G. W. Gregory

From Goodspeed's History of Dyer County, TN

G. W. Gregory, one of the oldest merchants of Newbern, was born in Wilson County, Tenn., July 4, 1844, and was one of nine children, his parents being William M. and Lucinda P. Gregory. His father was born in Wilson County, in 1816. In 1845 he moved to Sumner County, being a merchant there, and died in 1872. Mr. Gregory's mother was born in Bedford County, in 1818, and died April 16, 1861. He was chiefly educated in Sumner County; came to Dyer County in 1860, and for eight years devoted his time to farming, then attended Union College, at Newbern, for one year, and then entered the store of Tinsley, Tucker & Co., as salesman, and remained two years. After clerking for ten years, he bought out Porter & Son, and commenced merchandising for himself: he formed a partnership with W. C. Dickey for four years, but since then has been alone, and very successful, and with one exception has been in business longer than any other merchant in town. In 1882 he married Miss Eva, daughter of Albert and Mary Martin, and has one son - Martin G. W. April, 1863, he entered the Confederate Army, under Capt. Daniel E. Parker, and was in the battle of Athens, Ala., Franklin, and a number of others. He returned home in April, 1865. Mr. Gregory is an Odd Fellow, and a member of the K. of H., and both his wife and himself are Cumberland Presbyterians. He has been for eight years superintendent of the Sunday school, and it is the most flourishing one in the county.
