May 27 – Stormed. Wiped South Dyersburg off the map. Demolished Joe Pope's new barn.

June 13 – Hurricane sweped [sic.] the neighborhood at 10 ½ o'clock P.M. Church, School House, Store and barns wrecked, etc. [?July 1?] My front lot covered with trees and brush. 4 old apple trees down and two poplars near [my son] Glenn's garden [Glenn Roache McCorkle].

Aug. 9 Big rain and storm last night. Corn and sorghum tangled some.

"August 27 – The corner stone for the Lemalsamac Church was layed [sic.] today. A. J. [Anderson Jehiel McCorkle, brother of the diarist] and Jno. E. McCorkle [the diarist himself] were present, the only two members of the old church 61 years ago when it was built 61 years ago. There are only 4 persons living who were members when the old church was built, viz., A..J., Jno. E., & Joe S. McCorkle [Joseph Smith McCorkle, son of RAH and Tirzah Scott McCorkle] & Mrs. Susan [McCorkle] McNail [daughter of RAH & Tirzah Scott McCorkle].
" The church was organized in Woods School House in August 1848 by Green Hill of Gibson County with 9 members present, viz. RAH McCorkle [A son of Robert McCorkle & Margaret Morrison McCorkle; the husband of Tirzah Scott. A paternal uncle of the diarist]
Tirza [Scott] McCorkle [Mrs. RAH McCorkle, aunt-by-marriage of the diarist] Sarah E McCorkle [ A dau.of RAH & Tirzah Scott McCorkle, who was to marry Jno. Algea, therefore a paternal 1st cousin to the diarist.]
Jehiel Morrison McCorkle [A son of Robert & Margaret Morrison McCorkle, therefore a paternal uncle of the diarist] Elizabeth McCorkle [Likely the wife of Jehiel M. McCorkle, therefore aunt-by-marriage of the diarist. I think they called Mrs. Jehiel McCorkle Lizzie Smith McCorkle. It's unlikely this is Lizzie McCorkle [Reeves], sister of the diarist John E. McCorkle. ]
Jane M McCorkle [Jane Maxwell Thomas McCorkle (Mrs. Edwin A. McCorkle), mother of the diarist] Margaret Dickey [–Peggy Dickey. I think she granted the church its land.] Lemuel Scott [– Husband of Margaret Pamela McCorkle or Permelia McCorkle, a dau. of Margaret Morrison & Robert McCorkle, therefore uncle-by-marriage of the diarist]
J. F. Algea [– A dau. of RAH & Tirzah Scott McCorkle, Sarah E. McCorkle, married Jonathan Algea J.F. Algea was the husband of a 1st cousin of the diarist.]
"R.A.H. McCorkle manufactured the name from Lemuel [Lemuel Scott], Algea [Jonathan Algea], Sarah [RAH's daughter, Sarah E. McCorkle Algea], Mac [for McCorkle]: ‘Lemalsamac.' "

[The following two addenda are from Marsha Huie, MarshaHuie@aol.com, in 2004.]

1. The diarist John Edwin McCorkle was a son of pioneers to West Tennessee, Edwin A. McCorkle and Jane Maxwell Thomas McCorkle. His maternal grandparents were Elizabeth Purviance and William Thomas. His paternal grandparents were Margaret Morrison and Robert McCorkle. John Edwin McCorkle's 1st wife was Tennessee Alice Edwards Scott McCorkle, whose parents were Nancy Edwards Wellborn and William Scott. Tennie Scott McCorkle was a 1st cousin to Sarah Elizabeth (Mrs. Julius M.) Huie, a daughter of James Scott. John Edwin McCorkle's 2nd wife was Mary Elizabeth Cotton of Botland, KY, whose parents were Juliet Tong and Henry Cotton. Most of these people are buried in the McCorkle Cemetery, Dyer County, Tennessee, but Henry Cotton is buried near Bardstown, KY.

2. Addendum regarding families Purviance and Dickey, then Scott and McCorkle and Huie.

Generation A (Europe).
Jon de Purviance, flourished circa 1600-1610 in Royan, France, now in France's Sainlonge District; died ca. 1630. His grandson Jacques Purviance fled France for Ireland on or after 22 October 1685, after King Louis XIV's revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which had allowed religious toleration of French Protestants. A great-grandson of Jon de PurVaiance, John Purviance, migrated to the American colonies circa 1740. This great-grandson John's brother Samuel Purviance remained in land near Ulster Province, Ireland, but Samuel's sons were to move to the American colonies in the 1750s.

