This is a letter Ed G. Gilman wrote to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius P. Gilman less that a year before he passed away at age 26 years old from consumption. He had traveled to Arizona, I'm guessing for his illness.
Phoenix, Ariz Dear Father and Mother, I just arrived in Phoenix this morning and am getting along all OK. This is a real pretty place, everything is in full bloom and it looks like they never have any winter. I had radishes and onions for dinner. I had a real pleasant trip out here. It was near as tiresome as I had imagined. We stopped at San Antonio Monday evening for about 2 1/2 hours, had quite a nice time. We were in El Paso yesterday, remaining about 45 minutes. We passed real near the boarder of Old Mexico, Monday and and Tuesday, saw the famouse Rio-Grande River. I was very much disappointed in the river. I had expected to see a large river, but it is no larger than Forked Deer. We crossed the Pecos Valley Bridge Monday evening. It is said to be the highest bridge in the US and 2nd highest in the world. It is 321 feet high. It almost makes tou drunk to look straight down. Well how is all the people getting along? Has sister and Willie ever got to go to town yet? I guess you went to hear Bob Taylor speak. Did they get the 1000 white horses? How are you getting along with the young mule? Has Robert got so he can work him to the buggy yet? Tell sister I know I'll miss having someone fix my medicine. Well it is getting late. I must close. Give my love to all.
