Family Information for Jessie George (J. G.) DUNIVANT
Created by: on 22 FEB 2003.
Most recent update: 5 APR 2003
Abstract: My interest in this family started with a connection to the surname Thornburgh, which is a part of the Sammons branch of my family tree. For me, a significant part of the joy of genealogy research is trying to identify all the relationships in a family. Since there was significant data available on DUNIVANT, I decided to investigate this family further. I hope the results are worth publishing and will be helpful to other researchers interested in this surname. Many thanks to Natalie Huntley and other volunteers who have contributed information to the Dyer County TNGenWeb pages. Without their previous efforts, my compilation would not be possible.
James Woodley took photos of many grave markers for members of this family. Those photos are now hyperlinked to this document.
The document is divided into three sections:

son of William E. BRYANT (1864-1958) and Dora ARNETT BRYANT (1860-1938), who are both buried in the "old section" of Fairview Cemetery in Newbern.] The most likely possibility is that James A. - In 1900 Marion and Ben Anna WYNNE KEITH and children are living in Paducah, McCracken County, KY.
- In 1910 and 1920, living with her father and mother in Newbern, Dyer County, TN. The penmanship of the census enumerator in 1920 makes the names very hard to read. Her profession is listed as a Millinery Merchant.
- In 1930, Ben Anna WYNNE KEITH is living with Edna DUNIVANT in Newbern, Dyer County, TN. The women are most likely cousins, but there exact relationship is unknown. Ben Anna KEITH is listed as a widow, age 51. She was first married at age 18 (ca. 1893). Her profession is listed as a Milliner. After Mary's
death, John G. WYNNE was remarried twice. His second wife may have been Emma J. (maiden name unknown) WYNNE whose life dates are 1855-1895.[19b] His third wife was Ora Mae NUNN, who was born AUG 1873
or 1874 in TN. They were married on 18 OCT 1895. [20] He is the son of Benjamin

- Buried at Church Grove Cemetery in Newbern, TN. Grave Marker for William J. DUNIVANT
- Miscellaneous note: According to the grave marker transcriptions for Church Grove
Cemetery, there is a stone that says Tabitha DUNIVENT. [51] This might be a marker for a
child of William J. DUNIVANT and Rosa T. JUSTIS DUNIVANT, but it is more likely that it is a
marker for Rosa (using her middle name) since the 1900 census identifies that 3 of 3
children are still living. This Tabitha DUNIVANT might also be a daughter of one of the DUNIVANT sons of J.G. and D.A.B. DUNIVANT.
- John B[ascomb?] DUNIVANT
- Born ca. 1860 (after 4 AUG of that year) in TN, most likely in Newbern, Dyer County. [52]
- He is listed as a beneficiary in his father's will, but nothing more is known about him.
- In the 1900 and 1910 census records, there is a John B. DUNNIVANT/DUNNAVANT, born in
TN and approximately the same age, listed as an "inmate" in the Western [Tennessee]
State Hospital for the Insane in Bolivar, Hardeman County, TN. In the 1900 census his
parents are listed as born in NC; the parents' birth location is "unknown" in the 1920
census. A review of the1880 census CDs available from the Church of Latter Day Saints
reveals only one other possible John DUNIVANT (or DUNAVANT, DUNEVANT, DUNNAVANT,
DUNNEVANT, DUNNIVANT) born near the same time. This second John DUNAVANT turns out to
be John Vernon DUNAVANT, who is living in Ripley, Lauderdale County, TN, in 1920. So
at this point, it is purely conjecture that the patient at the hospital is this
specific John B. DUNIVANT, son of J.G. and D.A.B. DUNIVANT.
- Felix Augustus DUNIVANT
- Born 1863 in TN, most likely in Newbern, Dyer County. [53]
- Married Nelle Kathleen ENGLAND on 17 AUG 1901 in Decatur County, TN. [54] She is the

Decatur County, TN. A short biography of Nell ENGLAND DUNIVANT can be found on page 61
of the book Prominent Tennesseans by James L. Gillum, Who's Who Publishing Co.,
Lewisburg, TN, 1940. Besides giving her specific birth date and location (Decatur County),
it also mentions that she served as the Decatur County Chancery Court Clerk for more
than 14 years. It does list her husband incorrectly as J. A. DUNIVANT.
- Two children:
- George England DUNIVANT (Born 9 DEC 1902 and died 11 DEC 1903). [57]
- Mary Stout DUNIVANT (Born 26 JUN 1905 and died 3 DEC 1980.) Married Raymond

County,TN. [59]
- Died in 1923, most likely in Decaturville, TN.
- Has mistakenly been identified as a son of William Arch DUNIVANT by some DUNIVANT
researchers, probably due to the fact that both men lived and died in Decaturville, TN.
- Buried at Decaturville City Cemetery, Decaturville, Decatur County, TN
- Cora L. DUNIVANT
- Born SEP 1864 in TN, most likely in Newbern, Dyer County. [60]
- Married first to Beauregard TOWNSEND on 29 DEC 1885 in Dyer County, TN. [61]
He is the son of Robert W. TOWNSEND and Martha REYNOLDS. [62] He is most likely
the Beauregard TOWNSEND listed as having died at age 30 years and buried in the
"old section" of Fairview Cemetery in Newbern, TN. [63] Grave Marker for Beauregard TOWNSEND
Based on the age of the
youngest child, Birdie, in the 1900 census, he died no earlier than MAY 1891 and before

[1] Jessie George DUNIVANT was born in Virginia. In the 1850 census records for Civil District 4 of Dyer County, TN, there are two DUNIVANT families. The head of household of the second family is J. DUNIVANT, a carpenter born in VA. J. DUNIVANT may be a younger brother of J.G. DUNIVANT. In the household of J. DUNIVANT, there is an Elizabeth DUNIVANT, age 65, born in VA. A review of the 1840 census for Virginia shows only one DUNIVANT (using Soundex coding) family living in Nottoway County, VA and near the household of Allen CRENSHAW. That is the household of Boling DUNIVANT. Ages of the members of the household match the ages of J.G. DUNIVANT, his probable brother J. DUNIVANT, and probable mother Elizabeth DUNIVANT.
[1a] Damaris' name is listed as D.A.B. CRENSHAW on the death certificate for her oldest daughter, Anne A. DUNIVANT WYNNE. Further research revealed the Chancery Court Notice on her father's estate, which further helped discover other resources that listed her full name instead of her initials. Marriage date for Jessie George DUNIVANT and his wife estimated based on
birth date of their oldest child.
