Dyer County Court Clerk Minutes

Dated May 1, 1848


Be it Remembered that a county court was begun and held for the County of Dyer State of Tennessee at the Court House in the Town of Dyersburg on the first Monday in May it being the first day of said month in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred & forty Eight & in the 72 year of American Independence.

Present and holding said Court the Worshipfull THOMAS J. CONNELL Esquire Chairman of said court SAMUEL McDAVID, A. B. STALCUP, THOMAS NASH, WILLIAM FETHERSTON, S. H. SNOW & JOHN F. SINCLAIR Esquires Justices of said court Z. B. PHILLIPS Sheriff of said County & JAMES H. DOYLE Clark of said court when the following proceedings was had Towit.

This day THOMAS NASH who has been duly & constitutionally Elected & commissioned a Justice of the peace of this Court came into open court here & taken the several oaths prescribed by Law as a Justice & Taken his seat on the Bench.

This day JOHN RADFORD obtaines Leave to Record his stock mark which is a Swollow fork in Each Ear & under bit in the Left ear.

THOMAS GUALTNEY obtaines Leave to Record his stock mark Towit under bit in the Right & upper bit in the Left Ear.

This day A. G. FERGUSON Executor of H. BREWER Deceased made return of an Inventory of said Estate which was received by the court & ordered of Record.

This day an account in favor of ELIZABETH SMITH against the minor Heirs of BENJAMIN SMITH Deceased for Board Clothing &c of one Hundred & forty four Dollars was produced in open court Received by the court & ordered to be paid by the Administrator of said Estate.

The commissioners heretofore appointed by this court to Lay off a years provision for the widow of H. BREWER Deceased made their Report which was Received by the court & ordered of Record.

On a Motion and It appearing to the satisfaction of the court here that WILLIAM R. WOMMACK has departed this life intestate. It is therefore ordered by the court that ISAAC SAWYER be appointed Administrator of all and singular the goods & chattles Rights & credits of said deceased whereupon came said SAWYER into open court here together with THOMAS H. FOWLKES his security & entered in the acknowledged Bond...

This day ISAAC SAWYER Administrator of B. SMITH Estate Returned an Inventory & an account of sale of said Estate...

This day JOLLEY OLDS who has been duly & constitutionally Elected constable of the 3rd civil district in this county came into open court here together with LEWIS TURNAGE & JOHN M. PARKER his securities...

Ordered by the court that the new Road Lately opened on the Yorkville Road near E. P. LIGHTs be Established and kept open at the public road...

This day settlement made by LEWIS TURNAGE Guardian of minor children with JAS H. DOYLE Clerk of this court was produced in open court & in all things confirmed by the court & ordered of Record.

Ordered by the court that Col. GEORGE B. PATE, THOMAS MILLER, GEO. MILLER, JNO. W. HASSELL, WILLIAM BOWEN, THOMAS J. CONNELL & SAMUEL McDAVID be & they are hereby appointed commissioners to set out & superintend the building of a bridge across Pond Creek & that they report to the next quarterly term of this court.

Ordered by the court that WILLIS REDDICK be & he is hereby appointed overseer of that part of the Jackson Road commencing at the House of H. N. JACKSON... in the place of WM. RAULES Resigned...
