T. J. Fitzhugh, merchant of Fowlkes Station, Tenn., was born in Dyer (now Crockett) County in 1853, and is one of five surviving members of a family of nine children, born to Thomas H. and Margaret E. (Knight) Fitzhugh. The father was of Scotch and German descent born in Madison County, Ala., May 10, 1830. He was brought to Dyer County, Tenn., by his parents when four years of age. He has always followed the occupation of farming. His wife was born in Dyer County, Tenn., in 1837. The following are her children that are living: William C., John L., Thomas J., Tennessee E. (Mrs. R. W. Follis), and Margaret Brownlow. Mrs. Fitzhugh died in November, 1867, and Mr. Fitzhugh took for his second wife Birdie Ripley. Our subject was educated in the common schools of Dyer County, and made his home with his father until he was eighteen years of age. He then began farming, and in October, 1883, established a retail liquor and grocery store at Fowlkes Station, but at the end of eighteen months sold out and established a general merchandise store at the same place, and is doing well financially. He has developed quite a capacity for business and is one of the wide awake business men of the village. He is a Republican and cast his first presidential vote for R. B. Hayes. He owns 100 acres of land, two dwelling houses and lots, and one business house in Fowlkes Station. February 28, 1877, he married Miss Longenia McCoy, daughter of William McCoy. Mrs. Fitzhugh was born in Dyer County in 1854, and is the mother of one child - John C. Mr. and Mrs. Fitzhugh are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. |
