Letter from Victor Zieff to President Franklin D. Roosevelt
June 29, 1934

"Dear President:
"I read in the Memphis Commercial Appeal your radio address of last night about the New Deal. I believe all that you have done is very profitable to all masses of the people and will result in great improvement of business conditions. "I am a Jewish merchant in a small town and during the years of the depression it was hard sailing for me and for all the people. Since you have been in office my business is better and all the business in my community is better. You have inspired faith and courage and helped the poor and oppressed. I think you are the best president since George Washington and greater than Moses for it took him 40 years to bring the Jewish people out of the wilderness and you have accomplished wonders in such a short time. I am a good Democrat and in my opinion it would be unnecessary to have an election for next term as it should be the unanimous consent of the people for you to remain in office for life. I am not fishing for a job but only good-will.
"Your admirer,
"Victor Zieff
"Newbern, Tenn."
