Mrs. Susan Gambell of said State and County, desiring to avail herself of the
pension allowed to Indigent Widows of Tennessee Soldiers, under Act of General
Assembly, approved April, 1905, being Chapter 202 of the Acts of 1905, hereby
submits her proofs, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the
following questions, deposes and answers as follows:
1. What is your full name and where do you reside?
Susan Gambell; near Dyersburg, Tenn; Dyer County
2. How long and since when have you been a resident of this State?
All my life
3. When and where were you born and what was your maiden name?
In Giles County Tenn: May 11th 1821: Susan Reagan
4. When and where was your husband born – state his full name, and where were
you and he married, and who performed the marriage ceremony? (Attach
certified copy marriage licenses in every case.)
In Giles County Tenn in May 1815: James Jefferson Gamble.
We were married in Giles County Tenn. May 1838.
5. When, where, and in what Company and Regiment did your husband enlist or
serve during the war between the States?
Co 10. Capt. Willis Murley: in Giles County in 1861.
6. How long did your husband serve in said Company and Regiment?
about four months
7. When and where did your husband's Company and Regiment surrender?
My husband died of exposure in service
8. Was your husband present at the time and place when his Company and
Regiment surrendered?
no
9. If not with his command at surrender, state clearly and specifically
where her was, when he left command, for what cause and by what authority.
He died from exposure, having taken measles & then being exposed
contracted cold & died.
10. When and where dod your husband die?
at Nashville in hospital at time of fall of Ft. Donelson
11. At the time of your husband's death, were you living with him as his
lawful wife?
Yes
12. How many children did you have by your said husband? Give sex and age at
this time.
Had six; but only three living now, Sam John Gambell age 55;
Wm Gambell age 51; Susan Jeff Jackson 45
13. What property, real or personal, or income do you have or posses, and its
gross value?
90 acres of poor rocky land in Giles County which rents for $30.00
per year: no personal property
14. What property, real or personal, did you possess at death of husband or
did he leave you, and what disposition, if any, by sale or gift, have
you made of the same?
Nothing but the land above mentioned and two horses & cows which I
used to raise my childred with
15. Have you a family? If so, who compose such family? Give their means of
support. Have they any lands or other property?
No. John Gambell has bought but has not paid for a little place
worth $1000.00

prior to the Civil War, was destroyed during said war, and for that reason I
cannot certify to the Marriage of James J. Gambell to Susan Gambell.

Giles County.
Personally comes T. J. Doss and states that he was acquainted with
James J. gambell and Susan Gambell about twenty five years before the Civil
War and that they lived together as man and wife until his death in 1861 in
Nashville Tenn. And I further state that I believe that they were legally
Married but I cannot swear to this for I was not present at the Marriage, but
I do swear that they loved together as man and wife until his death in 1861,
and that Susan Gambell has remained a widow until this date.

3. Where does she reside, and how long and since when has she been a
resident of this State?
In Dyer County, Tennessee; all her life

5. Were you ever acquainted with her husband?
Yes
6. When and by whom were they married?
Don't know
7. When and where was he born?
Giles County
8. How long did you know him?
Fifty years
9. When and where did James Jefferson Gambell enlist in the war between the
States, and in what Company and Regiment did he enlist, and how do you
know this?
Giles Co. 1861 - Co. A. 32nd Tennessee. I was a member of
same Company.
10. Were you a member of the same Comapny and Regiment?
Yes
11. How long did he persorm regular military duty?
About four months
12. When and where was his Company and Regiment surrendered?
At Greensboro, N.C - 1865
13. Were you with the command when it surrendered?
No.
14. Was James Jefferson Gambell, the husband of applicant, present?
No
15. If not present, where was he?
Dead
16. When and where did did he leave his command?
At Bowlingreen Ky - 1861
For what cause?
Had measels, took cold and died from it.
By whose authority did he leave?
by authority of surgeon in command
How do you know all this?
I was present
17. When and where did James Jefferson Gamble die?
at Nashville in Hospital, 1861-
18 Where did he reside at his death, and how long had he been a resident of
Tennessee at his death?
All his life in Giles County Tennessee
19. Do you know of your own knowledge that applicant is the lawful widow of
James Jefferson Gambell?
Yes, to the best of my knowledge & belief
20. Has she remained unmarried since her soldier husband's death, and is she
now his widow?
Yes
21. What property, effects or income has the applicant, if any, and how do
you know this of your own knowledge?
Don't know, but know think very little
22. Has applicant conveyed any property, in the last two years or given
any away, if so, what was it, and to whom?
Don't know

W. T. Hamlin swears that all answers made by T. J. Doss one of the
witnesses are true but states that he was a member of 3rd Tennessee Reg Co H
and therefore cannot answer questions 9-10, 11, 12 & 13 but all others he does

I do further certify that before answering the foregoing questions, the
applicant and said witness took the oath herein prescribed and the full
text of the affadavite was read to the applicant and witnesses before the
name was signed and subscribed.

Gambrell for a pension as a widow of the first class. Her husband seems to
have had his record on straight, and his aged widow, now nearly 86 is without
sufficient means of support, and needs the help of the state's modest pensions.
