Dr. J. C. Pinner, photographer of Dyersburg, was born in Stewart County, Tenn., March 6, 1837. He is the son of Col. Joseph Pinner, who, when a youth, came from the Old North State with his father, John Pinner, and located in Stewart County, where, about 1823, he was married and where he passed the remainder of his life. He died April 9, 1845. His wife, Sallie R. Acree, who was born in Stewart County, December 27, 1805, still survives him. Nine children were born to them, only three of whom - Margaret, widow of E. P. Petty, Sallie O. (Mrs. R. R. Acree), and the subject of this sketch - are living. J. C. Pinner received his education at Cumberland College, and for a time was himself engaged in teaching school. At the age of twenty-two he began the study of medicine under Dr. W. W. Pinner, his brother. He then took a course of lectures at the medical department of the Louisville University, and in 1860 engaged in the practice of his profession. In 1862 he entered the army and was assigned to duty in the State hospital at Nashville, where he remained six months. His eyesight then failing him, he was obliged to retire, and about the close of the war he began business as a photographer, intending to continue only until his eyesight should be restored. However, finding the work suited to his tastes, he has ever since continued it. He has been a resident of Dyersburg since July, 1867. On April 20, 1870, he married Mrs. Missouri Todd, a daughter of Turner and Elizabeth Chamblin. She died November 21, 1874, leaving two children: Gertrude and Grace; and on December 20, 1877, he was united in marriage with Carrie Simpson, a native of Carroll County, Tenn. They have one child - Carrie. Dr. Pinner is one of the influential men of Dyersburg. For several years he served as and alderman, in 1873 was mayor, and for the past twelve years has been a magistrate of the Fourth Civil District. He is a member of the A. F. & A. M. (K. T. degree), the I.O.O.F. and of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. His wife is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
