroled at Columbus, Miss in May 1865.

8. Was your husband present at the time and place when his Company and Regiment surrendered?
          Yes

9. If not with his command at surrender, state clearly and specifically where her was, when he left command, for what cause and by what authority.
          He came home after Hood's Campaign in Middle Tenn on furlough and returned when time was
          out.

10. Was your husband a pensioner or an applicant for pension, under the laws of Tennessee?
          No

11. Have you hertofore applied for a pension in this State?
          No

12. When and where did your husband die?
          Sept 22nd 1893 at Memphis, Tenn

13. At the time of your husband's death, were you living with him as his lawful wife? Yes

14. Have you married since the death of your soldier husband?
          No

15. How many children did you have by your said husband? Give sex and age at this time.
          Eight – Six Sons and Two Daughters.
          Three sons have died since their Father.
          Ages of those living 50-45-40 48-52

16. What property, real or personal, or income do you have or posses, and its gross value?
          None. No property. No Income.

17. What property, real or personal, did you possess at death of husband or did he leave you, and what disposition, if any, by sale or gift, have you made of the same?
          None. I had no property at time of his death and have none now.

18. Have you a family? If so, who compose such family? Give their means of support. Have they any lands or other property?
          No. Have lived with my children, first one and then another. I have no family.

19. Name some friend, giving his name and postoffice address, who will be willing to have us write to him about your case if necessary.
