Dr. G. W. Yeargin, member of the mercantile firm of Roberts, Yeargin & Co., was born in New Madrid County, Mo., in 1840, and is a son of William B. and Nancy T. (Crenshaw) Yeargin. The father was of Irish descent, born in 1812 in North Carolina. He was taken to Kentucky when quite young, and was there married in 1832. He soon after moved to southeastern Missouri, where he farmed and carried on merchandising. He was killed in August, 1860. His wife was born in Virginia in 1807, and died in 1864. Of their ten children three are living: Thomas J., who is a railroad engineer of Wadsworth, Nev.; Sallie (Mrs. Finley), residents of Sherman, Col., and Dr. G. W. Yeargin, our subject, who was reared at home and educated in Bethel College, of Carroll County. He began studying medicine at the age of twenty under Dr. David Richardson, but in 1861 joined Company K, First Missouri, or Bowen's regiment, and was chosen second lieutenant. He was afterward transferred to Company G, and was elected first lieutenant. A few days after the battle of Shiloh he was taken sick, and was cared for at Memphis until within a few days of the fight at that place. Owing to ill health he soon returned to Missouri. He resumed his medical studies, and in the winter of 1863 entered the medical department of the University of Louisville, Ky., and remained one session. In the fall of 1864 he rejoined the army, and served until the final surrender. He soon after began practicing in Obion County, Tenn. In 1867 re-entered the Louisville Medical College and graduated in the spring of 1868 as an M. D. He soon after purchased land near Dyersburg, and practiced his profession and farmed until 1876, when he and T. L. Wells formed a partnership in the foundry business in Dyersburg. He followed the same business in Union City for some time, and since 1880 has been engaged in the grocery and general merchandise business. He and his partners, Messrs. Roberts and Swearengen, keep an excellent stock and are doing a good business. December 31, 1862, he married Mary A. C. Leroy, who was born in Caledonia, Ill., in 1845. They have eight children: Joseph E., Mary A., William E., Georgia Vesta, Fannie B., Guy W., Thomas H. and Antonio R. The Doctor is a Democrat, and he and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