Generation B (Europe). Jacques de PurVaiance, France.

Generation C (Europe). Jacques de PurVaiance, France to Ireland.
A brother of Lewis Purvines, this Jacques fled France 22 October 1685, and died in Ireland.

Generation D (Europe). John Purviance, who died in Ireland, presumably County Donegal in the northwest of Northern Ireland adjacent to Ulster Province. This John Purviance had a brother named Samuel Purviance (This brother, Samuel Purviance, was at one time in Alloway's Creek, New Jersey. It is unknown whether Samuel Purviance was ever in Ireland; he may have gone directly from France to the Americas).

Generation E (Europe) now becomes Generation I in the Americas. This Generation E includes Generation I: I (1) David Purviance, born County Donegal, became an immigrant to America and died in Pennsylvania in 1743. I (2) Samuel Purviance

I (3) John Purviance, born County Donegal in NW Ireland in 1712. John married, 1st, in Ireland Margaret McKnight, and, 2nd, in Lancaster County, PA, Janet _____ Purviance. This John Purviance died circa 1749.
More on Generation I (3): John Purviance m. (1st) Margaret McKnight and (2nd) Janet ___ PURVIANCE

Generation II. Nancy PURVIANCE (b. PA) m. in PA John DICKEY. This John Dickey, who died circa 1779, was a silversmith who emigrated from PA to NC as an early immigrant to the Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC, area. John Dickey's 2nd wife was a Jane or Jeanne Dickey. At least some of John Dickey's children are listed as Gen. III immediately below. John Dickey's widow Jane Dickey (2nd wife) placed a bond of 6,000 pounds sterling in the Rowan Co., NC, Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions on 12 Feb. 1780, to become administratrix of her husband's estate, with Michael Troy, Esq. In about 3 months, on May 4, 1780, this same Michael Troy was appointed guardian of the minor child Sarah Dickey (Scott).

Children of John Dickey and 1st wife Nancy Purviance = Generation III immediately below:

Generation III (1) Rebecca Dickey: her guardian appointed in Rowan Co., NC, court was James Purviance;

Gen. III (2) Ebeneezer Dickey (his guardian was Joshua Nellson appointed Nov. 2, 1779, in Rowan Co., NC., court records);

Gen. III (3) Moses Dickey (guardian was a Mr. Lowrance or Lorance, who posted a 100-pound bond to the court). Rowan Co., NC, court records say Moses Dickey was of lawful age to choose in 1785, and chose officially on May 4, 1785, in court, John Lorance as his guardian; and

Gen. III (4) Sarah Dickey (Mrs. James Scott) (Sarah's guardian was Michael Troy). Sarah's husband James Scott was born 20 Aug. 1777 in PA and died 1856 in Yorkville-Churchton area, Dyer-Gibson Counties, TN. Sarah Dickey Scott was b. in Rowan County, NC, on 30 Oct. 1777; Michael Troy was appointed Sarah Dickey's guardian, Sarah being listed as an orphan of John Dickey, deceased, in the May 4, 1780, minutes of the Court of Please and Quarter Sessions, Rowan Co., NC. Sarah Dickey Scott d. in Gibson County, TN – Descendant Marsha Huie moved Sarah Dickey Scott and her husband James Scott's marker in 1984 from the old Yorkville C.P. Church cemetery, then in sad disrepair, to our family cemetery, the McCorkle Cemetery, Dyer Co, TN, unfortunately a bit before restoration of the old Yorkville Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery. More on Generation III, Sarah Dickey (b. 30 Oct. 1777 in NC as the daughter of John Dickey and Nancy Purviance Dickey) married James Scott (b. 20 Aug. 1777 in PA, d. 1856 in Gibson Co., TN). Sarah Dickey Scott and James Scott moved from NC to SC to Alabama, then to West Tennessee, according to Goodspeed's History of Tennessee (Gibson County biographies).

____________________________________________________________________________

Generation IV = children of Sarah Dickey (b. 1777 in Rowan Co., NC) m. James Scott (b.1777 in PA.):

Generation IV (1): John Dickie Scott – [This probably should be John Dickey Scott? I supplied this information to Stuart Hoyle Purvines for his gargantuan 1986 Purviance Family book and I may have spelled Dickey incorrectly for Stu.] John Dickey Scott was born 9 Jan. 1802 and married 3 July 1828, in Gibson Co., TN, Susan Carolina Williams (Susan Williams Scott b. 26 March 1810, died 26 May 1889, a daughter of Joseph Williams). Children of John Dickey & Susan Carolina Williams Scott = Generation V = V(1): James A. Scott, 31 Aug. 1842-28 Sept. 1890. V(2): Susan Scott, a Mrs. McClellan, 1843-1914. and V(3): John William Scott, 6 Dec. 1829-27 Jan. 1872, m. Margaret Ann Lake, 4 April 1833-15 Sept. 1910, a dau.of Justus Lake.

