J. G. Tucker, a prominent farmer of the Sixth District, was born in Nottoway County, Va., September 14, 1822, being one of a family of nine children, five of them living now. The parents were Godfrey and Sarah Tucker. Godfrey Tucker was born in the same county, in 1785; was married in 1809; was a farmer, and died in 1837. Our subject's mother was born in the same State and county as her husband and died in 1849. Mr. Tucker was educated in his native county, in Virginia. March 8, 1848, he married Miss Holley, daughter of Isaac Tucker. She was born in Dinwiddie County, Va., in 1820, and they had five children, but three now living: Lucy (wife of A. M. Harper), Jennie (widow of I. A. Harris) and James, a farmer, living in Gibson County. Mr. Tucker went to Davidson County in 1848, but in 1850 moved to Dyer County and purchased a place two and a half miles southwest of Newbern, but in 1859 he located on his present farm of 230 acres one mile south of Newbern. Mr. Tucker is a great advocate of public schools, and for twenty years has been one of the trustees of the Newbern school. He is a Democrat, was formerly a Whig, and cast his first presidential vote for Henry Clay. Mr. and Mrs. Tucker are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He has been a member since fourteen years of age. He is a public spirited, enterprising man.
