Know all men by these presents that W. B. Tipton of the County of Dyer & State of 
Tennessee of the first part & J. W. Tartington of the County of Dyer & State of 
Tennessee of the second part Witnesseth that the said W. B. Tipton for and in 
consideration one thousand Dollars cash in hand the receipt whereof is hereby 
acknowledged hath given, granted, bargained, sold and conveyed and by these presents 
doth give Grant, bargain, sell and convey unto the said J. W. Tartington, his heirs and 
assigns all that piece or parcel of land lying & being in the County of Dyer & State of 
Tennessee and in the 4th Civil District of Dyer County , state aforesaid in the 13th 
surveyors District 8th Range and 3 Section part of Grant no 238 to J. W. Tartington for 50 
Acres.  Beginning on a Poplar G. H. Todds North West corner, thence South with his line 
106 poles to a maple in the boundary of Henderson Clarks entry thence West Sixty Eight 
poles & sex feet to a stake & pointers, thence South 37 poles to a red oak & pointers, 
thence East 48 poles to the beginning.  Containing by estimation 50 acres more or less to 
have and to hold the same to him said Tartington, his heirs & assigns forever. I, the said 
W. B. Tipton bind myself my heirs, assigns and executors to warrant and defend the title 
of said land to the said Tartington his heirs and assigns the lawful claims of all persons 
whatsoever. In Testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in presence of 
these of these Witnesses this 24th day of November 1866.

Personally appeared before me T. H. Benton Clerk  of the county court of said county W. 
B. Tipton the bargainor above named with whom I am personally acquainted and 
acknowledged the execution of the foregoing Deed for the uses & purposes therein 
contained. Witness my hand at office this 24th day of Nov 1866.

This deed was found in Dyer County Deed Book N, Page 451.  It is transcribed as written 
with some grammatical errors.  The name Tarkington is misspelled each time it is written.