Generation IV (2): Lemuel Scott m. Margaret Pamela McCorkle. Lemuel Scott, b. 2 Sept. 1804, d. 17 Sept 1866. Margaret Permelia or Pamela McCorkle was a daughter of Robert McCorkle & Robert's 2nd wife Margaret Morrison McCorkle, Robert and Margaret each of Rowan Co., NC, then Murfreesboro, TN, then Dyer Co, TN. Pamela McCorkle Scott was born 14 June 1805. Their children = Generation V = ????? .[Edward Campbell Huie's widow Drucilla Garner Huie has this record in 2004, in Newbern,Tennessee. Some of these Scott descendants still live around Newbern-Yorkville, Tennessee.]

Generation IV (3): James Scott m. Violet B. Roddy. James Scott, born 1808 in SC, married (1st) in 1832 Violet B. Roddy; (2nd) in 1850 Margaret Scott, a cousin, in 1850. I don't think there were children by the 2nd wife. I (Marsha Huie) am a descendant of the 1st wife. The only Roddy I have found in records living near Gibson-Dyer-Obion Counties of TN was a male 1st cousin of Sarah Scott (Mrs. Julius Huie) living circa 1900 in Obion Co., near the Elbridge community. I wonder if our Violet Bettie Roddy was kin to the Confederate General Roddey who moved on up to New York City, because the times and places in Alabama jibe, but that's pure speculation.

Generation IV (4): Tirza Scott (born in SC in 1810) m. Robert Andrew Hope McCorkle (b. 23 March 1807), a son of Robert & Margaret Morrison McCorkle. Tirzah Scott married RAH McCorkle in Gibson Co, TN, on 4 Dec. 1828. Tirzah & RAH McCorkle were early immigrants to West Tennessee when the district was opened up for white settlement. Generation IV (5): William Scott, b. SC 1813, d. Hardeman Co., TN (Saulsbury or Grand Junction, TN) (I'm told the Scott Cemetery is on a private farm now, circa 2004 C.E.). William Scott [brother of the James Scott who m. Violet Bettie Roddy] married Nancy Edwards Wellborn and one of their children was Tennessee Alice Edwards Scott, b. Hardeman Co, TN, 1850-1879 (the 1st Mrs. John Edwin McCorkle of Dyer Co, TN, the 2nd Mrs. John Edwin McCorkle being Mary Elizabeth Cotton).

Generation V: Children of James Scott (b. 1808 or 1809 in S.C.) and Violet B. [Bettie?] Roddy, whom James Scott married in 1832:

Generation V (1): Martha Scott married Anderson Jehiel McCorkle, brother of the diarist John Edwin McCorkle. His only son, John Thomas McCorkle, 1855-1899, who m. Della Smith, died without issue at the Newbern RR crossing by Poplar Grove C.P. Cemetery because he didn't hear a train approach. (I think Uncle Anderson J. McCorkle fought for the Confederacy at the Battle of Shiloh and was rendered deaf.. His niece Annie G. McCorkle, b. circa 1917, says his ear trumpet used to scare her and her sister, Sue Alice McCorkle Lee, as children.) A.J. McCorkle and wife Martha Scott raised her niece, Margaret Viola McCorkle (Mills), 1862-1943, who married in 1890 Thomas H. Mills, 1849-1908. Margaret Viola McCorkle Mills was a daughter of David Purviance McCorkle (19 May 1830-7 May 1884) & his 1st wife Margaret L. Scott. Another child of David Purviance McCorkle of Obion Co., TN, and his 1st wife Margaret L. Scott was J. William McCorkle, 1858-1938, who married Miss Willie Jackson. To the union of David Purviance McCorkle and 1st wife Margaret L. Scott was also born a 1st child who lived only months, Violet Jane McCorkle, possibly a twin of J. William McCorkle, also born in 1858.

Generation V (2): Sarah Elizabeth Scott a.k.a. Mrs. Julius M. Huie, 1839-1893, d. Dyer-Gibson Co., TN, buried McCorkle Cemetery. Sarah E. Scott was Julius Huie's 2nd wife, his 1st wife being a McKnight who died in childbirth and who is buried in Cool Springs C.P. Cemetery, Gibson Co, TN.

Generation V (3): James Allen (Jimps) Scott who, I think, was a twin to Sarah Eliz. Scott Huie. James Scott m. a J. Miller [Jennie Miller or Jenette Miller, I can't remember which] from Churchton, Dyer Co, TN, and moved to either Bastrop or Cleburne, Texas, circa 1885-1890. I think Jimps Scott, by then of Texas, had a son named Howard or Bruce Scott who visited my grandfather Howard Anderson Huie in West Tennessee circa 1900, but I may have mis-remembered the name Howard or Bruce Scott.

Generation V (4): Clementine Scott (Mrs. James Trimble), lived Gibson Co, TN. Some descendants include James Spence Trimble (father of Patricia Trimble Miller and Bobby Trimble, who married Renita Fletcher of Yorkville, TN) and Mentia Trimble Hicks (d. March 2004, mother of Claudia Hicks Miller and Larry Charles Hicks); and some Hundleys of Yorkville (Janie Hundley Hall, mother of LaNita Hall VanDyke and a son Douglas Hall;) (other sisters of Janie Hall); Betty Hundley of Houston, TX, unmarried dau. of Bryan "Boss" Hundley (of Yorkville, TN) & wife Margaret Hundley, originally from Knoxville, TN.

Generation V (5): Allen (Tobe) Scott, 1844-1897; buried Dyer Co., TN (male; m. Sallie Oliver, 1880-1937).

Generation V (6): Thomas Elihue Scott (a Church of Christ preacher), buried McCorkle Cemetery; married Artie Hall, a daughter of Jonathan and Loumira Hall, who are interred there also. Thomas Elihue Scott's children included Lillian Scott King (Newbern, TN, no issue) and Horace Scott m. Jessie Midyett, parents of 3 children: Annie Maude Scott Brown (no issue), Janie Sue Scott Tilghman of Yorkville, TN (2 children: Terry Tilghman & Doris Ann Tilghman), and Rev. Thomas Scott of Henderson, TN (several children).

Generation V (7): Margaret L. Scott (Mrs. David Purviance McCorkle). David Purviance McCorkle, who moved to Obion Co, TN, was a brother to the diarist John E. McCorkle. He served in the Tennessee legislature as did John E. McCorkle. Three children were born to Margaret L. Scott and David Purviance McCorkle (1830-1884), who married 15 Dec. 1857: (1) Violet Jane McCorkle, b. and d. 1858; (2) J. William McCorkle, 1858-1938, m. Miss Willie Jackson, 1877-1924; and (3) Margaret Viola McCorkle, 1862-1943, married 1890 to Thomas H. Mills, 1849-1908, raised by her aunt Martha E. Scott McCorkle, Mrs. Anderson Jehiel McCorkle (a daughter of James and Violet B. Roddy Scott).

GENERATION V: The five children of William Scott, b. SC 1813, d. Hardeman Co., TN (Saulsbury or Grand Junction, TN), and wife Nancy Edwards Wellborn Scott, whom Wm. Scott married in NC on 28 Feb. 1843:

Generation V (1): Sallie Ann Scott (Dec. 10, 1843) m. W. Andrew Jackson. Generation V (2): James Scott, b. 14 Nov. 1845 - d. 18 May 1864, buried Scott Cemetery, Grand Junction, Saulsbury, TN, in Hardeman County.

Generation V (3): Cattie Lavinia Scott (Nov. 6, 1848 - d. 10 Oct. 1874) m. John Bowden.

Generation V (4): Tennessee Alice Edwards Scott m. (as 1st wife) John Edwin McCorkle, the diarist. Tennie was born in then-Henderson County, TN [Hardeman Co. now?] on 31 Oct. 1850 and died 27 May 1879. Her children by John E. McCorkle: Ora Alice McCorkle (Mrs. Julius Adolphus Huie); Will E. McCorkle (m. Una Pace); Glenn Roache McCorkle (m. (1st) Anne Heath of Milan, Gibson Co., TN, a Presbyterian; and (2nd) Irma King (no issue); Katie Pearl McCorkle who married Ed Lee Fox rather late in life (no issue). John E. McCorkle's children by his 2nd wife Mary Elizabeth Cotton who survived past adolescence were Sophie King McCorkle (Mrs. Howard Anderson Huie, mother of 3 children: Sarah Elisabeth Huie, 1904-1993 ; Howard Ewing Huie, 1904-1971, and "Baby" Ralph Huie who died in infancy); Errett Cotton McCorkle (no issue, 1888-1976); and Ewing McCorkle, who died at age 17 in 1900.
